Medvedev: "Korda is like Novak"

Interesting presser from Med and his thoughts on their games. He says its very hard to play like that.

“The most difficult thing is that he hits the ball very strong. Probably one of the strongest hitters,” Medvedev said. “Also takes [the ball] very early. There are some other guys playing like this, but they miss more than him. And he didn't miss that much.

“His game is kind of different from everybody because he’s very aggressive and takes the ball very early. A little bit maybe like Novak. Not every player is capable of doing that, it's all beautiful and that but if I do it I would be ranked #700 in the world".

I ALSO am a little bit like Novak! Many people they say this. We both have the arms and legs and play tennis magnificent.

But he can have the money and the trophy things. I have the pigs and all the women in the village like a man with pigs who is NOT the vegetarien. This sought of man they think likes men.

Korda is like early Novak, with much better serve, weaker FH, BH, and sooooo much better volleying. But early Novak had such bad serve trainings, so I think if he had Becker like coach from beginning of his career, maybe his volleys would have been much better. Sooo, they are not that similar

He reminds me a bit of Safin, his idol. More consistent off the forehand, worse off the backhand (it’s still very good, but Safin is Safin). Beautiful technique.

I miss the old days when the draws would come out with Federer and Nadal on opposite sides and everyone would be anticipating whose side of the draw is Djokovic on!
Back then, people were excited even for the Masters which have become an afterthought today.

Medvedev is a ******** and is just trying to claim the charming and loveable Korda for the fan base. Like they tried and failed with Charles.

Like Novak in that he takes the ball early and hits cleanly. You can make the comparison in that term but he never said he’s like Novak in relation to his movement, mental toughness, return of serve, etc.

Korda is an exceptional talent who had injuries. The board here takes the interview out of context. Again

I mean he used the Novak tactics to beat Med, taking it early, used the short slice more than the dropper, but close enough. Doing it once, as impressive as doing it in bo5 is, is still not the same as being able to do it again and again, which is what separates the best from the rest. Looking forward to seeing how he performs next round.

You re kidding right?
Safin was number one at the age of 20 or 21 and he already had a GS to his name.
Korda is good no doubt, but Safin would have swept the floor with him

I watched only replays. Korda changes the direction of the balls almost effortlessly!

Med sounds like a nice guy!

Fedal fans jealous I see.Blind to the fact that new generation of players despite not being popular to admit publicly, study&trying to emulate basics of Novak’s game.Weak BH are less and less on top of the game, game is more balanced from both FH&BH side.Everyone wants to slide like Novak

No s... Sherlock. What a surprise that everyone wants to be as flexible as Novak or Dimitrov or Swiatek.

When did I say Korda would’ve beaten peak Safin lol. I’m saying his strokes remind me of Safin’s and he says he patterned his game after Safin’s, so it makes sense.

So many ppl take comparisons too silly. Tennis is a game of strategy , tactics, and mental strength.

Like sinner for example. His effortless casual loose ground strokes remind me of Federer how he just casually crushes the ball with effortless power. However mentally , and consistently he will never have the shot creation of Federer

I’d say Chung Hyeon looked pretty close in AO18, when he beat the player he modeled his game after.
Chung beat an elbow-injured 14-seeded Djokovic! Another year and a half later, surgery-repaired Djokovic returned to #1, and hasn't lost at AO ever since.

I’m comparing playing styles, ie at the time, he is the only player I’ve seen that could move as well - and similarly as Novak, f.inst doing deep splits, on the run, hitting the ball cleanly, in a stable position, for a winning cross, dipping passing shot.

One guy’s won 21 GS, the other none, so it’s not about a comparison of who was the best player at the time, but he had the results to back up the efficiency of his playing style. Besides Djokovic, who was playing solid tennis regardless of the nature of his injuries, Chung also beat Zverev, Medvedev - and could well have beaten Fed if he didn’t get those blisters on his feet.

Not the serve, though. Volley-wise they are both great.

Do you really mean that? I could never see such similarity.
This point f.inst.:

There are quite a few passing shots, done out wide, in a super stretched position, which is, imo, Novak's biggest asset compared to all other players. Sure players like de Minaur and Moutet are super fast, but they're not able to hit strong returns, when sliding out wide, because they don't have the same core strength (in the abdomen/lower torso region) as Novak has - and Chung had.

The way Chung whips over some of those FH passing shots, from a deep sliding split, whilst having total upper body control and strength, is amazing, and something only Novak can do on consistently as far as I have seen, among the top players at least.
