In Andy Murray's honor

What would you say are the best matches he has ever played?

My nominations are:

  1. Shanghai 2010 final against Fed. Fed had no answer to Murray that day. Murray was incredibly aggressive.
  2. Toronto 2010 final against Fed. Another aggressive Murray match.
  3. Tokyo 2011 final vs Nadal. Murray GOATed in the last 2 sets.
  4. RG 2016 SF vs Wawrinka. A very good match by Murray who took Stan out of his GOATing zone.
What are your nominations? Let's reminisce Andy when he was having glorious days.

2011 Tokyo vs Nadal
2008 US Open vs. Nadal
2015 Madrid vs. Nadal

His CC BH was as good as any ever in these three matches. It was a real thing of beauty in general but these matches it was something else.

2010 and 2012 Shanghai matches vs. Fed
2009 Doha vs. Fed

2011 Cincy vs. Djokovic (don’t really think Djokovic was injured)
2009 Miami vs Djokovic
2016 Rome vs. Djokovic
2013 Wimbledon vs Djokovic

And any match in which he dismantled a monster serve.

2012 U.S.Open vs Raonic 2010 Cincy vs. Raonic, 2016 Wimby vs. Raonic.
2016 Vienna vs Isner, 2010 Australian Open vs. Isner

2016 Atp world tour finals against Djokovic...battling for his first YE #1 and he absolutely smashed Djokovic in his favourite court

There's a reason about 15 matches have been mentioned so far and that one wasn't.

No I get it - just don’t think Fed representing his country would let his level drop having never won Olympic gold. For Murray springboard for slam success. Retaining it in 2016 was remarkable.

To put it in a comparison our overseas members can understand

Its like beating a team in a friendly after they just beat you to win the World Cup

Not a good comparison - the Olympics are hardly a friendly. Pretty sure the athletes would disagree with you there.

Some great BH from Murray in this one. Served well and and took control. Sprayed some errors, but hit a lot of winners too.

Murray used to be so aggressive. It's sad that he resorted to 80% defensive play. A more aggressive approach could have prolonged his career by 2 extra years at least.

The 2016 Roland Garros semi with Stan is one of the only times I've ever seen Andy Murray play tennis and seen the magic the media in this country seems to think he produces on a regular basis (not saying he doesn't do it, just that I never see it) That was a beautiful dismantling of a performance.

His matches at the WTF in 2016 with Nishikori and Raonic were amazing too. That was the week he maybe wowed me more than any other.

Most of my other favourites of his tend to be losses 2010 Wimbledon vs. Nadal
2010 WTF vs. Nadal
2011 Rome vs. Djokovic
2012 Australia vs. Djokovic
2012 Wimbledon vs. Federer
2014 Rome vs. Nadal
2015 Wimbledon vs. Federer

He also played (more than one if I'm remembering right?) highly entertaining matches in Australia with Llodra, and another favourite is the first set of his match with Stepanek at Queens in 2014.

Wouldn’t call it a friendly. The Olympics aren’t important to me when comparing legacies, but I’m sure players are all dying to win a gold medal. No doubt Fed wanted to win that match really badly, but he was just gassed and came short.

Exactly - the 4 hour semi against Delpo demonstrates commitment to the tournament.

I hope to get a couple of Top Spin games in over the weekend. I will be using Andy Murray.

''My player pretty much has similar stats to Federer and my coach is the Swiss guy on gold level. I am at level 20, play on very hard and play full length games (i.e best of 5 set slams). For the most part I find "very hard" quite easy (I initially struggled but worked out that body positioning has a huge bearing creating winning shot angles). Beating all the top guys without giving away more than 2 or 3 games per set but Andy Murray does the reverse on me. I can be timing the ball well for a whole tournament but as soon as Murray starts his slice backhand and wicked angled shots cross court I struggle. If any one can give me advice it would be greatly appreciated.''

Let’s not. All this mawkishness is enough to make me wanna hurl. You open any British media outlet and it’s tributes flowing in for Andy. FFS he’s not dead. Thank you Andy you had a great career and good luck with the next part of your life. But life goes on.

He was a great tactician, phenomenal athlete, a player with tones of varieties in his game, especially in terms of how he varies his spins. I only learned to appreciate his game during the last several years of his career and wasn't quite impressed with his overall defensive mindset during his entire career (except for the rare moments where he employed more offensive game, i.e. vs Nadal at the USO).
He was a player of an incredible consistency, but he never had a big game, that's why he won only three grand slams, even though he reached numerous of finals.

Overall, he's had an amazing career and he'll definitely enjoy his retirement.

With a bit more luck like other players have had, Murray was good for more than 3 slams. He put himself in 11 finals and every time it was either Djokovic or Federer waiting for him except one time.

Either way guy has had an incredible career. He is so underrated.

...He is so underrated.

How so ?

He’s been either placed in the Big 4 (perhaps the junior member) or Big 3 + 1 for a good chuck of his career, with everyone else way behind (except for a brief period Stan). Which seems appropriately rated.

As far as where he rates in the Open Era time will tell but he sometimes got the better of The Big 3 at the Majors and will be rated accordingly.

2012 U.S.Open vs Raonic...

In the next round (QF) he was one game away from going down two sets to Cilic but he saved it, won the set in a breaker and Cilic only won two more games the last two sets, getting bagled in the fourth. :-D

I kind of think that maybe if he had just backed off a little in 2016 that he would still be healthy. No way of knowing that for sure though. He surely could've benefited from shortening points. Man that dude never gave up on a ball. It's what I admired about him the most even though it's probably what did him in.

He had such a long career and played at an extremely high level in so many matches that I think it's difficult to pick just one. His performances against Fedovic at the 2012 Olympics and against Nadal in the 2011 Tokyo final would certainly be right up there though.

Yeah, people say he will retire early, but the guy has played as long as Sampras did. Definitely a long career.

You seem obsessed with Nadal.

Did he add all the other matches after you quoted him?

If so I guess it could be a compliment to Nadal that he sees his best level of play being needed to defeat Nadal but not other players ;)

Seeing how people hate Andy and Rafa in here made me understand that I am not even a hater.
I’d never write those kind of things if Federer retire.
It’s more his fans in here that I don’t like.

:laughing: Yes, that’s why every post that denigrates Federer or hisnaccomplishments or props up Djokovic and/or Nadal (see all of Lew’sposts) seems to have a like from you.

2012 Olympics Semi-Final and Final were brilliant performances really. Probably his best level on grass.

US Open 2008 Final, Tokyo 2011 Final - absolutely unplayable in certain patches.

US Open 2016 vs Dimitrov, maybe R4? Not talked about as much since it wasn't against one of the other three big guys, but this was about as perfect as it gets from Murray throughout an entire BO5 match. Didn't have even a single let down
