I think I am Ambidextrous!

Well I've been playing tennis for almost 9 years now and I am a lefty. When I was a child I was 100% left handed and my parents tried to stop this natural leftism by forcing me to use my right hand. Well they sort of succeeded. I can use both hands for most activities. I can and do eat with both hands, play sports with the left hand mostly and I write with my right hand. My right hand is considerably weaker than my left and I am working it out to see if I can bridge the gap in strength. Now how does this relate to tennis you ask. Well although I have a very good lefty forehand and serve and all other aspects of tennis. I do not posses a decent back hand. I've tried for years for a decent lefty 1 or 2 handed backhand and was never able to master it. But for some reason the right handed backhand and stance are very clear in my mind and I can visualize them and feel more natural when I do them. Well the other day I went to hit on the wall with my right hand as I'd heard from a teaching pro's video that on a 2 handed backhand the non dominant hand does 90% of the work and after a few minutes of hitting righty forehands I became shocked. I was surprised that the right handed forehand came natural to me almost too natural it scared me. Aside from my right hand being a little weak. I was consistently spanking right handed forehands at the wall. What was even more scary was how aggressively I was hitting the ball. when I play as a left hander I tend to play a relaxed game even on my forehands. What amazed me was I was hitting right handed half volleys at the wall after like 20 mins of practice and I had correct instinct and anticipation of where the next ball would land. Should I continue this and go 2 forehanded? Should I do a Sharapova (She's naturally left handed) and plays right handed completely? How come it came so natural to me? Could it be that my mind knows all the shots from my left side and is flipping them to the other hand? I am really confused now because I think I should have maybe started out as a right hander. I've never been coached, taught myself how to play. I was the #2 player on my HS team 5 years ago. This backhand problem was what was holding my game hostage at the 4.0 level. I've played other sports including soccer and I never invested this much time (not even 5% of the time I spent on tennis) and resources into them as I did for tennis had I done so who knows where I'd be now.

I can do everything lefty that I do righty except for serve and hit a one handed backhand, but I do possess a mean 2 handed lefty backhand. From 1 ambidextrous player to another, stick to your natural hand. Sure it's a nice little circus act to use either hand, but when it comes down to it, you need to master your natural hand (no jokes please). I'm a natural righty and I can't hit a lefty backhand to save my life so why don't you try what I did? Use a 2hbh when you play lefty and let your right hand do most of the work. I can't believe I'm telling you to try a 2 hander.

If you were ambidextrous, you'd know it.

And Rickson, no one BECOMES ambidextrous. You're simply skilled with your off hand.

Is anyone truly ambidextrous? I started using my left hand in basketball to have an extra option for layups. The off hand is definitely not as useful for tennis as in basketball, but I figure it's a nice option to have in case your strong arm gets injured.

I can play basketball with both hands too. The title "I think I am ambidextrous" was to bring you in and it worked LOL. I just wanted other peoples opinions.

My mind is confused when it comes to tennis. I think I may have forced myself into being a lefty. Now that I look at it the right handed game seems so natural to me. I can see angles and shots that I've never realized from my left side.

I can close my eyes and imagine myself playing right handed and I can visualize me hitting specific shots. Well I'll try to hit the wall tomorrow and see if there is an improvement. I did a few exercise for wrist strength we'll see if they help. How do you like the spacing?

She's Ambidextrous. I think a few weeks of daily hitting and my right hand will be as good as her left. Lets hope I have the patience.

My right hand feels like I am learning to play again after a long absence from tennis like 10 years or so. Seems as if I never forgot the motor skills. It's just weird that's the only way to describe it.

Aha! I should have known you were targeting me. Damn this curse of ambidexterity!

I used to suck hard at hitting lefty forehands, but now I can hit it better than a few of my club players I reckon! I can also volley pretty well, but backhand/serve forget it...

Yeah I've semi-parted with my love for tennis at the moment. I still hit up the boards every now and then but basically no on-court time for the last few weeks/months. I would love to get some videos up after a few hits of my lefty FH though!

99% of the basketball players use both hands to play. Only a few shoot jumpshots with both hands. Those are ambidextrous (Larry Bird, Penny Hardaway).

I shoot with both hands, without caring the distance, but I have a better % as a lefty, ergo, I cannot be considered ambidextrous. I'm a left handed who shoots good enough with both hands.

I play tennis right handed, and table tennis with both hands, and yet, I don't consider myself ambidextrous (most people do consider me an ambi, but in the end, I'm a lefty)

That really is confusing, but i guess if i tried doing everything with my left for a long time, and strengthened it out as well, i could hit a good left-handed forehand as well?

Hit my only lefty volley today to save a break point at 4-2 down. My partner and I came back to win the set 6-4.
