Is there a reason to watch the French when u know whos gonna win?

There is always a reason to watch a pro match.

I normally record matches. When I watch them, I don't really watch the rally, I primarily focus on their footwork and preparation. It's amazing to see the kind of footwork the pros have in getting them place to hit each ball.

Hmmm, my reason would be that I enjoy playing and watching good tennis.
Your reason for not watching is probably because you prefer making an arse out of yourself (through your lack of tennis knowledge and intelligence) on a tennis related forum.
To each their own I say ...

Edit.
I'm convinced Sampras would have given Nadal a run for his money in the Roland Garros final, and would have made it competitive...unlike Federer. Oh wait ... no... he probably would have lost in the second round to Ramon Delgado...bummer.

LOL, good reply . :)

Just give Nadal his 5th RG and lets skip to Wimbeldon shall we? Nadal is so far ahead of the pack on this court its ridiculous.. He has no rival there. Its sad

Kinda reminiscent of when Federer was the clear favourite a few years back at Wim or USO.

Perhaps, if you don't like it, then don't watch?

That was much worse in Feds period of dominance (04-07). Nadal is an automatic at RG but not 3 out of the 4 slams as Fed was

"Maybe" the final won't be competitive, but we could have some good competitive matches in the earlier rounds. Esp, federer-djokovic in the SFs, if it happens, could be a good one.

Oh and I won't mind watching nadal play 'flawless' clay-court tennis either, maybe not watch all the matches, but a few of them.

Tyson was a nutcase first of all and didnt take the match seriously with Buster and appeared to be a bit out of shape. Nadal is NONE OF THESE. Hes the mentally toughest player on tour and is always ready to play
Since you clearly have a fantastic grasp on sports and upsets, here is a list of famous upsets that you can try and 'debunk' as you have the Tyson fight.

I also forgot to mention... WHO THE HELL WAS SO GREAT that Tyson fought and beat? a majority of these guys were passsed their primes or just plain bums. Larry Holmes? LOL Tyson could dish it out be he couldnt take it. He had a chin of rubber. Not a chin of steel. Tysons dominance was just an illusion over a very weak boxing field. He never dealt with the fighters Ali dealt with. So Tyson felt unbeatable and cocky, thus when Buster KO'd the overrated Nutjob

And upsets happen.. Big deal. Losing 13 out of 18 matches to Nadal is NOT an upset.

You've covered the Tyson fight. Plenty of others to go through. Upsets do happen. Which is why you WATCH the French Open. That was difficult wasn't it.

You totally missed the point I was making. My point was that anything can happen in sports. The players still have to walk onto the courts and win the match.

I'm baffled that you thought I was comparing Mike Tyson's mental toughness to Rafa's. I'm not even going to comment on it.

For that very reason.. the FO is gonna be interesting. Victory is always sweeter when you defy the odds....

How about this scenario.... Murray or Djokovic takes nadal at the semis and Fed makes it from the side and wins the finals. Is that possible?

A win is a win right????

Or Federer overcomes his fear of Nadal and beats him at the FO. Epic victory. Highly unlikely though.

And if that did happen, Conquistador would be all over Federer like a rabid dog x_X

Murray wont get anywhere near the semis at the french I don't know why people keep saying this he is average on clay and wont get past the 4th round.

I agree. Victory is also sweeter when u prove all ur critics/doubters wrong. Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions. The FO is still relatively far away and what if Rafa doesn't have a good lead-up to the FO (i.e. losing many clay court matches). We don't know what form he will be in so we can't "know whos gonna win".

Yes Rafa could lose a lot of clay court matches :???:... and Roddick could win 2 clay Masters and RG :)? Hum wait a second, there's something weird about those predictions...

lol But Roddick could win the 2 clay masters and the FO and surprise everybody :)

He would be more than a "one slam wonder" then :)

This is exactly the kind of fan "arrogance" that Nadal doesn't need. I find it odd that many Nadal fans would rail on Federer fans for just this kind of assumption, and having them proven wrong, would turn around and engage in it themselves. Very silly. Nadal can lose the French, no question. He has to earn it every time, and every year is different.

