The Laver Cup will become tennis' version of the Ryder Cup from golf. It's a different kind of pressure to the majors too, the sort that Colin Montgomerie thrived in and the sort that Tiger Woods didn't like. In future, we might see guys like Murray, Djokovic, Wawrinka, Nishikori, del Potro, Raonic as well.

If nearly all of the ones you mentioned weren't out with injury they all would have participated.

Berdych was gonna play no matter what with it being Prague (andn unfortunately for him he lost every match he played). But we would have seen Murray-Nole and Fed-Rafa play doubles this weekend. Would have been crazy!

It's amazing to think this event could be even more spectacular. Because of the region system, the teams could have been even more incredible with big choices of players. Hopefully we get one appearance from Stanimal at Laver Cup one year

It's possible that even during Juan Martin Del Potro's birthdays everyone at the party was watching this on television instead of talking with Juan Martin (hopefully not).

I think its a good thing, because the team format allows a platform for some players to build confidence, and play better. It bypasses the ATP politics, and alleviates some of the pressure about worrying about the point system. It also is a big payday, making it more important to players.

In the past, life on the tour wasn't always about ATP points, and grinding day in and out to make sure you stay on top. If you're a good guy, dedicated to the game, and one of the best players in the world, you could get a bit of special treatment without having to be cutthroat at all times, cutting down new players before they have a chance to establish themselves. So having a tournament that's more about competition, teamwork, and building relationships between players and sponsors is probably a great thing for the players, new and old alike. The ATP exists for a reason, but its not the end all be all of competition, and sports. It has its drawbacks.

Having tournaments like this once in a while will improve the health of the pro tour, bringing in money, providing a stage for younger players to establish themselves, and keeps the history of the game intact and important. It improves upon other non-ATP tournament formats, in that they keep the competitive spirit alive, which I feel is the most important factor of all.

Fed took what he liked from events like the Kooyong Classic, Davis cup, Hopman Cup, and iptl and put them in the Laver cup and added a few extra things.

Anyone know what the financial incentive was for the players to play in the Laver cup? I would imagine that they would be very well payed for them to play in this event in between atp events.

According to http://www.**************.org/tenni...eal-appearance-fees-for-exhibitions-revealed/ and a few other sources, two million for Federer.

On the internet commenters seem to be saying either 2 million or 2.5 million for Nadal but I for the life of me can't find a source for that number, so I don't know if it's true.

Can't find anything about the amounts paid to the other players, but it's got to be significantly less.
