I Stand By Roger: Flight of the Golden Eagle of Victory

fedr was fed the proper antacids and made it through the not so red hot Cilic peppers. Now it is time for Stage 3 of the Flight of the Golden Eagle vs Dominik “don’t call me Thiem or Stricker” Koepfer.

Sexi Rogi will be reminded of this opponent from five years ago, no?:

Can't wait for the next Sexi Rogi Masterclass!

These clay matches I feel are good for him. The one against Cilic was almost like innoculation. Better to build antibodies to that nasty bug on clay than face him directly on grass.

Anyone else feel Roger might strategically tank this next one against the German leftie?

He'll probably make it go the distance to get the maximum out of it, but he's got what he wanted out of this tournie and can't wait to get back to his kids and prep for Halle, where his family will be able to join him (?)

Nope. He would never tank. He is The Eagle.

Anduh Murrah, aka The Muzziah, offered a significant compliment to Saturday’s performance by the Golden Eagle on the Twitter:

“Im (sic) not bothered by the outcome of this match at all. Just seeing Federer (sic) at 39 off the back of two knee surgeries playing to an empty stadium at 12:30am getting fired up is inspirational to me. Do what you ❤

Stage 4 will be tough. Matteo is playing bullyball with that serve and one, his touch is underrated, and he has a lot of confidence coming in with the third best clay season behind only The Nadal and Citypass.

Play hard, play to win but stay in one piece with both wings intact and talons sharpened for Halle and beyond, Old Buddy!

Roger Federer has withdrawn from his fourth-round match at the French Open against Matteo Berrettini in order to begin preparing for the upcoming grass court season where he will be playing in Halle and at Wimbledon.

I stand by SexiRogi as he returns to SW19 to soar above the gray skies of London and readies himself for his attempt to bring home victory a ninth time.

Great omen yesterday as Switzerland humbled heavily favored France at Eurocup’20. Today heavily favored Swiss Maestro will look to make it 2-0 over the French and Mannarino.

Through four stages the Golden Eagle now soars after an almost costly stumble on takeoff.

Wr await the decisive portion of the rain delayed R16 match between The Russian Meddle and The Polish Incredible Hurk. Meddle leads 2-1 and on serve in the fourth.

Rejoice in the wondrous flight of The Eagle! Allez BOTE, allez SexiRogi!

Victory no. 105 (!) for Roger Federer earlier today in the men's singles event at Wimbledon. With that win he has reached at least the quarter-final at the world's oldest tennis tournament in eighteen of his last nineteen attempts. A stupendous achievement!

There once was a Herr who had a big curl
Right in the middle of his forehead
When he is good he’s very very good
When he was bad (2R vs Staks 2013)
He was horrid.

Closest calls: Falla 1R in 2010, Benneteau 3R in 2012. Nobody else took him to 5 sets before reaching the Elite Eight.

Eagle-Hearted Friends, I’m missing this fortnight that ephemeral tennis magic and shotmaking joie de vivre only the Maestro can summon. I know you are, too. It's been a tough year, within tennis and without, and this tournament had the promise of a tennis vaccine, but has transformed into a cocktail of bleach and horse dewormer.

Selfishly, I'm missing, too, Thiem’s sweaty, grunting form on court and Borna’s moaning, shirtless massages on the sidelines. I am missing Venus and her stoic facade that masks a deep passion for tennis. I'm even missing Rafa and his myriad, bizarre rituals, that possibility of an embarrassing beatdown. I yearn for a time when I wasn’t forced to root for Zverev — the lesser of two super-spreaders this COVID season. But it's emblematic of a year marked by pandemic, climate disasters, conspiracy-fueled insurrections and knee surgeries.

In the meantime, I'm quite enjoying the cultists distracting themselves from a certain achievement — looming like a cloud of misery and disease —by being outraged by a compliment given to their mechanical messiah. Their lack of humor and common sense is perfectly symbolic. Inspired, I thought I’d share a new ditty with my BOTE family….

Then He Takes Your Soul

That first set was all roses, the match a rotting bouquet.
But that’s Novak. He takes your soul, I heard Andy say.
His followers clutched their vials of healing water in contemptuous display.
As if they didn’t know a Faustian bargain allowed him to play this way.

Yes, facing off against Novak Djokovic can take its toll,
When you feel like the shots are all out of your control,
Then a robot is offering the crowd the heart from the human flesh it stole.
As Mr. Roddick said: First he takes your legs, then he takes your soul.

And what of Rafa Nadal — a bullish beast in his prime?
No court is immune, none so esteemed he dare not begrime.
Some laugh off his butt-picking antics like they’re simply a victimless crime.
But he takes that most precious thing of all: your irreplaceable time.

And the sorely missed defending champ can’t be left off this list.
Thiem is suffering from injuries. He also made me hurt my wrist.
When he plays from behind, he turns every match into a sordid, sweaty tryst.
First he imprisons your eyes, then he takes your breath away. Don’t resist!

How about old Andy Murray? He’s past his best, it’s true.
But he has a second act: a social media troll to rule the loo.
He’s keeping track of Stefanos’ bowels — a dirty job that someone has to do.
Watch out, Nick: He’ll take your title and your precious followers, too.

Finally there’s the Maestro, and I’m sure you’ll be agreeing:
At his best, a rival’s only option is tossing the racket and fleeing.
Or watch the master at work — this match is solely an afternoon of sightseeing.
First he takes your self-esteem, then he consumes your entire being.

In the end, have some sympathy, like the Stones said in their rock-'n'-roll.
And understand the desperate, empty neediness that plays a role.
Gather ’round the dead souls of this spirit-eroded court, so that we might console
Both vanquished foe and the champion, entombed in his corporeal black hole.

That's why he takes your legs, then he takes your soul.

It's hilarious how all of the ESPN commentators reacted to a certain player's opponents being vastly favored by the crowd and the hostile reaction he received. They couldn't understand why people weren't rooting him on for history. In fact, they were rooting for the opposite. Fred Willard's dog-show announcer in "Best in Show" looks great after listening to this crew babble on about how "everyone wants Novak to win the Grand Slam." Chris Evert, have you ever visited a tennis fan forum?

They couldn't fathom what the New York crowd knew all too well — that being the best ever to hit a tennis ball (as measured by big titles at least) does not make one cease to be a pile of human garbage. People have been objectively great at their job while every day providing ample evidence that their potential immolation wouldn't be worth one's urination.

This whole year has helped me rethink the value of the GOAT debate, to stop caring so much. Let him have it. He will never have the respect and devotion he craves so much, so there's some malevolent joy to be found there. Let him sit in bitter silence in that packed trophy room. Each new addition just makes people like him less, I think (and every week he loses more fans to COVID death as an anti-science role model) — so, counterintuitively, this is the time of decline for Joe Kovic. Poetic justice indeed!

My respect for the Swiss maestro has increased manifold after this saga. We took it for granted, but now it seems quite impressive how he managed to stay so grounded and dignified in spite of all the wealth, fame and success in the world, which doesn't seem to be the case with entitled & arrogant scoundrels like Djo-COVID and Zedzilla.

Accomplishments like number of slams or weeks at # 1 or GOAT or whatever imaginary designation these people like to obsess about all of a sudden seem so unimportant and being just a decent person takes precedence.

We were so blessed to have him all these years and I still hope to see him back. Allez!

Here’s a guy who will look real beak tomorrow. His name is Rafael Gittesdal and he stuck his beak where he shouldn’t have last night but he likes to breathe through that beak:

Welp, he clearly didn't catch a lucky break -- he might not know as much as he thinks he nose.

Maybe he did too much Roman around!
