Just ban clay

Clay is fine if the other surfaces are fast. But with everything being slowed down, clay has no point anymore. There's no pint construction going on, those who bother to do so and try to finish points just watch their winners being returned as its too slow.

The only tactic is to grind, wait for errors, or wait for a loose ball. Clay court matches are uniformly the most boring as far as tennis quality goes.

+1

Came to write nearly identical comments.

If we had true variety of court speeds with hardcourts being fast as they used to be (and indoor carpet) then the entire field would be different. If the field is different, then the clay court matches would be different.

This is a ridiculous thread. Clay is legitimate as any other surface. Clay is needed for variety and I say this as a guy who prefers hard courts and grass over clay court tennis.

It should have been like this

AO medium fast HC like Reebound Ace
RG slow clay
Wimbledon lightning fast grass of 90s
US open fast hard courts like in the 90s
WTF Carpet

Clay used to have a place because it was a slow surface, and stood for point construction, defense and a different style of play.

But nowadays all surfaces are slow. All clay does is punish any attacker and reward endless grinding with zero variety.

It's the same style of play you see now at AO, except at FO it's slower. More grinding and truly no variety.

This whole situation came about because the clay court specialists started whining about any surface with speed, boycotting Wimbledon, and starting the myth tha fast courts damage players.

They don't play the same. Nadal hasn't won non clay title for almost 3 years before Indian wells and he always dominated clay.

And clay is fun. The only thing boring about clay is that Nadal dominates too much, so it's not as exciting to watch maybe, because you know the result in advance. But Djokovic match was exciting. Without time wasting it was an epic match.

But good idea would be to speed up some surfaces, for variety and also for shorter points, preserving player bodies.

thank god someone invented hard courts

The same guy has a new court design coming soon to the tour. The top coat is sandpaper with shrapnel and glass ground in for extra roughness. It's called the bodybuster™

HC is the worst invention ever for professional players.

You fed****s are worse than your nadal**** rivals. Ban clay? I don't see you calling for banning grass since no-one plays it anymore and Federer has won it seven times.

Remember, in Federer fringe-land, only Nadal is a problem, and as you point out, no one was talking about banning grass when Federer won his Wimbledon titles. Naaahh, it is only a problem the moment Nadal was celebrated for his record FO victory which moves him one major closer to the false god Federer, and Nadal's apparent dominant level of play. Oh, NOW its time to ban clay.

Yes, you are correct: the burning asshurt of the TT Federer fringe is off the charts.

I don't really see how defending and moonballing until the opponent errs is confused for "point construction" by some people.

Noone is happy with anything. People complained back in the days when there was much more surface variety. Now people complain that there is no variety. I don't really care tbh. Most of these players are a product of the way the surfaces are now.

I just like a good tennis match. Quality is quality depsite playing surfaces.

This is true. People complain about S&V's boringness.. when the match is all-serve.

But take that away and they complain about no creativity, no winners, matches going too long.

The bottom line is that there is NOTHING anyone can possibly do to the sport to make 100% of their fans like it. NOTHING!

So with that in mind all they can do is make it so that they make the most money off it. And surface homogenization has achieved that.

And while Federer fans and 90's tennis fans may hate it.. I'm pretty sure that it has both helped federer... and helped tennis popularity overall (in the SHORT TERM).

In the long term it's hard to foster new tennis fans because no one wants to watch a 5 hour match? What other sport requires its fans to sit there that long? Not to mention how bad it is for TV.

I think back then the problem people had was tennis was not covered as extensively as it is now. Back then I rarely saw the French and AusO through the week, The USO and Winmby were the prime and the most televised. They were coincidentally the fastest surfaces and alot of sv and 3 stroke rallies happened. Now you get to see all the tennis, and it is blatantly obvious that most tournies play too similar, now their is a big cry for more grass, less clay (season) and faster hard court along with indoor carpet. It used ti be nice to get o see the clay mixed into the season, now that type of tennis is all you see. Their are currently no true sv players.

I thought people don't S&V because of the surfaces

Even in the 1990s, players like Sampras and Becker would stay back on hardcourts. It's amusing how some people seem to think that the 1990s was nothing but a serve and volley craze. The biggest reason for the decline of serve and volley is the superior racquet and string technology that makes it not only easier to get the ball back, but to get the ball back deeper into the court, and with authority.

Not a single Rafa supporters complained about grass when Fed won his 7th Wimby last year. You Fed worshippers should learn from us. You're tired of clay becoz the "wrong" guy (for you ) owns it lol. Don't like it then don't watch it, as simple as that. Constantly whining about it won't change ****.

Are you forgetting the roof thread by suresh :)

How about banning the baseline ? Have the court end at the service line. Then there will be only S&V :D

For what? Dubs indoors, yea not much difference playing in those parameters, nobody hitting wood with gut from the baseline the same as a pro staff 90/95, or a Bab 100 in APD, or Roddick model.... Hey, you sick buddy? maybe post after high fever and delusions are gone.

I am not saying I am using wood and gut.

I am talking about racquets and strings from 15-20 years ago.
