After a long 4 day weekend in Orlando which included drinking eleventy beers while watching my team at nationals, I returned to NY and began my training for 40+ greatness in 2022.

I have hardly played the past couple years since Covid, but I have been hitting, teaching and playing practice sets with fellow pros and friends so my tennis skills are not so dull.

In this thread I will chronicle my adventures and journey in the hopes that it provides some value (tennis or entertainment) to those reading.

Feel free to ask questions.

Gotta go work out now, but I will add more tomorrow, just wanted to get this thread started.

So at your level, what kinds of improvements or goals do you have?
Do you still work on technical improvements or mostly patterns and strategy?
What kind of beer?

I think I can still get much better, especially relative to the field because most others aren't trying to get better. My goal is to be #1 in the 40s, in the US or maybe the world if I can figure out how to play enough ITFs. And also play on the Sr. Davis cup team at the world championships in Croatia.

I still work on technical improvements, probably because I am a coach. I don't generate enough hand speed or get enough extension on my backhand, and I am forever tinkering with my serve.

I think I am pretty tactically sound, especially in singles. Most improvements will come from higher ball quality, increased fitness, and movement/footwork.

Bud Lite, Youngling, PBR, Fat Tire, Dragons Milk, and Einstock.

Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing this unfold.

Are you going to be working with a coach or is this a one man wolfpack situation?

I will definitely be getting some coaching along the way.

I always felt that it was important to continue to play even as a coach, and if you don't pay for coaching yourself it's almost like selling something you don't believe in.

Ok, so my plans include cleaning up my diet by eating red meat only once a week, cutting down carbs and fried food and sugar. I drink one cup of bone broth, and half a cup of beet juice with tumeric and ginger. I've cut down drinking alcohol and coffee, only one cup of coffee at least 3 days per week and no alcohol at least 3 days per week.

Fitness plans include riding my bike 2-3x per week and working out 2-3x per week.

Tennis plans are to work on first serve, backhand, volleys and movement at least once a week. To play 2 practice singles and 2 practice doubles matches per week and 2 real matches at least per month and one lesson per week.

Thanks, foam rolling and stretching are musts for sure. As well as the occasional theragun. I do a good amount of dynamic flexibility stuff in my workouts but could for sure use more a more steady static flexibility program at home.

My knee has been bothering me the past couple months so stretching, strengthening the muscles around it and getting some weight off it are my plans for long term improvement.

How much hardcourt tennis do you play, compared to soft/natural surfaces?

Do you have much sprung hardcourt in the US?

Invest in a TRX. If it's good enough for muscle machine Zverev, then it's good enough for anyone.

And work your glutes and adductors to rule out them being part of your knee issues.

Not sure where I got it from in the past, but I thought you were vegan or diebetic or such? Something along those lines, so you already had a modified diet?

Ok, week 1 is in the books.

Last Monday at the start I tipped the scales at 206lbs, this morning I am down 4lbs to 202lbs; -4lbs total, 22lbs to goal weight.

This week I drank no alcohol or bad/sugary drinks for 6/7 days. Only one cup of coffee M-F, and two cups on the weekend days because we went out for breakfast. Carbs were limited to 2 dinners, one small bowl of pasta and one small bowl of rice, I had red meat once, and chicken/fish the rest of the week.

I rode my bike only once this week, I'd like to get that up to 3x or at least 2x, so if I can't ride my actual bike because of weather or whatever, I need to just go into work 45 minutes early and ride in the gym for 30 mins before I start lessons.

I worked out twice, took it easy doing a lot of dynamic strength, power, and balance stuff. I felt a little sore and gooey for a few days after since I haven't touched a weight in about two years. My balance was still good and my legs were fairly strong still. Going to lift heavier since I don't have a real match this week so I won't care if I am leaking some oil. Looking forward to the 6 weeks of easy gains and rapid improvement, then I will reassess. Will probably go up to 3x weekly workouts after the first 6 weeks.

I had three practice sessions this week, one with my assistant where we worked on volleys, and serves; one with a strong 4.5 friend where we hit around, did some cross courts and some serving points; one with a 5.0 teammate we hit for 10 minutes up the middle, 10 minutes of cross courts each direction, 10 minutes of volleys and overheads, warm up serves, and played 2 10 point tiebreakers. I played pretty well, won both supers 10-2 and only double faulted once. Instead of general practices I would like to specifically work on my first serve, volley, backhand, and movement more specifically at least once per week.

I played 4 practice matches and one real match this week.

Singles Practice #1 W: 6-3, 6-1

I played a 4.5 pro from another club, big tall rangy athletic guy, good serve, attacking forehand, backhand that he tends to slice to extend rallies.
The club is a fast indoor hard court, with sub optimal lighting.
I focused on early prep for my groundstrokes and it was a huge asset especially in being offensive off his neutral slices.
I tried to accentuate the turn and sit on my serve to get my left hip and buttcheek into the court, seemed to add spin at the expense of pace.
I changed my mindset on return, fixing my vision into a cone of possibility. I will investigate this further.

