The last full game he played, he could only slice his backhand. He had no chance to win that match and was correct to retire. It was absolutely no surprise that he was going to retire based on the sequence of events prior to that point.

I'm not the biggest Krygios fan, but the crowd treated him very poorly - differently from when other popular players retire where there may be an initial boo or negative reaction but then they realize the guy is hurt and subsequently cheer and give applause. The crowd in Acapulco booed him off the court - very classless.

That is not how it works: they think of the Spanish speaking players as closer to them and the Spanish speaking nations have a penchant for taking the Spanish speaking players as their "homeboys" especially if they play against players from other language provenance. Only deeply rooted conflicts from various origin can cause disruption in that general trend. That doesn't mean that there won't be people that will root for other players or will have other favourites, but on average there will be a lot more supporters for the said "homeboys" than for anyone else, unless his name is, say, Federer, in which case all bets are off.

So does Guillermo del Toro or Gael Garcia Bernal not “appear” Mexican? There are loads of European descendant Mexicans in more affluent/metropolitan parts of the country like Mexico City and Monterray. As an American, it was a shock to my personal stereotypes when I first ran into a group of middle class kids from Mexico City on spring break in Cozumel; looked like any group of teenagers from Madrid.
