As far as I was aware, Britain wasn't attempting to colonise any country in South America (excluding Guyana).
The early 19th-century was when many Latin American nations broke away from colonial control.

This was some years before Latin American nations gained independence from Spain.

Thanks for the info. I have to admit that my knowledge of that period of history has grown hazy over time.
I wasn't aware that the UK was actively trying to colonise parts of South America at that time.
I know that Britain had a lot of "soft power" over many Latin American nations in the 19th-century, in terms of trade, cargo, building railways, etc.

Yes, though Spain had the formal power on the Rio de la Plata, starting the XIX century Britain began to build the most important of all: the economic influence.
Buenos Aires imported manufactured goods from Britain (after the Industrial Revolution), most of them via contraband, as Spain did not formally allow their colonies to trade with other countries.
