unfortunately he is not able to control how he wants to end his career since he is ending it due to injury, i hope at the very least he can end it where he wants to. i almost feel like there is no point to playing AO and then he can just rest up, play wimbledon and hang it up

Probably doesn't make people feel better but some perspective here are retirement ages for all-time players:
McEnroe-33, technically retired at 35 but played his last major matches at 33
Wilander-31, shortly before his 32nd
Becker-31, pretty much was inactive for 2 years then came back to play Wimbledon one last time, so effectively at 29
Edberg-30
Courier-29, last tournament in Miami before his 30th
Rafter-29, similar to Murray he was only a few years removed from top level and did reach Wimbledon Final and Canada-Cincinnati Finals his last season
Of course Borg we know didn't retire due to body.

But in the long run I think it is better for Murray. He has an entire life outside tennis to look forward to, including raising a kid. He doesn't want his kid to see him in a wheelchair.

When he mentioned last week that he still feels some pain in his hip (even a year after surgery and very limited match play) it became pretty clear that he would never make a full recovery.
I said if he was smart, he'd stop pushing it and making 2018 a farewell tour. Looks like that's exactly what's happening.

My favorite of the big four player by far. He contributed so much to this current era - the best era in men's tennis. Not interested in image and never afraid to be himself. Great game and work ethic. So unfair that he couldn't retire on his own terms instead of being forced to by injury. I wish him the best for the future whatever he decides to do next.

I had the same reaction when I saw the headline and read this. Actually searched it up in several places. This is a shock. I hope that his injury does not end up being so bad it affects his non tennis life.Shocked and saddened. I still can't believe it, keep thinking it's some kind of bad joke, but it's backed up by multiple media sources.

And he will always be remembered more fondly for having to exit prematurely, as opposed to sticking around too long. Small consolation for someone who will be watching the Big 3 win Slams for the next 5 years, but there it is.
Sad, but we knew it was coming. When my non-TTW friends would ask me about him I'd always say "I think he's done", and they would always react incredulously.

I shouldn't be surprised given his age and how much he's struggled the last couple years since becoming #1, but the realization that the illustrious Big 4 will lose a member just hit me like a rock. Murray has been a fixture at the top of the rankings as long as I've watched tennis. He is an all-time great in his own right, having checked all the big boxes in his resume.
This will be the biggest retirement since Agassi in 2006.

Sad for Andy and all his fans. I never was a huge Murray fan but damn this sucks! I will definitely be watching his 1st rd match for sure. Wouldn't miss it for anything. It'll probably be aired at 3am my time since I'm in central time in the states!
I hope he can get the complete surgery that he needs to recover fully and live a high quality of life and still be involved in tennis somehow!

Incredibly sad but perhaps the right decision so he has a better quality of life with his wife and daughters. He’d make an excellent commentator and I hope to continue seeing his hilarious posts on social media. He will be sorely missed.

Personality wise he was always the most relatable of the big 4 in conferences and interviews. Nadal comes across as a bit too meek and sheltered, Federer for the most part is very businesslike, and Djokovic tries so hard to be entertaining. Murray was always just Murray. Nothing particularly larger than life. He was just a regular, simple guy who happened to be exceptional at a sport. I'll miss what he brought to the game.
If anyone could be called the people's champion for this era, it's probably him.

As far as I am concerned, Murray did it to himself! He saw a chance to overtake Nole for the #1 ranking by overplaying at the end of 2016! He entered every event possible when he admitted his hip was in pain! How stupid was that? Was it worth it to hold the #1 ranking for a few minutes? He hasn't been the same since! I have nothing for him since he's supposed to be a mature, thoughtful veteran! Roger wouldn't of tried such a thing then or now! It just wasn't worth it in the long run! I think he could have saved himself if he hadn't gone to that ridiculous defensive style allowing no-names, nobodies, & never-weres to take him to the limit playing 5 sets from the 1st round on like at the '16 French Open! It just made no sense to me seeing as he dominated Nole in the final in the 1st set! He was toast after that; worn out from playing 30 yards behind the baseline and getting run to death! Idiot!

You mean when Roger went out the way to play Rotterdam just to get the #1 for a few weeks, only to lose it after crashing out in stunning fashion in IW and Miami and then going on to play injury-ridden for the next six months in 2018? No... definitely not Roger

Wow! I'm shocked. Andy Murray was such a good player at his best. In any other era he finishes with multiple YE # 1 and probably a double digit slam count. What a player to have the success that he did during the Fedalovic era. Congratulations Andy - gutted for you and your fans how it has ended. It was good to see you have that final 2016 run before injury took ahold of you.

Andy had suffered from sciatica for years. It's a daily, constant pain that shoots from your lower back/butt down your leg (or both legs). It's horrible. It makes you adjust how you walk, run, stand, sit, lay down...everything. If the pain shoots down your left side, you adjust by placing more on your right side and vice versa. My family/friends would often tell me I was walking or standing crooked. I suspect Andy adjusting his natural movements to make the sciatica pain more bearable led to his hip problems.
