I'm just devastated beyond words!!!!!

He will evolve into a great commentator and still be part of tennis. That's small consolation now, but he will always be involved in the game.

Sure sounds more like he isnt even going to make Wimbledon but if he could that would be the last event

unfortunately he is not able to control how he wants to end his career since he is ending it due to injury, i hope at the very least he can end it where he wants to. i almost feel like there is no point to playing AO and then he can just rest up, play wimbledon and hang it up

Yeah there is almost no chance he is making it out of the first round in Melbourne

Almost seems ridiculous to play it at this point

Although very sad to see him go, he has achieved the impossible and he had reached the pinnacle of the sport. and he will be remembered as best Tennis player England has ever seen and they will erect Monument and Statues of him. So he should have no regrets...

Besides now he can explore that professional Gaming world and if he is really as good as he saids he is, he will actually make more money in that than at tennis.

Have a week without posting on here as a kind of minute silence for Murray's career.

This is not the way you want any athlete to finish his or her career. Really sad news. :(

Glad that I saw Murray in action once before he decided to retire. Congratulations to him on all of his achievements, and I wish him good health and success in whatever he decides to do in the future.

Probably doesn't make people feel better but some perspective here are retirement ages for all-time players:

McEnroe-33, technically retired at 35 but played his last major matches at 33
Wilander-31, shortly before his 32nd
Becker-31, pretty much was inactive for 2 years then came back to play Wimbledon one last time, so effectively at 29
Edberg-30
Courier-29, last tournament in Miami before his 30th
Rafter-29, similar to Murray he was only a few years removed from top level and did reach Wimbledon Final and Canada-Cincinnati Finals his last season

Of course Borg we know didn't retire due to body.

This is the BEST thing for Andy Murray. Stop being selfish just cause you want to see him play. Andy should stop playing this month. Do not play til Wimbledon. That is the BEST thing for Andy and his well being. We only want the best for Andy Murray.

Sad that we are losing him.

But in the long run I think it is better for Murray. He has an entire life outside tennis to look forward to, including raising a kid. He doesn't want his kid to see him in a wheelchair.

Man Britain getting hit hard

How many significant worldwide athletes are they down to? Rory McIlroy, Anthony Joshua, Lewis Hamilton

And?????

When he mentioned last week that he still feels some pain in his hip (even a year after surgery and very limited match play) it became pretty clear that he would never make a full recovery.

I said if he was smart, he'd stop pushing it and making 2018 a farewell tour. Looks like that's exactly what's happening.

Yes Andy was only crying because his hip was uncomfortable in that cheap Aussie chair.

I want the best for you Nostie, Andy is doing ok, he still has his hotels and contracts. The break will do you good.

This was a remarkable press conference because it revealed a few surprising things, and also some things that aren't being accurately reported.

* Murray didn't say he'd retire at Wimbledon. He said it's distinctly possible that this AO is his last tournament (5:20).
* He revealed he's been playing with hip pain for 'a number of years' prior to the 2016 time frame (9:48). This might help explain certain losses he's suffered in big matches where he might have been either favoured or on even ground with his opponent (that's my view, not something he said).
* He said he's seriously considering having his hip resurfaced, and didn't rule out the possibility that he might be able to come back and play afterwards (6:23).

My favorite of the big four player by far. He contributed so much to this current era - the best era in men's tennis. Not interested in image and never afraid to be himself. Great game and work ethic. So unfair that he couldn't retire on his own terms instead of being forced to by injury. I wish him the best for the future whatever he decides to do next.

Shocked and saddened. I still can't believe it, keep thinking it's some kind of bad joke, but it's backed up by multiple media sources. I feel gutted for Mainad and all of Andy's fans.
I had the same reaction when I saw the headline and read this. Actually searched it up in several places. This is a shock. I hope that his injury does not end up being so bad it affects his non tennis life.

And he will always be remembered more fondly for having to exit prematurely, as opposed to sticking around too long. Small consolation for someone who will be watching the Big 3 win Slams for the next 5 years, but there it is.

Sad, but we knew it was coming. When my non-TTW friends would ask me about him I'd always say "I think he's done", and they would always react incredulously.

I shouldn't be surprised given his age and how much he's struggled the last couple years since becoming #1, but the realization that the illustrious Big 4 will lose a member just hit me like a rock. Murray has been a fixture at the top of the rankings as long as I've watched tennis. He is an all-time great in his own right, having checked all the big boxes in his resume.
This will be the biggest retirement since Agassi in 2006.

