Most rediculous comeback

I was playing a match, and the score was 6-1, 5-0. I had just won 11 games in a row after my opponent won the first game.

Then next thing I know the 2nd set score is 5-4, but I now have two match-points. I blow both of them and end up losing the set 5-7. Then I lose the match in a 10-point tiebreaker in leu of 3rd set.

There was only two match points for me the whole time; I was getting creamed during my opponent's comeback. How the hell can someone lose when they are up 6-1, 5-0??? I could not believe what had just happened to me.

Any similar stories?

It's frustrating if you can not close the match. I did have some stories of a comeback from I though was lost match already. Thinking that I'm loosing the match already, I started to swing as if nothing to loose play the risk instead of being conservative then you suddenly realize that everything falls in and the scores are inching slowly.

i came back from 2-5 to win a set. Playing with an overweight guy last month (a pusher who slices every ball). i kept giving him the ball where he was standing cos he cant run much. he had me running all over the place!
Finally, i began began playing a bit more carefully
and became a bit of a pusher myself.
that got me back to 6-5, but i double faulted to 6-6. then won the set in tiebreak.

oh btw, sometimes in GS's i have noticed that after winning one, often first 2 sets, the person in lead starts taking it easy, or becomes too overconfident. he starts losing in the third set. and once he starts losing, it appears as though he loses confidence big time, loses belief in himself or something. and then he loses next 2 sets.

i also remember how in Wimbledon, bartoli lost first set to Henin. the commntator said that Henin's just having a practice session. then next set it looked like bartoli was making her run all over the place. and then you know how it ended!

I was down 0:5 in the third set and my opponent was serving at 40:0, three matchpoints for him. However, I won the set - and the match - 7:5. Unbelieveable...

Back in high school I was playing against one of my varsity teammates in a local tournament. I actually used to hit with him all the time and had never even come close to losing to him before. It should have been an easy match for me...

I got up 6-0, 5-0, 30-15, my serve... and proceded to lose 9 games in a row and the match. It was a nightmare. And he started getting friggin everything back and was pumping himself up after every point. Picture a scrawny Lleyton Hewitt with a girly voice and that was him. I started playing more and more tentatively and he started coming up with ridiculous shots out of nowhere. It was insane. I uttered so many profanities during the course of his come back that my parents left the match and went home, not wanting to be seen with me. The final score was 6-0, 5-7, 5-7.

Noskillz I know what thats like

This kid I was playing last year was pretty damn good. He had a huge serve probably the biggest I've returned in my life. I lost the first set 4-6 maybe 6-2 I can't remember. Then I won the second either 7-5 or 7-6 up 5-0 in the third about to win nobody thought I was gonna win this match at the beginning. Lost 7 straight games to lose 7-5. I was crushed! I'm over it now though, I played well, probably the best in my whole high school freshmen season. Good experience for my sophmore year coming up.

When I pictured Lleyton with a girly voice I lol'd, I've played many players like that.

Well, I was playing doubles with my friends and we were up 5-0 in the first set, then my friends came back from that and my partner and I ended up losing the set 5-7 and then the match.

I'm just recalling a match where a friend in a dubs match was leading 6-1, 5-0, 40-0, when his partner had a brain fart...they ended up losing 13 straight games, losing the final 2 sets 7-5, 6-0. Shocking.

Lost a first set 6-2, down 5-1 in second set and win it 7-5. Third set I was up 5-2 and won 7-6. Was the worst I have ever played and won. Actually felt bad for the guy who lost.

Just this week: I was down 0-4 in the first. I came back, and served to tie the set a 5-5. I even had two game points, but he ended up breaking me and taking the first set, 6-4. I then won the second set 6-0, and the match tiebreak, 10-3.

In 2003 I was running the Northern Illinois District Qualifier and in addition to running the tournament I was also the on site director for the Boy's 12 and 14 divisions. In the first round of a Boy's 12 match Hunter Adams was leading Sam Duffield 6-0, 5-0 40-Love. Literally the farthest down one could get. Sam never gave up. Rather than run through the amazing next 2 1/2 hours with all the details, here is a link to see the final result:

If I hadn't witnessed it, I never would have never believed what transpired had someone told me what happened. Sam wins the next seven games holding off a total of ten match points along the way. In the third set Ryan jumps out to a 5-2 lead. Sam fights back to 5-5 and holds off three more match points along the way. Ryan goes up 6-5 and gets another match point and loses it and the game. 6-6. In the third set tiebreaker Ryan leads 6-3, three more match points. Sam wins the next four point and goes up 7-6. Ryan wins the next point to make it 7-7. Final two points go to Sam. Sam wins 0-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7). To his credit Ryan was very hurt and naturally devistated, but he shook Sam's hand and congratulated him on winning such tough match. I had tears in my eyes for Ryan.

