Jump serve

Does anyone else jump before making contact with the ball? Kolschreiber is one pro who uses this motion and I find that my serves are a lot more effective when I do this. I'm talking about jumping before you even get in backscratch.

In volleyball, yes. Tennis, no.
Maybe my lack of height, but a good vertical leap, has something to do with why it's a more effective serve for me than my jumping into the ball serve because I can sure clear the net easier.

Nope. I get a little bit of air from the momentum when I'm swinging up (before snapping), but pretty much everyone does.

Although I have seen people do what you're doing, with great success. I forgot some pro's name, he did that. On a side note, I think he was a righty, tossed the ball with his right hand, switched rackets in midair, and smashed the ball at the top of his jump.

Apparently he could also get huge amounts of air in the picture I saw. I forgot his name, it was really cool though.

If it works for you, keep doing it.

how consistent is your serve? I tried this a while ago and I just couldn't get enough consistency to use it, I also found it a very tiring serve but on the plus side I could really pound the ball.

Jumping BEFORE you get into the backscratch position??
No way.
I come off the ground on every serve but it is always at the same time
my raquet is going up and forward FROM the backscratch postion. I am
only like 5-5/5-6 but this works best for me.
It's also what I teach my students.

If you have a hell of a toss, you should jump for it, if not don't.
When I played basketball, I had a pretty good vertical, around 30". I don't get up nearly that high on the serve, but it's around 15" and that gives me a better height to serve with.

Precisely. They (meaning my coach at the club) tell me not to jump if your toss is low, by doing this you're not generating any power. But if you have a good solid toss that's out in front so that when you hit it, you'll be thrusted into the court and ready to charge the net, then go ahead and jump and get some more height.

What part of NY do you live in? I'm in Queens, but I play in Nassau county. I've already met king bugsy. Like to get some sets in?

I actually don't live in the city. I live more or less in the capitol. The reason why I know so much about the city is because I'm always there, friends appartments, shopping, concerts, etc etc and more than likely I'll be going to college there too. I'll give you a call when I get my acceptance letter from Columbia U. ;)

That was incredibly cocky and for that, I probably wont get in. Forgive me.

EDIT: I used to play basketball too before I completely EFFED my finger like 3 times. I pretty much blame bball for the reason I jump around the court so much.

Good luck with Columbia and I'm sure you'll make it there. Uptown's a cool place to hang (Morningside Heights). Next time you're in NYC, let me know and I'll show you some cool tennis courts.

Yeah the city has a lot of great tennis facilities. NYU's are on the roof! Can't wait to check out the local tennis hang-outs. It'll give me a good reason to go shopping and get some new cute tennis stuff.