I honestly didn’t see this coming..:( 1 of my all time favs to watch growing up. 1st watched him back in ‘06 when he defeated Fed, but didn’t take interest till ‘08. 1 of the smartest players ever & overall a great guy all around. He’ll be missed!! #Legend

Sad for Andy and all his fans. I never was a huge Murray fan but damn this sucks! I will definitely be watching his 1st rd match for sure. Wouldn't miss it for anything. It'll probably be aired at 3am my time since I'm in central time in the states!

I hope he can get the complete surgery that he needs to recover fully and live a high quality of life and still be involved in tennis somehow!

Incredibly sad but perhaps the right decision so he has a better quality of life with his wife and daughter and any future children they have. He’d make an excellent commentator and I hope to continue seeing his hilarious posts on social media. He will be sorely missed.

he actually has two daughters now

Personality wise he was always the most relatable of the big 4 in conferences and interviews. Nadal comes across as a bit too meek and sheltered, Federer for the most part is very businesslike, and Djokovic tries so hard to be entertaining. Murray was always just Murray. Nothing particularly larger than life. He was just a regular, simple guy who happened to be exceptional at a sport. I'll miss what he brought to the game.

If anyone could be called the people's champion for this era, it's probably him.

Federer outlasted him despite being 6 years older

As far as I am concerned, Murray did it to himself! He saw a chance to overtake Nole for the #1 ranking by overplaying at the end of 2016! He entered every event possible when he admitted his hip was in pain! How stupid was that? Was it worth it to hold the #1 ranking for a few minutes? He hasn't been the same since! I have nothing for him since he's supposed to be a mature, thoughtful veteran! Roger wouldn't of tried such a thing then or now! It just wasn't worth it in the long run! I think he could have saved himself if he hadn't gone to that ridiculous defensive style allowing no-names, nobodies, & never-weres to take him to the limit playing 5 sets from the 1st round on like at the '16 French Open! It just made no sense to me seeing as he dominated Nole in the final in the 1st set! He was toast after that; worn out from playing 30 yards behind the baseline and getting run to death! Idiot! :censored::cautious::mad::(

You mean when Roger went out the way to play Rotterdam just to get the #1 for a few weeks, only to lose it after crashing out in stunning fashion in IW and Miami and then going on to play injury-ridden for the next six months in 2018? No... definitely not Roger

Following is reaction to Andy Murray's announcement on Friday that this year's Australian Open could be his last tournament as a professional.

FORMER U.S. OPEN CHAMPION AND TENNIS PUNDIT ANDY RODDICK

"If this is true, I tip my cap to @andy_murray! Absolute legend. Short list of best tacticians in history. Unreal results in a brutal era... Nothing but respect here. I hope he can finish strong and healthy.
"Just thinking out loud here. He deserves his moment to say goodbye at Wimbledon. He's too important to Great Britain and Wimbledon history to not have it."

MURRAY'S FORMER COACH DARREN CAHILL

"When you search for examples of 'emptied the bucket to be as good as they could be' there should be a picture of Andy Murray sitting under that quote. "Remarkable discipline for training, competition, sacrifice, perfection, a little crazy but a legend of a bloke. Bravo Andy."

SWEDISH FORMER PROFESSIONAL MAGNUS NORMAN

"If true. Feel down to the bone for Andy Murray right now. Amazing player, fighter, nr 1 and multiple GS champion. Deepest respect."

AUSTRALIAN PLAYER THANASI KOKKINAKIS

"You're the man Muzz"

Once upon a time, a player won AO and RG,
Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Canada;
reached finals at USO, WTF, and Rome,
all in one year,
only to finish as YE #2.
That player is Novak Djokovic.
The guy who took the YE #1 from him is Andy Murray.
The year was 2016.
Came 2017, they combined to win 3 titles below ATP500, and together called it a season at the end of WB.
The course of tennis history was changed.

Wow! I'm shocked. Andy Murray was such a good player at his best. In any other era he finishes with multiple YE # 1 and probably a double digit slam count. What a player to have the success that he did during the Fedalovic era. Congratulations Andy - gutted for you and your fans how it has ended. It was good to see you have that final 2016 run before injury took ahold of you.

Andy had suffered from sciatica for years. It's a daily, constant pain that shoots from your lower back/butt down your leg (or both legs). It's horrible. It makes you adjust how you walk, run, stand, sit, lay down...everything. If the pain shoots down your left side, you adjust by placing more on your right side and vice versa. My family/friends would often tell me I was walking or standing crooked. I suspect Andy adjusting his natural movements to make the sciatica pain more bearable led to his hip problems.
