The thread 2023 Sinner vs 2006 Federer at the WTF inspired this thread. I was amazed to see Sinner get as many votes as he did for a couple of reasons. 1. He hadn't even won the event yet while 2006 Federer was in the middle of winning 4 straight fast hard court WTF titles(2005 was played on carpet). 2. It's fast hardcourts, which is arguably Fed's best surface. But to be completely fair, tennis is constantly evolving, kind of like how most junior high schoolers nowadays could knock out peak Mike Tyson in the first round. Or how most of the centers on girls' high school teams would hold peak Wilt Chamberlain to 0 rebounds a game.
Now, let's look at Wimbledon. I chose 2005 as Fed's best Wimbledon run. He only dropped one set, a tiebreaker in the 3rd round. From there, he destroyed his next 4 opponents(3 were previous slam winners). In all, he held serve in 93.7% of his service games, yet still managed to win 40.2% of his return points. That breaks down to only dropping 7 games on his serve while breaking his opponents' serve 31 times. 2005 was arguably Fed's best Wimbledon.
However, in 2022, Sinner pushed Djokovic to 5 sets in the Wimbledon QF. ATG players named Van Rijhoven, Kyrgios, Norrie, and Kwon only managed to go 4 sets against Djokovic that year. Sinner was easily the 2nd best player in that tourney by winning TWICE as many sets against Djoker than the legends above. I think that this is solid evidence that Sinner has already peaked higher on grass than Federer ever did. And if we toss in evolution, it's a closed case. It's likely a straight-set win for Sinner with a couple of bread sticks thrown in.
What do you guys think?
