Luxilon Natural Guts vs. Luxilon 4G Rough

How accurate is the ratings on the back of the package? For example:

Luxilon NG:
Durability: 8, Power: 10, Control: 9, Comfort: 10

Luxilon 4G Rough:
Durability: 8, Power: 9, Control: 9, Comfort: 9.5

4G Rough is $7.47USD while Luxilon NG is $22.47USD and the differences are not that much, if I read it correctly. In other words, Luxilon NG costs three times more than 4G Rough. I am trying to justify of recent purchased of 45 sets of Luxilon NG.

Any comments? TIA

Poly versus natural gut is comparing apples and oranges!

Do you have any experience with poly strings versus natural gut strings? (have you hit with each as a full bed?)

1.25 4G rough is definitely not 9.5 comfort at stiffness of 216 !?! Compare to 1.25 nat gut which is stiffness of 82.

The power is also quite different between the two.

Tension loss/maintenance is also quite different.

Try the strings in the same frame, strung at the same tension and you'll see what I mean...

Yes I have and I can not tell the differences between full bed poly and NG. I am not a UTR 10+ player so I don't think I can qualify as experts here.

Both my daughter and son have played with both full bed poly and NG. My daughter prefers NG but my son does not care. Daughter UTR is 10 and Son UTR is about 11.5.

Yes, I have a tension meter and I can tell full NG retains tension well even after 1 month of the string job. Then again, I have my own string machine, P7000, and my kids break strings every week so I do not have to worry about tension loss.

I am just curious about the rating in the back of the bag. The rating is very similar between poly and NG, like what I posted above, right off the bag:

Luxilon NG:
Durability: 8, Power: 10, Control: 9, Comfort: 10

Luxilon 4G Rough:
Durability: 8, Power: 9, Control: 9, Comfort: 9.5

The reason I go with NG is because I've done research and it said that NG will not cause arm problems in the long run.

Forget the back of the bag. Here is a more accurate reading for you

Luxilon NG:
Durability: 8, Power: 10, Control: 8, Comfort: 10

Luxilon 4G Rough:
Durability: 10, Power: 5, Control: 10, Comfort: 5

Ok, yes, takes a certain level player (maybe 4.0 NTRP?) to be able to tell the difference between nat gut and poly (besides on the elbow, that is usually obvious even at low levels). My wife is a beginner player and can't tell any difference in spin or control, for example, between gut, multi, and poly.

But poly and nat gut are about as far apart on the string spectrum as you can get, especially Lux 4G/4G rough which is a stiff poly!

I have some follow-up question between and Luxilon NG and Luxilon 4G rough.

- Since Lux NG has a power rating of 10 and Lux 4G rough has a power rating of 5, does it mean it can generate a lot more power on the swing and less spin with Lux NG? Does that I mean I need to string Lux NG a bit higher tension than with Lux 4G Rough to compensate for the power of Lux NG?

- If I play with full bed Lux NG, does it mean I need to modify my swing a little bit to compensate the power that comes with Lux NG? For example, for someone who already has plenty of power, does it mean I need to "brush" the ball even more to keep it inside the baseline?

TIA

Full gut and poly play nothing alike.

Yes, you’ll need to adjust your swing somewhat because the difference in spin generation will be noticeable.

@Doubles

Thank you for your advise. My son normally hit the ball quite flat and he has a lot of power, very strong kid. Does it mean that he will need to adjust his swing and brush more on the swing in order to generate the spin so that the ball will land inside the baseline. How much adjustment are we talking about here?

Thanks again.

Lux NG needs to be strung much tighter...but no you don't need to adjust your swing if you string it at the correct tension. Start with 60 and go from there.

Like the poster above me said, you can string quite tight and likely not have to make major adjustments. If they don't like the feeling of gut at 60, then making an effort to incorporate a little more brush on the ball will fix that problem.
