Jeff Tarango comeback

He was an American pro in the 90's. I think his highest ranking was in the 40's or so. He was a solid player, but also a bit of a D-bag who literally picked up his bags and left in the middle of a match at Wimbledon once after arguing with the umpire, after which his wife walked on and slapped the umpire in the face.

Jeff Tarango actually compares to John McEnroe in that they both were great American junior champions that went on to Stanford to win both singles and doubles NCAA championships, then left school to play the pro tour. The comparison on the pro tour is only that both players had lots of trouble with umpires and bad attitudes. Tarrango was never a singles threat to win a slam but did get to almost 40 in the World. He is really a smart player which made him a much better doubles player getting to 10 in the World and reaching the final in the men's doubles at the 1999 French Open. Tarango partnered with Goran Ivanišević in that 99 FO, what an combustible team :) I would love to see some more the the old greats attempt to win some current tournaments. If Jeff could only get Johnny Mac to play some dubs, that would be pretty sensational. Its more likey Mac would get Pete Sampras to make such a comback attempt.

I like it, he looks like he's in good shape (based on the one minute clinics on TTC) so why not take a shot ?

If you scroll down far enough...
You'll see something about Stepanek and Vaidisova not dating anymore...
And I quote...

Radek Stepanek and Nicole Vaidisova are no longer dating, according to Czech journalists at Wimbledon.

Actually now I can active my decoding device. "Stepanek is no longer dating Vaidisova" is the secret signal . . . splinter cells across the country have been notified.

I liked him, he was entertaining. Never knew what to expect with him.

He has that 1-minute clinic on TTC where he tells his students to hit as hard as they can straight at the back fence. I think this was his favorite drill after losses back when he was on tour. :) I don't see how it can possibly help anyone's game.

all i remember is one sentence about the guy, "He was a dick"

oh my I love that chair umpire. As a fellow ref in a different sport that is simply classic.

I guess commentating on some of the Outback Legends events convinced him he could take a swipe at some of the younger cats. He'd have better luck against the senior players only he doesn't qualify to play the tour.

I'm pretty sure his 2nd round qualifying match was rained out today. Hope he somehow gets into the main draw at age 40. Since I'm a lefty, I always root for him. Plus, I know his hitting partner/"coach" in L.A.
Guess who else is trying a comeback at age 40? Michael Stich. (He'll play doubles in Germany soon.)

Perhaps he is attempting the comeback because he'd like to win the Edberg good sportsmanship award - after coming so very close to winning it several times in his career.

The very definition of a class 'A' jerk...
