Is it time to have separate majors for the men and women?

Separate the tours?

With Serena Williams calls of sexism, and seemingly, some male players agreeing with her, is it time to separate the men and women completely?

Adjust the calender accordingly. Been done before.

Each tour could employ it's own officials: address it's own prize money: separate sponsorship/tv rights etc.

No more arguments about which gender gets preferential courts etc.

I appreciate the mixed would also have to be factored in with a separate calander.

If sexism is a factor. Take it away.
And let the public/media/sponsors decide which is more viable/appealing.

Separating men and women is sexism, it means women are treated as inferior, they should play in the same tour.
Why? What other sports have majors involving both genders outside the Olympics, mixed doubles and possibly other racquet sports?

Yes, it's time for men and women to be separated, by then, we can then compare the true number on what women would earn on a prize money according to revenue percent. I doubt that it will happen although for one following reason: WTA doesn't want to lose is the huge prize money if the attendance doesn't compare to men. It's the true for all other sport where men tend to get more attention than women when it comes to TV rating and attendance. For each federation making money would double the revenue if they were to be held at different dates: 2 weeks for men plus another 2 weeks for women on same court. Only Wimbledon cannot do is separate the dates and they tend to tear up grass at end of the Championship for next Championship at Center Court to maintain the quality of the soil unless they build another facility to maintain the grass with new stadium.

This is the current situation. It's called the ATP and the WTA. Slams do their own thing. And will continue to do so.

It's not open to change because it is very profitable for the slams the way it is even if America can't organise an event that doesn't begin and end in controversy!

So therefore it's not open to change? I'm surprised you take that stance.

But, as you feel it's a "stupid" thread I'm sure you won't feel the need to comnent further.

:)

What if all sports were wrong? Except contact sports.

The harsh truth is women are not made for professional sports, they're weak.

This thread is just stupid.
Beyond stupid shows ignorance of what the Majors are and how they're run.

They already do what the poster requests. The Majors aren't ATP or WTA events. They already have seperate money, sponsors, rules, and control who plays and when.

Majors are effectively invitationals and the WTA and ATP piggy back onto them for ranking points. They are not answerable directly to either organisation. Majors are free to do as they please and ATP / WTA have the right to contract and ban players from participating if they want.

There's give and take on all sides and as a player you can boycott without direct penalty which has occurred through the open era.

There was a piece today from Mr Ings stating USO paid umpires so little in past compared to other events it was boycotted by many top umpires in the past.

This unfortunately is not good time or responce to the events by S Williams, WTA and B. King and they do risk losing dual events like Madrid and Miamionce out of contract. And given I've heard WTA pushing for more joint bigger value events waking the haters won't help.

I like my Majors joint events and removal of men's and woman's days have made the events more popular. Prize money is not an excuse as it is a small fraction of revenue and does not currently represent players true worth, if it did non top 10 player would get diddly squat and doubles.....

Ignore move on

Would make getting a ticket easier...twice the events. More actual tennis on t.v. Instead.of being inundated with so many matches at once, they are spread out over a longer time period for easier viewing.

I haven't been to a slam, but would think that people who frequently go wouldn't care too much for it. Wouldn't have all that star power at one place and time. Would be interesting to maybe have a trial separation. If the WTA starts to fold, like women s golf, then both tours could rejoin in sexist bliss.

That’s at least an interesting idea. Look at other sports. There is the NBA and it’s separate from the WNBA and that seems to work out fine for the fans. It also would help alleviate some of the grievances the women have about equality and sexism. So, if a player feels they’re treated unfairly we at least eliminate that it’s due to sexism. Each league could set their own rules, 3
Sets, 5 sets, heat rule, female only judges, even lineswomen. We already have some of that in certain tournaments. If the USTA takes Serena’s fight to heart and tennis needs radical change this should at least be discussed and possibly considered.

That's because you compare them with the men. No woman can run like Usain Bolt today. We are not pitting men against women. We are pitting women against women and men against men. It is a different sport. We like to see how they battle it out within a set boundary of variance. Whether one finds it entertaining or not is a different question.

Thank you for this post.
I was hoping to receive reasoned responses.
Not knee jerk reactions.

I'm not against light hearted posts either.

It's not a different sport, it's the same sport played on a lower level.

No special category for weak, ill, slow men, why should we have one for women? Isn't gender equality about all people having the same opportunity regardless of their sex?

There is a category for disabled of course, below 18 (boys and girls championships), seniors etc. I don't see the point. Men and women are different. We needn't force-fit things.

I agree with the OP then.

Only serena has made it sound really bad. Only her.

Solution? Make her play on ATP. Then u will hear about it less

Spot on!!!! When and if Serena breaks the record the wta will be in trouble and they should be embracing Osaka because she is the only hope after Serena is gone. Like the WNBA vs NBA?
Stephan curry makes 35 million a year where the best WNBA player makes about 100k!!!!! How's that for equality!!!!!

Yeah, it's because she is a woman!
Nole should complain of sexism and racism. No one here seems to care about his comeback and second slam of the year. Just one thread with five poasts by two fans.

One day we'll be telling our grandchildren with pride .. I was there .. that day when Serena blew her gasket ! I watched it live !

Agreed. WTA needs ATP and male players to stay relevant, and to gain power since this is what they are after, not equality. Period.

Anything you do that I decide I do not like, at any point in time (even if my current beliefs are in direct conflict with my past beliefs), is wrong and therefore will be labeled whatever offensive term I choose (sexist, racist, etc...)

And sadly this is what the USA has turned into. I don't want to speak for the rest of the world since I don't get enough exposure to world news/politics.