Singles Practice #2 W: 6-3, 7-6(5)

I played a 40+ 5.0 pro from my club, prototypical all court player, fantastic touch.
The club is indoor clay, dry hard and skiddy.
I continued to focus on early prep, still needs work.
I changed the focus on my serve to peaking my acceleration just after contact and that added back the pace I had traded off in the first match.
I finished very well at the net, coming in when I recognized he would float a deep slice to neutralize my power shots.

Doubles Practice #1 W: 6-2, 6-2

I played with a 4.0 singles player against a good 5.0 girl and good 4.5 guy.
Indoor clay.
I served well, second serves were especially nasty. I struggled to keep a positive attitude and on paper this should be a match that we would be the underdogs in, but the force was not with our opponents this day.

Doubles Practice #2 W: 6-4, 5-4 (timed out)

I played with a 4.5 woman against a 5.0 woman and 4.5 man.
I was pretty confident we would win despite the scores being close, just knew I had to be patient and play ok and the cards would fall in our favor.
My serve was not as good as the rest of the week, my legs were a little tired and I was losing a bit of balance in the toss. I did not think this was a good omen as I had a full day of lessons and a hit with a 5.0 guy that day before my mixed match.

USTA Mixed 9.0 W: 6-4, 6-2

We played a 4.0 guy and a 5.0 girl. The guy was strong for a 4.0 and the girl was weak for a 5.0 so it was a little more like a 4.5/4.5 match.
Fast indoor hard court.
I served adequately though my legs were very tired and my balance was off, my netplay, midcourt game and improvisation were all good. I returned adequately maybe a minus for me but my return is my best asset.
The guy had an elephant gun for a first serve, and maybe I was too stubborn with my return position. I will consider moving back but it's really not who I am.
Overall I played really well, and my partner played great. It was my first USTA match since 5.0 ended in June, and my first mixed match in about a year.

Overall I feel really good, my back was hurting a bit last night but is ok now, my knee is doing better.

I need to keep getting my legs stronger so that I can train while teaching a full schedule of lessons.

IMO the tough part for US players is the tournament structure. The nationals - what's left of them - are spread out all over the country and last for days on end, necessitating a lot of time off work. It's expensive and time-consuming. USTA 5.0 is better than nothing but it's not very long and does not compare with what is available to players in other countries.

I wish you the best of luck and thanks for sharing the journey with the forum.

Ya, it really sucks and there are very few tournaments in the US that give ITF points.

I'm looking at a couple in Canada.

Do you mean Eisbock, the Schneider Weiss Aventinus one? I haven't seen that beer on the shelves in years. I remember it having a high ABV content.

Singles, but I will play dubs any time I can get a partner. Mixed too.

I don't know if I can make the top 10 how I currently am, probably because I would just have to play a lot.

But the point is not to figure out how good I am, it's to see how good I can get.

No, I'd be lucky to scrape a few games; 13+ UTR is above my pay grade. I used to have a handful of guys at that level to practice with but they have moved away or gone to college or are out traveling.

I love seeing people like him playing at a level that high though, it makes me think the effects of age are overstated or can be mitigated. People blame being old when in reality they are out of shape or stopped training or never were good in the first place.

I would say just having a plan is a win regardless of outcome. You are still alive and kickin with some fight left in you. That's saying something after these two years ... proof of life. Pirate ain't dead yet ... that brings a smile to my face.

Don't rush it on the front end ... you are pretty damn old. ;)

btw ... back in the/my day ... top state 4.5 and 40s were pretty close. You would have easily been #1 40 in the state. The 40+ ex-D1+ played either Championship/5.0 or hung around in the open/$ division. Sounds like 40s now has turned into a biaaaaatch.

I can easily be #1 40s in Eastern. Looking for nationally or ITF.

I could currently play DI, not ranked but still DI.

Yeah ... makes sense nationals would bring in the ringers ... and pirates. Still able to play D1 singles is impressive. I saw ex-top D1 play high level open $ doubles through 50ish ... but 40ish tended to be the end of road for open singles. Our head pro was ex-#1 singles at a top tennis program ... some pro qualifying tournaments ... and he was still winning open singles until around 40. That seemed crazy good to me back then ... he was still one of the fastest guys on the court even in late 30s. That said ... now you see players like Fed, Nadal, Djokovic play at the top of the game past 35. Not just hanging on ... still dominating ... crazy.

Another monster day. 3 days into the week and I have 7 practice sets in, 5 singles and 2 mixed, and a practice session with one of my former kids who is home from college and worked out once.

Playing dubs tomorrow at 7am, then doing the Thanksgiving thing, then back on the horse Friday.

Enjoying a hard cider and home cooked dinner tonight. I think I have earned it.