I came back from down 2-4 in the 3rd in a league match. I really thought it was over after I got broken, but following that the guy I was playing tired quite quickly.

I have a penchant for losing first sets, and winning close sets, and then either winning in the 3rd or losing in another close set.

And then I beat a guy 6-0 6-0 in a league match... ???

I won the 1st set 7-6 (7-3), I was up in the second set 5-3, had 3 match points in game, had a match point at 5-4. Was up 3-0 in tie break, and blew it 6-7 (7-9). Lost the last set 4-6. Probably not a very big comeback but this was the last match I played and I can't believe I lost 4 match points and couldn't win in tie break when I was up early.

just the other day i was trashing my oponent with 4 ace games and giving him a 6-0 6-0 when out of the blue he makes a 6-1 for the 3rd set with me making 2 double faults and shooting moon balls (they were really going to the moon)

I was playing a practice match, just an 8-game pro set. Up 6-2 and a break point....lost all but one game from then on. That was 20 years ago in college against a close friend/teammate. So ridiculous I remember it to this day.

An away match against a nationally ranked opponent. I was down a 6-4, 6-5 and match point on my serve. Returned an overhead behind my back for a lob winner then served two aces. Took the breaker and the guy just folded in the 3rd. One totally lucky shot turned it all around. Then about ten minutes later, demoralized, he pulled out of the dubs. This was back when dubs was played after the singles matches.

In a national jr tournament, I was up against a guy who ended up playing in a few Slams and tour events (not just Satellites and Challengers). I started off with four aces and then broke the guy. Over the next two hours, I ended up losing every single one of the ensuing twelve games.

Manuel Orantes over Guillermo Vilas, SF of the 1975 US Open.
Andre Agassi over Andrei Medvedev, Roland Garros final, 1999.
Guga Kuerten over Mike Russell, early rd at Roland Garros. Draws a heart on the court at the end of the match and after winning the tournament.

I have been able to overcome being down 2-5 in the second after losing the first set a few times. This past weekend in a doubles match the opponents came back on us after we had them 5-2 in the first; we ended up winning the second, but lost the match in the third set super-tiebreak (USTA timed match rules...). I find comebacks to be one of the most fun aspects of tennis. It's kind of like the "bad beat" in poker - it's the worst feeling in the world if you are on the losing end, but you feel like superman if you can pull it off.

During a rapid tournament we are split into 4 groups with two getting into the quarterfinals from each group i have this guy leading 5-0 serving at 40-15.. i ended up winning 7-6. then in the final i meet this same guy, he leads 5-0 serving at 40-0... i ended up winning 7-6. he does not like to see me since.

i've lost after being up 6-2 5-1 before. i've since gotten mentally stronger. you just cant choke, cant get distracted. you have to calm down and almost ignore the score.

btw, not trying to be a dick, but its ridiculous that 90% of people spell it "rediculous"

When I'm down in a set or I have a lead in the set, it seems like I go for shots a lot more, so maybe that's why I can come back. I play too conservatively when I'm tied with the opponent.

i came back from a 0-6 0-3 match which i later won because the guy was really good but he just wasn't that physically fit and lost his serve which i pounded back and his groundstroke had almost zero power and he wouldn't even run to the net for volleys or short balls so i pretty much played to his weaknesses...won 0-6, 6-3, 6-1

Losing the first set badly. Still not picking up our game up in the middle of the second set. I take a fall and hurt my elbow and knee. Continue to play and win the second set. Win the third set. Thanks to my partner who kept saying "you can do it". :D

Comeback

I was playing in a mixed doubles league match and my partner and I were down 0-6 in the 3rd set tie-breaker and we came back to win. I believe we won 9-7 in the tie-break. It was a very satisfying win since we had to save 6 match points in a row!!! The final match score was 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (9-7).

This happened in a doubles match in the local park. We completely bombed the fisrt set 1-6. Second set was 2-5 30-40, match point for our opponents. We fought hard to save the matchpoint and eventually the set. This gave us a confidence boost and we went on to win the third set 6-2. 2 hours after the match, we still could not believe our victory. Great stuff.
