My quest: Finding the best overgrip (Results!)

Greetings,

I always have been really sensative to how a grip felt, I prefer overgrips to be really tacky and absorbent. With that in mind I try't to find the best overgrip on the market. First I browsed the forums to find a list of candidates. These list contained grips that were mostly really hyped on the forums, or grips that always had good reviews.

After browsing for a while I came up with the following grips (Thickness):

Signum Pro Magic (0.75)
Tourna Mega Tac (~0.6)
Solinco Wondergrip (0.6)
Gamma Supreme (~0.6)
Yonex Supergrap (0.6)
Tecnifibre Pro Contact (0.6)
Wilson Pro Overgrip (~0.55)
Pacific X Tack Pro (0.55)

Grips that I already had in my possession that also will be review are:

Pacific Softy (0.8)
Babolat Pro Tour (0.6)
Babolat VS Original (0.44)

After testing them for a few months I will cover my toughts in a not to structured way and after that I will rank them in the aspects of Tackiness, Absorbency, Dryness, and Overall preference.

Signum Pro Magic (0.75)

These grips where actually really nice, especially for the price. I bought 36 of them for about 20 euro's. They had a decent tack which lasted long and were nice absorbent.

Tourna Mega Tac (~0.6)

Said to be the most tacky grips on the market and when I felt it for the first time I knew what people ment, and especially with the frequently combined phrase: It felt Glued. This grip felt really tacky but not in a traditional way. It felt like it had been dipped in glue, which wasn't to bad if it wasn't for the fact that that glue coating wore of relatively fast. The absorbancy of this grip was really good, the application was somewhat annoying because they aren't pre cut. Overall a really nice tack, which wears off to fast.

Solinco Wondergrip (0.6)

I am going to spoil the suprise. This was by far my overall favorite. After the Tourna Mega Tac it was the most tacky grip iv'e tested but it didn't had the glue feel as much and the tack lasted alot longer in my experience. The absorbancy was great (comparable to the Tourna Mega tac) and the price was decent.

Gamma Supreme (~0.6)

Another overgrip which is really praised on the forums. It was once again really tacky but in a different way then the Tourna and Solinco, it was alot more rubbery then those two. It also felt more dry then the others. The absorbancy was once again great. The price was cheap and the performance was good.

Yonex Supergrap (0.6)

Probably the most praised grip on the list. I was really wondering how it felt and how it compared to the others. To start of with the tackiness, it was less then the supreme, wondergrip and mega tac. A thing I noticed was that certain colors had a different feeling then others. The deep blue and the black where less tacky and the tack wore off faster then the white one, where the white supergrap was less absorbant. Overall it is a good grip you like a decent tack combined with an average thickness, but I expected more to be honest.

Tecnifibre Pro Contact (0.6)

Not as famous as alot of the other grips in the list but it had alot of good reviews. I tested the white color which felt really similar to the white Yonex Supergrap except it was a bit thicker and more tacky. It also felt really, really dry to me which was also the thing that made me not like this grip as much as the others. ADDED LATER: So i've been playing this grip some more and it really feels like the first ones I have tested where much dry'er then the later ones, finished my second 12 pack now and I like this grip much more then I used to, it's tacky and the tack is lasting very well, not too dry, not too slippery, and the comfort and feel are right where they should be.

Wilson Pro Overgrip (~0.55)

These felt really similar as the white Yonex Supergrap to me. The thickness felt the same and the tackiness aswell (maby slightly higher), but the tackiness on this grip lasted longer in my experience. Overall a really nice grip.

Pacific X Tack Pro (0.55)

These felt really similar to the Gamma Supreme, a really rubbery tacky feel combined with a nice absorbancy. They where slightly thinner then the Gamma Supreme. But after playing with this grip for a while I noticed the downside; The tack wears of really fast. The durability made me kinda not like this grip as much as the Gamma Supreme.

Pacific Softy (0.8)

Played for years with this grip and when I tested all the other grips I figured that this grip wasn't that bad. It has a nice tack which lasts for quiet some time and they are really absorbant.

Babolat Pro Tour (0.6)

When I played for the first hour with this grip I thought it was horrible. The average tack it had seemed to wear off really fast, but suprisingly the tack that was left after the first hour remained for a really long time. Overall it wasn't that bad, in fact I kind of like it.

Babolat VS Original (0.44)

Pretty much the same as the package describes; ultra thin and dry.

