John Mcenroe : ‘Federer is 40 in tennis, it’s like 65 in another job’

Roger Federer is probably one of the greatest tennis players of all time. The legend from Switzerland who is known for being fiercely competitive on the field is one of the most humble and humane individuals off the field. However, the 20 time Grand Slam champion has been away from the action for a while now.

The reason behind that is the recurring knee injury which forces the champion to go for multiple surgeries. Yet again in 2021, Federer faced a few issues with his knees and decided to withdraw from the US Open and the rest of the season. Commenting on what the future looks like for Federer, former World No. 1 John McEnroe had a few things to say.

‘You don’t want to see Roger Federer if he’s 30 or 40 in the world’: John McEnroe

In a recent interaction with ESPN, John McEnroe was asked if it’s time for Federer to say goodbye to the game. In reply, he said, “I wish I knew Roger well enough to answer that. To me, I don’t think he’d want to go out where he never played again. He could walk around any tennis stadium in the world as much as he’d like, he would get a standing ovation I would assume.

McEnroe went on to add that it is actually frustrating to see Federer in his 40’s as he is clearly struggling against the younger players. “I just don’t want to see him out there where he’s. I experienced it myself, I know how frustrating it is. He’s way better than I ever was. You don’t want to see Roger Federer, if he’s 30 or 40 in the world,” he said.

In the end, McEnroe concluded by claiming that it doesn’t really matter if Federer retires formally or informally as he has done enough to hold his head high. “Roger has been more fortunate. It caught up to him. But he’s 40. I mean, 40 in tennis, even now, is like 65 in another job. Either way he’s going to be able to hold his head high,” he stated.

Without a doubt, Federer has been simply magnificent through the years. Needless to say, tennis fans across the globe would be itching to see him script a grand comeback on the court in the near future.

At my job 65 yo is in average better that 40 yo... So... It's all relative... Even at 40 yo uninjured Fed is better that 99.9% of the tour...

With advancement in nutrition and medical technology? Not even close. Hell look at Tom Brady. Hes got like 4 years on Fed and still dominating. Fed didn't take care of his fitness like Djokovic.. You can tell by the baby fat/paunch he has carried around for years now. No excuse for that when he has more money than the federal government

Well he had been going since 1990 so it was natural but damn it happened hard and fast. Was hard seeing the most athletic big man ever reduced to that state.

True bro

For a guy who is 6'10 to jump like that, he has done it multiple times over the years, he is truly a beast athletically.

Undertaker and Big Show, considering their size and built, their athleticism was tremendous ...

Total respect to both of them, it is hard to hate both of them, at every point of WWF/WWE viewing as a fan never hated these guys even when they did -ve things

I was upset when the Undertaker lost at hell in a cell to Brock Lesnar

But everything pales in comparison to he losing to that piece of trash ROMAN REIGNS

Guys please. This isn't a wrestling thread. Try to show a little respect for the vast majority who aren't interested in that stuff.

Problem is Fed did take care of his fitness but he has a red hot ATG like Novak also taking care of his body at the finest, significantly younger, nothing can be done about it.

In a same age scenario, Fed would probably have stomped Novak

You would love to see him bageled again on grass ?
How about a double bagel this time?
Why not. I wanted to see Rafa beaten by Novak and Fed bageled by Novak. At least fed ate a bagel by someone And luckily at his most favorite tournament. 2 would be much better.

Dumb numbers because in other areas some people are still at the top of their game at 90.

Nearly every player on the tour takes care of their body (injuries aside). None of it'll turn back the clock. I'm no less fit than I was at 25, but I'm not even close to the athlete I used to be. He wouldn't need Novak to out him at his age. Most of these kids would do.

Yeah, thats right.
Fed always was physically behind Novak since 2010, I don't see how Fed at 30 could have reversed his inferior athleticism to someone superior to him at 24.

Djokovic is genetically gifted as a tennis athlete. That's why he outlasted Federer in almost every match that went distance.

djoko and fed are two different players..
fedr outplays people, djoko out grinds them so fitness is more important to him
i dont think djoko is going to keep getting to GS finals in a couple years time

Wooo boy. Maybe should've worded that differently.

