The X offers nothing new - same apps. Same iOS.

It’s like saying you need a new computer every time Microsoft updates windows.

It’s rediculius.

I love my 6. It’s been so reliable that I’m baffled I don’t need a new phone yet like millions of other doofuses.

Unfortunately smart phones have become somewhat of a status symbol to some folks not unlike expensive sneakers to some people.

My upgrade rule is simple... Whatever the new device costs, it has to pay for itself within a year or less with returns on added productivity or cost avoidance.

A simple example - The kids got phones once the added benefit of real time communications resulted in cost savings. Living in a rural community with both parents working, we can avoid 50 miles or more driving and a couple of hours of wasted time per week with crisp communications.​

These days even simple, $200 phones are fast enough and good enough for things that really matter. The really high end end phones have good cameras but they're really tinker toys compared to a proper digital camera.... The iPhone X may be more convenient for snapshots but it doesn't come close to my ~4 year old Olympus Stylus 1.

I'm not knocking the people who buy an iPhone X, Pixel 2, Note 8... I'm not a judge of how much value these devices to bring to those people. If they want one just for the sake of enjoying it, fine. I do raise my eyebrows at folks who have them that I can assume the $$$ are better spent elsewhere.

I agree as well. Look I own Apple stock so i want everyone to be stupid but I think people that must have the latest and greatest without any real value are just plain dumb.

I think people that don’t put cases on their device because they want people to see what kind of phone they have are the worst.

I don’t think I’ve ever looked at a phone as a status symbol. Just epic stupidity.

All top of the line smartphones are now around $1,000 with or without sales tax! People like to buy stuff that they like and the Galaxies, Notes and iPhones are it. Pixel smartphones are nice too but do not sell well yet! Pixel has best camera now. iPhone still has the market share in the high price top tier smartphone market. iPhone retains their status as a luxury item - premium price, no discount product!

A guy at work has an iPhone X. He showed me the email app, photos app, google app, and the text app. Worked just like mine. Not sure why I need to spend $1300 for an X. Same schit.

I won't move to Apple. Why should I when I can pay things with just my watch? And I can do it on any kinds of card reader. I more frequently use my smart watch instead of my phone. I use it for credit card payment, messaging, phone calls, alarm, timer, weather monitoring, fitness tracking, etc.

Can Apple watch do payment on any credit card reader? Nope. My watch works not only on NFC machines, but also on older machines because my watch has MST technology built in it as well, not only NFC.

Another cool thing I can do is using my handwriting to write on the watch! It's dang convenient I can tell you that!

I’ve spent a month with the X now, upgrading from the 6. If you’re not a huge power user and all you want from your smartphone is just to make some phone calls, send some basic texts and emails, and check your news/sports apps every now and then, almost every smartphone will do ok these days – even the low-end Android phones.

I definitely experienced quite a performance boost from the 6 to the X just due to the hardware alone. When iOS11 was first released, it basically grinded my 6 to a halt, like it did for many others on MacRumors and other Apple boards. Extremely buggy and laggy, with frequent app crashes. Some of that was probably due to devs not promptly updating. A good chunk just due to Apple’s planned obsolescence, and the 1GB RAM in the 6 and 6+ obviously didn’t help (definitely the biggest bottleneck in performance). So jumping to the A11 Bionic SoC was quite a leap, and the geekbench scores (especially multicore) are just absurd. So definitely enjoyed a noticeable performance boost.

Aside from the obvious things like the OLED screen, the camera is a massive improvement over the 6 (4k 60fps + FiLMiCPro + gimbal = incredible video). This was one of biggest things I was looking forward to given how many photos and videos I take. I thought I would miss TouchID, but actually now prefer FaceID with the exception of it being a bit more of a pain in the butt when unlocking on my desk. It is very nice though not to have to worry anymore about unlocking the phone with sweaty hands on the tennis court or while working out. And while wireless charging probably isn’t a big deal to a lot of folks, it’s actually very, very convenient for me with wireless CarPlay. As an example, see 15:16 in this video

So while I still cringe at the price tag of the X (and the other flagship smartphones these days), I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the phone. May not be for everyone, and it’s not exactly a bang-for-the-buck product, but I am happy with the upgrade.

I have a 6S Plus. And honestly it doesn't hold a candle to the Alcatel One Touch Pop I got from Walmart in 2014 for 80 bucks.

I'm always afraid of losing it, it doesn't work properly with my Toshiba laptop, and it doesn't do anything that much better than an economy phone from a chain retailer. The camera is OK. But these flagship phones will always be overpriced. If I needed a high-end camera I'd spend $1000 on that instead of some small add-on.

I carry cash. We do get power outages in my area.

My smart watch has 10 days of battery life so charging is infrequent and it’s great for sleep analysis. The watch also supports multiple operating systems.

My 6 works fine. Camera sucks. But oh well. That’s what a Canon Mark 5D is for.

I went back to the 4" size and purchased a SE 128GB model! Love the compactness and easy to fit into my jeans and able to use everywhere even at the gym. Cannot do that with my 7+!