Prince ResiPro Perforated (0.6)

Haven't tried much performated overgrips but this one was awesome. The thickness was 0.6 but it felt way thicker then other overgrips with an equal thickness. The comfort was really great, maby even the best I tried. The tac was just good, and it was lasting very well. Overall a really great overgrip, one of the best I have tried.

Head Prestige Pro (0.6)

So it comes with really nice designed packaging but when it comes to the performance of the actual grip, I was not too impressed. The tack is moderate and wears off fast, the comfort is good though. Overall it felt low quality and I personally find that there are way better overgrips.

Toalson Ultra Grip (0.5)

This grip is from the Japanese brand: Toalson. This grip is one of the best i've tested. It has nice tack which lasts long. It outperforms Wilson Pro, Yonex Supergrap and Solinco Wondergrip, it does not last as long as tecnifibre pro contact however. It feels thicker than 0.5, and comes with good comfort. It's easy to apply as well. Overall this has reached the number two spot in my overall ranking,

The solinco wondergrips are great in cool weather but I find they get very slippery if I sweat much.

I'd suggest also triying the Technifibre Pro Player (perforated .5mm). It has a softer, more leathery feel than the Pro Contact, but still with good tackiness.

I sometimes felt that the Solinco got a little too moisty. I even lost grip and control of my stick a couple of times with the Solinco, which was a let down, because I was really liking it.

Did you experience something similar?

I have not tested them in hot weather, but I can imagine it will give me the same problem! I might switch to something more dry like the Wilson Pro then.

Been using Wilson Pro for years now in white. Once my reel is gone I'll be switching over to the Yonex Super Graps and try those out. I'm guessing about the same.

If you are looking for no tack, absorbency and cheap cost... the yonex dry grap is the best grip

See, I'm a heavy hand sweater that play at the 6.0 level and I prefer the tacky feeling to the dry one. I actually obsess over the feeling of my hands over the grip.

To whitstand my overly sweaty hands -which I struggled with as a junior to a point where I didn't play much tournaments during the summer since I always had the feeling my racquet was about to slip out of my hands- I have been experimenting playing using liquid chalk made for climbing, like Mammut Liquid Chalk or Beal Liquid Chalk (finishing the Beal bottle as you read this). 250ml last forever.

(I have used Prince Grip Enhancer in the past with some success, but liquid chalk just worked better for me. Nishikori and Serena use some kind of liquid chalk.)

(Don't ask me if I have used wristbands, a towel, and racquets switches at the changeovers, I tried everything.)

With all of that said, just consider that my comments are based on the relation of the liquid chalk use and the proprieties of the overgrips.


I haven't tried all of the listed above, but here is my opinion:

Tourna Mega Tac becomes slick/slimy when it's humid / you sweat. It really doesn't need that much to be useless. No good.

Solinco Wondergrip is a very soft and elastic overgrip with some nice tack to it, but again, when you sweat, not the best.

Gamma Supreme is my grip of choice at the moment. Not very elastic (which I love!), pretty tacky, absorbs ok. Last a long time.

Tecnifibre Pro Contact was a revelation when I only tried 3 of these last year. Have been looking to get my hand on some others for a while now. Damn canada. The feel was soft enough, not too elastic, tacky, absorbent. I felt like it might be my new grip of choice until the shop I bought it at was out of that particular overgrip.

Tecnifibre Pro Players was ok. The feel (softness and tackiness) was under the Pro Contact's, the absorption was also under its big brother's. I would still put this overgrip ahead of Wilson Pro and Yonex Supergrap.

Yonex and Wilson are the ultimate benchmark overgrip. They feel different to me but they both are too spongy/elastic (I hate when I feel the grip moving/turning under my hand). They also don't last very long and are not tacky enough for my taste.

Tourna Tac is my default tacky grip. It has a decent tack, absorbs fairly good, feels soft/solid enough. It's longevity sucks (pieces come apart very quickly): 4 hours and done.

Prince ResiPro is slimy when wet and doesn't react all that good with liquid chalk.

i would agree that pro contact is one of the best. it has a lot of lasting tack (used it for days) and is a good absorber too! i would recommend you to get 3 or 4 12-pack grips for that.

Seems likely that your preference differs when you got sweaty hands, I got ultra dry hands. A friend of mine also has very sweaty hands and likes dry grips for that reason. They don't get that slippery when he gets sweaty hands. He uses babolat VS orignal I think.

try the yonex dry grap. my dad uses it and he has dry hands.