Right. Many people consider Fed the GOAT. The pressures on him. ;)

If anything, the pressure is on Nadal at the FO. Nadal better not say Federer is the favorite (if they play in the final) cause he himself knows all too well that HE is the favorite to win and not Federer (for once)

There is definitely a lot of pressure on Rafa at the French this year. He's trying to do what Federer was trying to do at Wimbledon in 08 by trying to pass the consecutive Wimbledon win record. Pass Borg's record of consecutive FO wins.

This will be his first time there as number 1 and the defending champ. Even though he has been the favorite there before, nothing like the favorite he will be this year.

I think Rafa and his team are very good at handling this kind of a situation, but nonetheless, there's a lot of pressure. So yeah, there's a reason to watch the French among 100s of others.

Great point! I agree 100%.

I think Rafa's very vulnerable at the French this year. All the pressure and all the attention are on him. He has nothing to gain if he wins and too much to lose if he doesn't.

Yes but you could see it coming right? 2007 final 5 sets, remember? When you look at RG 2008 final, do you see an upset coming? OK, I think you got my point...

Rafa is very good at handling pressure. In 2008 he played 3 times against Djokovic with the impending risk of becoming #3 in the world (Hamburg, RG and Queen's). He didn't show any nerves, did he?

I know and I was so impressed how great he was under pressure. But how long can he keep that up? Fed didn't show how fragile he was until recently. People used to think he's mentally strong too until he had to face someone stonger.

Besides, he's the man to beat right now and Fed'll be more determined than ever.

I doubt that Fed's determination will be enough. To be completely honest with you, I don't think Fed is the guy Nadal will worry about the most this year, I would go so far as to say that Federer will be the last thing he worries about, Rafa has his number and he will keep that edge relatively easily IMO. The guys that are gonna be dangerous for Rafa are Murray, Tsonga, possibly Verdasco, etc and other young "hungry" players. You have to admit for instance that at AO, the player who got the closest to eliminating Rafa was Verdasco, not Federer.
About the pressure, Rafa stayed #2 for 3 years without wavering for a single week even when he was injured. At W and AO which were tremendously significant finals for his career, you didn't see him tremble. You didn't see him tremble either when tying Borg's record at FO (quite the opposite!) Nadal thrives under pressure, I don't think that's a gift he's gonna lose any time soon. He may be outplayed by someone at some point but I don't think it will be because of cracking under pressure. Rafa has one of the most invincible mental skills in the history of tennis.

This is the way it was with Fed for a number years. Clay was the one time when you thought you might see a different winner.

So, the tides are changing . . . .

Agree about all those youngster plus Verdasco (cos he isn't that young). More reason to watch FO.:)

BTW, When I refered to Federer's chance I thought about the possibility of Nadal getting elliminated before the final. I still think Fed'd take the title if he played anyone else in the final but Nadal. Having said that Fed has more chance to get eliminated by these youngsters before the final. It'd be interesting IF Nadal has to play a guy not name Federer in a GS final. He hasn't done that for years. Do you think he'd have more pressure to play a new guy in the final (compare to playing Federer whom he knows he can beat)?

I don't think it will make a difference for Nadal especially at RG where his confidence is so high. He will approach that final with the same "all business, can't lose" attitude. It may make a difference for the spectator though as it may be less one sided if the guy is less scared of Rafa than Fed, but frankly which player wouldn't shake in his sneakers at the thought of playing Nadal in the final of RG? I can't find a name right now :)

You mean something similar to what your boy Sampras had at Wimbledon from 1993-2000? Or what Fed had from 2003-2007 at Wimbledon too? Why did we even watch? Wimbledon must have been very boring for the better part of 15 years.

Sure you should watch. Nadal will lose one day. Nobody wins forever. I would love to see the one who has to strangle the title from him. You know Nadal will not go down without a fight. That will be one great match.

Yes he will lose at the FO one day. But it is unlikely to happen this year.
