Is capitalism killing itself with automatisation?

Automatisation sounds nice for companies because it saves the companies money but who is going to buy the stuff companies make when nobody has a job?

Will companies go broke because nobody has enough money to buy the stuff?

There needs to be a large enough buyers market to support the companies, right?

I don't think this will be an immediate problem as automatisation also creates new jobs like software dev guys but what is when artifical intelligence is so advanced that it can develope and improve software and hardware on it's own?

I think it'll take a long time to get there. Have you seen some of the software out there? I don't think we're going to have a skynet anytime soon. I think this whole self driving cars in 10 years thing is very ambitious. You need to change the whole infrastructure to support that. You'd need built-in GPS, cameras, sensors, all kinds of things to make self-drive a reality. What if someone was able to hack a system and throw you off course? Would they allow the ability to override? If people haven't driven in a long time, or never have and suddenly need to would they be able to? Wouldn't that reduce police force if self-driving was successful and there were no issues? I mean nobody would be speeding, so no need for cops on the road. Security would be the biggest thing with automation once it's reliable. If someone can hack it and make it do something else, just imagine the damage that could happen. Unless you have a Jarvis for everything, then I don't know what any of us would do. Probably get off the forum and go play tennis I guess.

This already happens due to the intentional suppression of wages growth, particularly acute after the GFC of 2008, so we don't need to wait for next-wave automation.

But companies going broke or consolidating is not the real problem. It's the immiserisation of larger swathes of the population and the development of 'dark politics' that needs attention.

All much better alternatives overall to allowing humans to drive

Is capitalism killing democracy? This is the more urgent question. The solution to the side-effects of automation involves the sharing of its benefits. But that requires more democracy, not less.

Why not just have the king redistribute?

The King usually levies taxes or goes into debt to fight foreign wars, despite occasional exceptions.

It's not that simple. Let's say you have Ford, Chevy, Honda and Tesla as driverless cars. What controls them? Is there a nationwide system that alerts each of them if there's an accident so they slow down? What if one system is bigger than the others and fails, causing a bigger pileup? What if a system is hacked? Is there an override to allow humans to drive? What if that fails in time? This isn't Minority Report, this is real life. What if someone hacked a system and was able to change the GPS just slightly to throw everyone off? That trusty auto drive with GPS is now off enough and since you're not paying attention you don't realize that you're 100 miles away from where you expected to be. We're not that advanced or that secure to pull this off.

It's killing us all. Maybe it's killing itself too.

Capitalism creates wealth as long the economic growth is faster than the growth of productivity.

People were afraid automatisation would cost jobs already when the first weaving machines came out like 200 years ago and while it did cost some jobs more new jobs were created due to economic growth.

An issue occurs only if growth of productivity outpaces growth of GDP because that means less money goes to the workers. This is a danger for the employees but also the companies as this kills the buying power of the market.

Capitalism really isn't bad and it has worked but it cab can only work as long there is economic growth and ideally it grows more than the productivity (amount of stuff an hour of labor builds).

Productivity growth is outpacing wages growth because capital has used state power to crush unions and workers.
