I saw Novak Djokovic for the first time in 2005 at Wimbledon"

'I saw Novak Djokovic for the first time in 2005, exactly at Wimbledon', Toni wrote. 'While I was walking over the training session area, Aorangi Park, to join Rafael, that was waiting for me in the locker room, I stopped watching the match that Juan Monaco was playing on No. 18 Court. I observed the match for minutes and I asked who was the Argentinean's opponent. When I headed into the locker room I told my nephew that we had a problem, since I had seen a very good tennis player. A player like this, like the ones who mark the history of any sport, warn early because they have something more.

I've seen this quote before but I don't know why this scene popped into my mind today...

Toni was scouting the grounds early for any potential roadblocks to Rafa's quest. :D

Their RG 2007 match was the first time I was really sure we were seeing a great player on the rise, rather than a good one like say Roddick or Nalby. While he already played well at IW and Miami, at the time I wasn’t really surprised to see Nadal pushed on HC. I think the RG match ended up being straights, but Djokovic showed off his fearlessness, huge BH, aggressive groundstrokes, taking the ball on the rise, great agility around the court. He showed a lot of what would become such a big matchup problem for Nadal over time.

His English is worse than Nadal’s.

Sounds like a bunch of BS. He probably noted a bunch of other players and said they were dangerous but forgot about all of those, and now only remembers the one who went on to be an all time great.

adidas had both Djokovic and Murray in its stable before 2011. They had a choice to make, and they picked Murray. If they had Uncle Toni on the payroll, they would've made the right choice.

Djokovic wore adidas until his breakout year in 2011. He's the rare superstar who's a sportswear nomad, he moved from adidas to Tacchini to Uniqlo to Lacoste.

adidas has Thiem, Tsisipas and Zverev in its stable right now. If it has to choose only one, which one should it be? That's a tough one, between Thiem and Tsisipas! You can make a case for either!

Uncle Toni gave RAFA a warning six years in advance but RAFA didn't listen.
Toni knows he was way hotter than Rafa back in the day. That sustains him in these tough times. Seriously-- who would you rather look like here? Take away the money, the fame and the slams. The only attribute Rafa has over Toni here is youth.

He wore Tacchini at the 2010 australia open. I think it was the Adidas shoes that he kept longer.

A sign of things to come. Two of the greatest of all time starting off their historic rivalry.

Forgot how hard Djokovic used to bludgeon the ball.. He's not a pusher now by any means but his groundstrokes from both wings were hammers when he first got on tour.

Nadal's forehand back then also..... Absolute laser.

Their first two matches were already full of great rallies