May look at the X when it comes out with the "sim free" model later in December and grab the 256GB model $1,149. I am a gadget guy so always want the latest! I know electronics is generally a bad buy and everything. LOL! I may wait next year for the upgrade in 5G LTE however and see if a smaller 5.2" is release. Have not decided what I really want.

Only if the screen size were bigger even I would buy one. I am a big Samsung Fan.
Still no one makes it big enough for my taste. I like it around 6.5" like mini pad

Tim Cook personally sent Steve Wozniak an iPhone X, Apple’s latest commercial and critical smash hit. Woz’s ringing endorsement of the flagship iPhone? “It works fine, but it’s not what I would want.”

Woz issued this verdict to an Australian newspaper while in the country to speak at the Pivot Summit in Geelong, Victoria. Cook invited Woz to try out the iPhone X after hearing that it was the first iPhone he didn’t plan to buy on “day one.”

At the time, Woz said didn’t really need the upgrade (and wasn’t convinced Face ID would work as well as promised).

“I’m happy with my iPhone 8 — which is the same as the iPhone 7, which is the same as the iPhone 6, to me,” Woz said back in October. “For some reason, the iPhone X is going to be the first iPhone I didn’t — on day one — upgrade to. But my wife will, so I’ll be close enough to see it.”

Apple dutifully sent over an iPhone X to Woz, who now says he “bit the bullet” and gave it a go. The result? He’s not a fan of Face ID.

“I think what I would want is Touch ID on the back,” he noted. “I’d want that more than anything. Face ID slows down my Apple Pay, and it fails enough times I have to keep typing the password.”



He continued: “I have friends who actually turned off Face ID and turned passwords on to make their phone simple to use.”

Apple is still the best
Despite this brutal slamming of the iPhone X’s killer feature, Woz said he still likes Apple more than its rivals.

“If you look at Google, Facebook and Amazon, we’re really being taken advantage of,” he said. “We’re the weak guy, and they’re the big powerful guy exerting their power, continually getting more power and wealth over us.” Woz said that, of all the tech giants, “Apple is the one that makes its money off of good products.”

This isn’t the first time Woz expressed views counter to what Apple would no doubt prefer. Previously, he suggested that Apple should consider building an Android device, called the Apple Watch a “luxury fitness band,” and likened Steve Jobs’ personality to that of Donald Trump — not in an altogether favorable way.

Sometimes Woz walks back these types of comments at a later date. However, provided the iPhone X quotes are legitimate, it seems pretty clear that Woz isn’t going to be wheeled out by Apple as a cuddly spokesman anytime soon.

This is the time of the year when Face ID would be nice. It's cold and dry and washing hands frequently to avoid cold and flu means that your fingerprints change slightly. So I have to reprogram the iPhone 7+ every week to that Touch ID works. It's interesting that I don't have to do this on the iPhone 6 because the Touch ID on that model isn't as sensitive.

This guy has good points about FaceID that makes me believe I would not be happy with it. TouchID is just too easy. FaceID seems like it would be an epic PITA.

“I'm on the fence. I've got my 7 here still, but I bought and have been using an X for about three weeks.

As a piece of hardware, it's both beautiful and brilliant. Very fast, great battery life.

I have two general categories of reservations.

As far as UI/UX goes, I think iOS 11 has a number of places where things could be better on the X. Control center feels awkward and is a two hand effort unless you invoke reachability, which is a fairly high-miss gesture, at least for me, because it's not really clear when you need to start from, and if you bobble the gesture you launch dock apps. I would like a numerical battery percentage display rather than going back to the old iPod Touch graphic-only display. Unlocking feels a little awkward because it requires a screen tap and correct orientation of the phone - for example, it doesn't work on a desk or table or in most vehicles. These are examples...

FaceID, which I initially thought was amazing, is...amazing but also amazingly limited. As mentioned, it doesn't work on a desk or in a vehicle unless you move the phone to the right place and angle to scan your face. It has proven to be a giant handicap with ApplePay, which I use frequently. TouchID was simple: grab the phone by the Home button and jab it at the reader - done. FaceID is a PITA: double-click the side button; make sure the phone is at the right distance and in the correct orientation to scan your face, then move it to the reader. I get it right the first time no more than maybe 60% of the time. The phone is prone to unlocking at times when I don't want it to, and discrete checks of notifications on the lock screen don't seem to work very well.

The OLED display is absolutely gorgeous, so good I am not sure I am actually willing to go back to my 7, which I used to think had a great display. However, dimming is achieved digitally with PWM (pulse width modulation), which basically means rapidly reading power to the display (240Hz). The means the display flickers, and it gives a fair number of users headaches.

It's hard. There's a lot I really love and would be really reluctant to give up. But overall, I feel there are some real limitations, especially with FaceID. My current feeling is that FaceID is making me work for the phone, rather than the other way around. I am tilting slightly toward returning it. Fortunately, because I bought it on the 19th of November, I have about another month before the return period.”

Samsung Gear S3 with Samsung Pay is a much better buy. I use my watch instead of my credit card and I often get some gifts from Samsung Pay. Last one, Samsung Pay gave me a 10 dollar gift card.. Used it to get groceries at my local supermarket yeah yeah.