I haven't tested as many over grips as you guys, but I tried enough to know that my observations are consistent with yours. I have only moderately sweaty hands, but in the FL summer it gets quite nasty. I use Prince Grip Enhancer, wrist bands, and a towel to help keep dry.

My default OG right now is Gamma Supreme. Good all around grip, widely available, and reasonably priced. I also have some Dunlop U-Sweat, which feels a little dryer but not as tacky.

I used Yonex Supergrap in the past, but I thought it was overrated. It just doesn't have the absorption I need. It feels like a slightly thicker Wilson Pro, which is great until you sweat; no absorption in that one. Same with Head Xtreme Pro.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Original Tourna Grip. Not my favorite because of lack of tack and durability, but nothing absorbs like it.

Just a little update. I tested most of these grips mainly in the colder months of the year. Now that it is getting warmer I notice I start wrappig different grips on my racket. Mainly Tecnifibre Pro Contact, Wilson Pro and Yonex Supergrap (all white). I notice that in the heat there tack remains alot better. Since they start off being a bit dryer they also get less slippery in warm weather. I notice that especially Tourna Mega tac and more rubbery overgrips like pacific xtra tack get slippery fast. But also Solinco Wondergrip doesnt seem to perform that good in warmer weather as it does in cold weather.

Personally I found Wilson Pro to be unacceptable in the Florida heat. It used to be my default OG until one day it slipped so bad my racquet flew to the next court and nearly took out an elderly lady. Supergrap feels almost the same, and it's nearly as bad in hot weather. They do start out tacky, but if you're going to use them in hot weather you need to keep your hands dry.

I do hate slimy overgrips. I sweat a lot and when it is summer time I need an overgrip that stays dry and not slick. I've only found one that I like and it is very hard to find. I'll try the one you mentioned here and see how that works for me. I HATE any Toura-Grip overgrips. Horrible products for me.

I'm partial to the original Tourna-grip XL because that's what I grew up with. I've also started using Solinco Heaven Grips which are really nice - similar to the Tourna-grip but with just the slightest hint of tackiness.

Right on. The blue grip won't slip. (even though it barely lasts a set!) I will use supergrap in the winter mths (Nov-March) due to better longevity but come Spring I start double faulting with it so the blue goes back on.

I also have to give a nod to Dunlop Osmo Dry as a good option for fellow heavy sweaters.

I'm looking for above-average OG thickness. I was facing the classical dilemma of "Babolat grip is bigger than size", and I chose the bad solution for myself, i.e I went down in size instead of keeping the same order size. Therefore now I'm looking for a really thick OG.

I'm from Europe and bought it in a local store, I think tennis-point sells them as well. You could also try two thin overgrips, for example: A babolat VS (0.44) and a Yonex Supergrap (0.6), the white supergrap is much thinner then that in my experiece because it stretches alot, so adding these two might be also an solution.

I've tried it. It's very thin and great for feel and the tackiness is just right. Where it fails is absorbency. It would be great if I didn't play in hot humid conditions so much of the time.

yet to find a grip I like better than tourna tac. the blue one feels good and seems to last as long as others I have tried. Has that rubbery feeling that I like after a few hours. Still looking. Might try that solinco or whatever that one is.

I tried the Solinco heaven grip and was thoroughly unimpressed. It wouldn't stay securely wrapped to the main grip!

Needless to say, I quickly went back to Tourna XL and Supergrap.

Nice review.
I also noticed that tackiness can vary among different colors. At least among Yonex overgrip, brighter colors tend to be more tackier than darker colors (yellow and white are far tackier than black or navy).

i agree with your final #1 ranking except that **** has also a great overwrap. next time do one for real leather grips. the results are interesting. Prince used to have an incredible leather that almost could tear the skin off the inside of your hand. the bevels were the sharpest i have ever felt.

I’d like to know what is the best overgrip that doesn’t leave a residue on the grip underneath. I’ve been using the Wilson Pro overgrip. If you don’t change it regularly enough, there’s a white residue left on my black grips underneath. I’ve resorted to changing the replacement grips to black, rather than changing the overgrip to black.

They shred up fast now, I used to be able to keep one on for a month. It seems to me within the last year something changed. Now they just shred after a couple sessions. It's sad, went back to tourna lol which also shreds. Wtf lol.

Is pro the same texture as pro comfort but without padding? Thats what im assuming but ive never tried regular pro
