Murray didn't play best tennis at USO 2012.

i agree that he played better at the Olympics, I don't think i have seen him play that well from the start of the match all the way to the end usually he starts off well then makes a few mistakes and becomes severely negative and it effects how he plays for the remainder of that match. Hopefully this can give him the confidence going into the grand slams next year as that mental block is gone

I felt a lot of the fun was taken out of what was probably the biggest British sporting achievement ever.
If he'd won the first, for instance, it would be a fresh young exciting player winning the slam ala DelPotro style.
If he'd won Wimbledon it would have been party time like the Olympics.
The feeling at USO 2012, though, was more of sheer relief and disbelief.
It was almost too much of a shock to take in.
Murray you could see was in shock. People who have followed him over the years were in shock.
When that last historic point was won, my girlfriend asked what the hell was wrong with me just sitting staring? He's done it.
This is the moment a whole nation has been waiting 76 years for.
I feel cheated somehow.

He played smart rather than hard he used the wind to his advantage pushed the ball back and waited for the error like nadal does with his opponents, he rarely hits winners just feeds off his opponents UE's

Hey. Let's all go out there and win some slams then.
I like your sarcasm.

It's a form of cheating really. The ATP should test him or ban him or something.

A silent ban for the Muzzette I say!

I think I had the same reaction too but mainly because it was like 2AM, I don't think I really took it in, i don't think the nation did either. Do you think he'll get that BBC Sports award i can't think of the name but other athletes including olympians will most definitely be nominated as well. Anyway its been a great year for British Sport.

Nadal won't beat Murray on hardcourts again. USO 2011 was the last time and it only happened because Murry was completely exhausted after the 4 hour Isner match the day before. Murray's USO 2011 campaign was ruined from bad scheduling. Nadal simply took out the pieces. Murray now is going to be a threat to everybody everywhere. Murray's going to smash Nadal at the AO in 2013 if they get drawn. It's going to be a bigger humiliation than even their 2010 AO match where Murray crushed Nadal in straights and made him quit.

What has nadal got to do with this thread?

I think he played better in the Wimbledon final than the USO final too.

But that could be because of the wind.

I'd settle for Murray not playing well in any slams ever again if it means winning more GS. Winning is more important and playing well is just a bonus.

Can people stop making excuses about the wind? Berdych and Novak played in the same conditions as Murray and it's up to them to adapt to the conditions.

I agree that he didn't particularly play his best tennis at the USO which makes it all the more remarkable that it was still good enough to carry him over the finishing line IMO. You wonder what would have happened if he HAD played his best tennis?

I like this quote: "At the US Open I didn't feel like I played that well," Murray said. Obviously the conditions didn't help. But I played smart tennis. It wasn't always easy to serve well or to hit the ball cleanly from the back of the court, but I found a way to win the matches, even when I wasn't playing well. And that's something that was so important."

Note how he thinks the windy conditions were a factor in why he didn't always play his best tennis! It wasn't just Berdych or Djokovic who suffered because of the adverse weather! It wasn't an aid in helping him win as some people on here like to think. It was an obstacle he had to overcome and win in spite of!

Nobody seriously thinks that Mainad.
He straight setted both Djokovc and Federer in succession at the Olympics without wind.
At the USO he straight setted the very dangerous Raonic without wind.
And he was equally hampered when the wind was a factor in other matches.
And he made the final of Wimbledon without wind.

He also struggled with the heat more than usual during the daytime matches in week one, presumably because he was preparing for/at the Olympics when he'd normally be training in Miami.

He struggled with heat/humidity but won his matches, then struggled with the wind, and won those matches too. It made for a scrappy progression through the tournament, but underlines why winning a slam is about more than being in good form for a few matches.

Re-read his post. Mainad was agreeing with you. I do too, Murray should add another slam in 2013. Hopefully Wimbledon, but could well be the AO or another US.

I felt the same, I couldn't believe how flat I felt when Novak hit that forehand long and Murray finally won. I think it had to sink in for me, as I felt a lot happier for him in the days that followed.

For me, it was the fact the match was so close and tense that when the end came, and the guy I'd been cheering for had won, it sunk I wouldn't be seeing any of the $2m prize money or endorsement cash.

True, he did lose in doubles and mixed.

Even in singles he wasn't unbetable. At most he played as well as he did at Wimbledon (IMO he was better in better shape and Wimbledon) but faced a subpar Federer this time instead of a GOATing one, Djokovic on the other hand played well below his standards in the semi-finals.

Agree with this.
He was practically unbeatable at the Olympics but more resilient at the US.
Still obviously had to play to a very high level but combined with a lot of intelligent play and the spillage of much blood and guts.

Sorry, man but other guys didn't or couldn't play their BEST tennis either. That wind was so crazy in that weekend and on monday. but Murray played better in the wind than the other guys. so he Won.

Why are you sorry Nostradamus? No-one claimed everyone else played their best. Mainly people have been acting as if only the other players were hampered, when actually it was all of them. Although in this interview Andy wasn't just talking about the windy matches, but about his level during the whole competition.

It seemed obvious to me that he didn't play to the same standard he had at the Olympics, but as you say, in each match, he managed to play better than his opponent, which is what was required. He's making the point that playing amazingly great tennis and winning matches are not always the same thing.