Ya maybe I should have worded better but that is true

In Nadal's case the athletic gap can be narrowed since he slowed a bit and his game had too many holes, serve, low bounce weakness and such things, but in Novak's case he isn't that bad in Fed's fav hunting grounds as Nadal is and with age he has maintained his body far better than Nad ever could, such things made a lot of difference :D

Fed has always been a bigger guy than Djok though. But yeah. He's not a vegan. Still a bit old school in his approach.

Alright, you had me laughing a while there. The explanation's better, but I'll stick to my WTA safety for now. A storm's brewing.

Are people forgetting the guy had match points against the wannabe GOAT just a couple of years ago?

Thats 1 match on Grass, yes Fed is better on grass

But what about the Aus open ? Fed got stomped in straight sets in 2011 Semis at AO vs Novak. Now Fed was nearing 30, but still man, he wasn't that bad, straight sets ?? .... Hmm that raises doubts on Fed's hitting power vs Novak at his best

On Plexi Fed is definetly below Novak, that belting proved it sadly.

At the USO and W Fed is the boss, not bossy enough, but still can say he is the boss.

At FO he had a bossy performance in 11 but then Novak won in 12

Djokovic hedged his bets (partly genetic) and went with low weight, low muscles, high stamina and high durability approach. He is a tennis player, not a boxer. Current world no.2 Medvedev is also skinny. Zverev is skinnier than many. All these players can counterpunch, still hit with high intensity and maybe sometimes its going to be worse for them vs a power hitter, but mostly over the span of a tournament, they are fresher than the rest. I am adding Zverev in this, he was legit there in USOpen till semis. He has already proven he can play hard, clay, indoors, outdoors etc. This year he lost to Djokovic (2 times both hard fought matches) and Tsitsipas (hard fought match). He didn't lose because he was very tired.

That's the way forward it seems. Fed was never heavy, tremendous athlete. But those heavier than Fed are not great in BO5 nowadays.

Even if it's peak Fed vs. peak Djoko, Fed can't win them all, just happens. So that's what AO11 was, compounded by the slower AO surface and Fed no longer really peak in 2011, even though he was close to it. 2011, we saw what happens when Djokovic is not on his best surface, match points down to Fed at both other slams.

Agreed

Peak to peak Fed wins over Novak at W and USO, also has a fighting chance on Clay.

Definitely true. Even 70pct fit Federer would have won Indian Wells without dropping a set unless he got bored.

Murray the best case. He bulked up to try and emulate Nadal and that was biggest mistake he ever made as the injuries then came.
The ability to hit a big ball has nothing to do with uppet body muscle. Its to do with timing. Some players are born with excellent timing. I am a good example. I can hit FHs as hard as most pros. Problem is i cant keep it in often. But the power is there. Serve wise im about 110 mph and im 5ft 9. And i rarely absolutely whack the serve as i know ill miss.
Murray had the timing he should have stayed skinny.

110mph is whacking the serve for 99% of the people. You are having good fundamentals. Yeah, power is needed but don't be a Nadal. He is a freak or a doper. But he is an exception.

Same crap he started spouting when Fed turned 32 and then throughout his mid to late 30's...

He has never ever raised any age related concerns with Djokodal....Fed is the only one that gets hit with all the age related comments and questions

In most fields that matter (STEM fields and the like which help human progress), someone who is 65 (and the associated expertise and wisdom) is far better than someone who is 40.

Never liked Macca, loved his game but enjoyed Lendl FHs into his torso the most
It is a shame as I prefer his S&V over Lendl robotic style yet JMac off the court is
like Willy Wonka they both want to appear smart and superior to others.
The thing is Fed at 40 is like most people at 40 in another job

Why is it any of these people's business whether Fed retires or not?

Other than his surgeon and his closest team no one actually has a clue about what his body will be capable of. Maybe at the end of this process he'll be fit to win a CYGS, or maybe he'd struggle to take a set off a park player, who the hell knows?

If Federer wants to play and he's number 200 in the world who cares? Does it harm you? Does it harm anyone?

Not in sports, especially tennis. IMO, Roger would be foolish to risk more injuries playing ATP tennis. He has 20 slams, many weeks at #1, 5 YE at #1 and tons of money. No one can hold all the records, therefore, there is no sensible reason to continue to play and risk further injury.

The staggering stupidity of some people is mind boggling.

Australian Open 2020 photo shown below. Fed is 4 years older here than Djoker is now, incidentally. Look at this staggeringly fat pig with a “paunch.” Disgusting obesity level!
