If Federer was as ripped as Nadal...

muscles dont mean being fit. roger's build fits his play and nadal's build fits his play. they would be totally different players if they were different people.

Ripped???

Those big muscles are part of Rafa's injury problems. Flexibility is more important in making a good tennis player, and big muscles hinder flexibility. Fed and Joker are almost the perfect body types for tennis.

for those of you that remembered michael chang....he was known for his speed around the court, basically the quickest guy on the tour.....until he pumped up iron....the added on muscle mass slowed him down. he game is built on speed, not power, and this was one of the turning points for him, if i remembered correctly, the other reason why his game went down hill was using an extended racket, gave him more power, more aces but less accuracy (this is for another thread, sorry).

so i think if fed gets pumped, it will hurt his game.

I dont think this would make a difference. Actually it may even hamper Federers quickness and speed around the court if he had the extra muscle weight.

If Federer and Nadal used each others rackets, who do you think would win? Nadal with the K90 or Federer with the Babolat AeroPro Drive Cortex? Would Federer still have as much success if he used Nadals racket?

I remember in 2005 when Hewitt came out with the muscle shirts and actually filled them out, he was playing great. Then he lost all of that muscle by the next year and his level dropped way down.

Federer is different - his strokes don't require huge arms. His form and flexibility allows him to swing the racquet like a whip. All he needs is a huge forearm, which he has.

I just can't sit here and let the crappy myth that if you do weights, you will get slow.
It's just rubbish. Tennis is a power/endurance sport.
That means you'll want to do higher reps.
I've found from personal experience that doing weights can actually help in flexibility.
Just have to stretch and do cardio before and after.
And a little tip, if you pump your weights FAST instead of slow like all the personal trainers tell u, you will get faster.
Found this out from personal experience.
Sure, Federer is very fit, but I think it's time he upped the ante on the off court training.

I totally agree. I work with personal trainers who all say the same thing: train for your sport. Don't lift like a bodybuilder for tennis. Lift and train for speed, endurance and flexibility. Look at guys like Tommy Robredo, Haas, Verdasco. They are all very fit, cut and muscular in a manner appropriate for a tennis player. just my opinion..

Federer would've won the French Open if he was the fittest player on tour. The fact is Federer relies a ton on his serve and Rafa doesn't. It would be scary if Rafa did have a big serve. The fittest player usually wins on slower surfaces. Nadal is the fittest player.

The statement that "big muscles hinder flexibility" is just not true. There are plenty of heavily muscled people who are very flexible. Look at the fine (smell the sarcasm) actor Jean Claude Van Damme. Quite muscular and can go more than 180 degrees in splits.

That being said, I doubt being heavily muscled would help Fed.

Generalizing your own experience to that of someone else is a mistake.

What works for you may or may not work for others.

The above examples are sound, Chang stated in a Tennis Mag. article that bulking up slowed him down.

That's like saying Nadal reiles a ton on his speed and Federer doesn't. Federer has great anticipation. The player with the best anticipation usually wins on quicker surfaces. And by the way, no one here said that Federer was the most fit player, just one of the most fit.

My main point is that each player is who they are: you can't say Nadal would dominate if he had a great serve because then he most likely would have based his game on that and not what it is now. You can't say that Roddick would be screwed without his serve because he would have a completely different game than what he has now.

Nadal's got great anticipation as well. It's just he doesn't get enough free points on his serve. A lot of times his serve gets punished. It happens the most on hardcourts.

Why not just say: "If Federer was as rippped as Nadal, and played like Nadal, and looked like Nadal..."

Oh wait! then he'd be Nadal!

Federer's game is perfectly fine the way it is right now.

We should start a post count of how times you have repeated this over and over and over and over and over again. Are you suffering from relapses, lol?

anytime one of these stupid threads comes up, or someone posts something stupid ( in other words, something I don't agree with), I'm going to post this.

Well then I could say, Nadal should switch to a smaller headsize. His deep balls that sail past the baseline will end up becoming baseline balls, and his serves will gain a few MPH. But what's the point? I have a feeling you're just stuck in the same mindset from many threads ago. Move on already. :p

Nah, it's more fun this way. A constant thorn in the side of everyone who kept saying fed needs a larger frame.

I always find it interesting reading these threads that turn into "Fed needs a bigger racquet". The guy has dominated the number 1 spot for the last few years using a 90, maybe all the other guys should switch to what he is using? He is a player who suffers very few injuries and moves very smoothly which allows him to be able to use a heavier midsized frame. Just because just Joe Blow at the club can't win with it has nothing to do with Federer.

Careful Drakulie, I smell a punitive damages lawsuit coming at you for this action...lol
I can just see the courtroom full of boys in Capri pants pulling on their wedgie out talking about how you hurt their feelings on TTW.

Any defense lawyer you would recommend? BreakPoint perhaps??

Bulky muscles slows down racquet accelleration so Fed would not be able to generate the power he needs on his forehand.

come on now...i'd like to see some scientific proof of that! ever witnessed Rafa's racket acceleration?!?!?!?!?

It's brutal!

Darn right, Fed reminds me a bit of Guga in that respect. Guga had AMAZING flexibility and was as skinny as a twig. But boy, could he smash his forehand AND backhand.

Of course, they have completely different games, but the flexibility aspect in relation to their musculature is similar.

Fed would be better if he switched to a larger frame.

exactly what i was going to say....if federer was as ripped as nadal...he would only be better if he played with an equal or greater frame size than nadal currently uses...

i'm serious about this..........................;)
