Mark my words: Carlos Alcaraz is the next ATG (Technical Analysis)

GoldenSwing

Rookie
Forehand
- Is a straight arm swing combo of Federer and Nadal's.
- Uses Federer's stance
- Uses Nadal's swing and lasso whip occasionally
- Compared to next gen he uses the "Modern" takeback which is more flexible in a variety of situations (All of the big 3 use this takeback)

Backhand
- Primarily uses the closed stance very similar to Djokovic
- Takeback and closing of racquet are also similar to Novak
- One of the few players who can do a open stance sliding backhand on any surface
- Backhand slice seems okay at the moment, but it is a great defensive shot

Net Play and Variety
- Not hesitant in coming to the net to end points or mix up rallies
- Has a great drop shot for a player his age
- Volleys can still use work, but this is a never ending process for a tennis player. I already consider him a better volleyer than Med or Zverev

Movement/Athleticism
- Tenacious and explosive movement, as I noted earlier, he can slide on all surfaces
- Can defend well, lateral movement is phenomenal
- Upwards movement is also solid
- Will have to watch his movement for possible injuries with emphasis on flexibility/mobility training as to not derail his career

His biggest weakness is his serve. Doesn't score a lot of aces with it, nor does he place it well. A player of his height should consider switching to a platform serve for more control. All sub 6-footers who have had a great serve mainly use a platform (Sampras, Fed, Djokovic).

Shot selection can also use work. There's a time and place to blast a shot/end a rally. I predict he will improve significantly in this department however. This will boost his consistency.

Minimum: 5-6 Grandslams. The sky is the limit for this guy if he has proper coaching, works even more on his mental game (already solid imo), and is motivated. What I am saying is that he is a combination of all of the big three. It seems a bit poetic to use them as a comparison metric, but his form is really similar to them if you watch him play.

This is more of a scouting report on his technical abilities which are GRADE A.

He's the highest ranked 18 year old, had a great QF run at the USO, good mental game, and has more top 10 slam wins than Zverev.

So much to be excited about, but I agree that it's too early to call. Wouldn't be surprised if he was one to do it though!

The more you watch him the more you get impressed. If he doesn't win multiple Slams or becomes #1 - I will be shocked.

Extremely accurate analysis for the most part, especially about his mental fortitude. I hugely appreciate it.

Save for one hilarious statement though, Since when did federer Djokovic sampras became sub 6 footers? (Highlighted)

Love his game and mentality. I think we all saw what you saw at the US Open: he has all the shots off both wings. Likely will have a top 5 FH on tour for the majority of his career. His BH DTL is fearless too.

I watched him in person in Winston Salem a month ago and his ball just sounds different off the racket.

The serve though scares me quite a bit. He works so hard on his own service games right now. And unlike a Sinner or FAA who are 6’4”, Alcaraz is at a physical disadvantage with nature. It’s going to take quite a while to upgrade it. No ‘easy’ fix in his form from what I can see.

I do love that he already has the Umag 250 title - some players never get that monkey off their back. He’s a winner and JC Ferrero is a perfect mentor and coach for him. Sky is the limit but let’s exercise some caution as the serve will still be an issue for a few years at least.

What? Alcaraz, and all of the players you mentioned here, are over 6 foot

Carlos is definitely amazing and may well go on to do huge things. However, I'm worried about him becoming another Glassikori

I said it already last year. This kid has the potential to dominate the tour if he continues on the right path.
