Too bad.Tsonga deserved at least a third set.He made a couple of bad decisions with those droppers on those big points.

If Tsonga had half a brain, the score would've been reversed. Seriously, how many sets have you won on droppers, Tsonga? It's a bad idea!

Tsonga should have won that 2nd set tiebreak probably. Too many silly errors. Murray overall is just too consistent and solid a player for Tsonga though. Today still I think did show Murray perhaps has to add a more consistently agressive mindset to breakthrough and win a slam.

Do you know what? I actually don't think you or many others realise how hard this Tsonga bloke strikes the ball, Murray adapted his game to beat him, as he does many others, he plays with controlled aggresion when he needs to, trust me.

I just wonder if either of them could have managed 5 sets?

I wish I could say that it was a good match but it wasn't.The only highlights were some beauty points by jo.

This match represented the worst extremes in tennis, the mega-offensive player who sprays errors all over the place only to alternate them with incredible winners and the way too defensive player, who goes for a winner only in extreme situations and is just content to bring ball back into play.

Seriously,at times in seemed like a WTA match because they had problems on eachother's serve and it wasn't because on the tremendous returning(although murray did have some good ones) but because of the failure to convert freaking break points.Tsonga had so many good chances but squandered them easily.

My heart goes out to all tsonga fans.It must be hard rooting for jo who will make a terrific shot only to make a fool of himself on the next 2-3.He should shape up and actually develop some freaking tactics."Hit the FH hard is not a tactic".Also,jo's backhand reminds of old roddick's backhand,it is a real liability.

Congrats to new nr.2 Andy Murray but I can't say I was impressed.

Murray served 41% and still managed to win the match.Tsonga made some very poor shot selections at critical points in the match.A drop shot on set point from him was just bad.Now i'm convinced that Fed massively choked yesterday.

One interesting thing from this match was how Tsonga did just camp out on Murrays forehand crosscourt pass, I thought that was very effective in nullifying an aspect of Murrays game that often causes people so many problems. Murray being so predictable with that shot then either started pulling them wide trying to create too much of an angle or giving Tsonga a decent look at the volley

How does Murray possibly manage to win matches with such a liability of a serve.
41% today and 50% yesterday. And his second serve is awful too!
Congratulations to Murray though.

Congrats to Murray on becoming no.2 just to solid for Tsonga, he probably has to play more aggressive to win a slam.

In a way though who are his threats for the Open.

-Nadal. I love Rafa, but I would be amazed if he found the form quickly enough on his worst surface to have any real shot.

-Djokovic. Sadly the guy is a mess right now. It will be a relief if he even makes the quarter of the Open.

-Del Potro. OK maybe a threat.

-Roddick. maybe a threat.

-Federer. definitely a threat but his performance here didnt impress but he seems to play mostly just for the slams now anyway.

So Federer, Roddick, and Del Potro probably his main competition. Despite losing his last meetings to Roddick and Del Potro he would probably be favored over either at the U.S Open, though tommorows final might give us a better idea on that. Then there is Federer, yeah Federer is the way better big event performer to date, but Murray is a bad matchup for Federer and owns him outside of last years U.S Open final. He may not even have to play great to win the U.S Open this year, especialy if he avoids Federer and Roddick (certainly possible).

I agree with alot of would you say. If Rafa plays Federer I would back Rafa to win but he will probably have to get through a few big hitters to get to Federer. In terms of favourites for the Open I would say

1. Federer
2. Murray
3. Roddick
4. Nadal
5. Djokovic
6. Del Potro

Roddick did the same thing at Wimbledon.

Remarkable how few people give Roddick a good shot to beat Murray again at the US Open

Djoker does not deserve to be a favorite...prime upset candidate in 3rd or 4th rd.

That looks about right other than maybe Del Potro a bit low. I guess you arent sold on him yet though. I might overvalue him also though, only 1 slam semi so far, but he is improving quickly right now. How he finishes this weekend and performs next week will further impact my current opinon on his Open chances, as well as some of the others.

I agree if Rafa and Federer meet that Rafa will find a way to win probably. Federer is spooked by Rafa's sheer presence no matter what shape or form he is in, or the surface, one reason I laugh at the Federer GOAT talk as no GOAT would be spooked by anyone that way.

I rate him, I think he can be a slam winner but I haven't forgiven him for choking in the 5th set against Federer at the French. :)

soooo ... if fed's no.1 and muzz is no. 2 at the time of the uso draw, and all goes as their fans would expect (meaning andy would not avoid federer at all), then andy could win uso.

i disagree w/the word "choking" for the FO ... for the AO maybe .... but have you noticed that every time he plays someone, he improves his stats against them??? :?:

Certainly possible. Not sure who I would pick in a US Open final between Federer and Murray though. I dont think Federer is intimidated by Murray like he is by Nadal, Murray is just a bad matchup for him. Still Federer is the consumate big event performer, and Murray is still trying to prove this. Their only slam meeting so far Federer schooled Murray. I would expect the next one to be closer (if not on clay) but as for who would win, not totally sure on that one.

Yeah that was dissapointing. He really should have won that match and won the French Open title this year instead of Federer. :( He basically bullied Federer off the court for 3 sets (was a bit unlucky to not win in straights) than the mental side of it all came into play.
