Nadal: I am used to threat posed by unstoppable Djokovic

April 21, 2015 12:35 IST

A red hot Novak Djokovic is being tipped to end Rafael Nadal's stranglehold at Roland Garros in June but the Spaniard dismissed the threat as being no different to those he has faced before. The Serbian World No 1 has been an unstoppable force in recent weeks, winning 17 matches on the bounce and becoming the first man to win the season's first three Masters title.

He comfortably beat Nadal on his beloved red clay in last week's Monte Carlo Masters semi-finals, and the nature of Djokovic's 6-3, 6-3 mauling means plenty are backing him to complete his collection of Grand Slam titles this year by winning his first French Open.

‘He had an impeccable year in 2011 as well as he is having in 2015’

But as far as Nadal is concerned, 2015 is no different to 2013, 2012 or even 2011.

"Djokovic was good in 2011, in 2012, 2013 as well as in 2015. Sometimes you win more and some you win less," Nadal, who has triumphed at the French Open in nine of the last 10 years, told reporters at the Barcelona Open.

"It is difficult to win everything all the time. Djokovic was as good then in 2011 as he is now. He had an impeccable year in 2011 as well as he is having in 2015.

"I have to congratulate him."

"The rest of the players have to accept that at the moment he is the World No 1 with all he has achieved this year," added Nadal, who has had a patchy year after making his comeback in January following another lengthy injury and illness break.

"This year I have to do things right, get back to a very high level to face him on the court," Nadal said.

"Tennis-wise, I feel a lot better than a few weeks ago. I am going to try to get as far as I can and to play as well as I can, topping the level I showed in Monte Carlo."

Man, this whole Nadal/Djokovic thing is at a new level these days  these guys can't say ****.
You clearly weren't around when Chris and Martina used to interview and send explosive missives that echoed around the world. They were pretty good shade throwers in spite of their long friendship. Nancy Lieberman created a lot of strife for Martina.

Martina and Graf continued the tradition as Graf began her historic rise. Do you know how desperate it appears when a tennis professional in her 30's is shading a 17 year old girl to the press? It was uncomfortable to witness.

Except in 2011. Ooh come at me baby!

That's true. He was denied the opportunity to take on Nadal in 2011 at RG. He got his chance in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and Nadal 619'd him. Djokovic looking more and more defeated with each defeat :(
Federer saved him from the Mallorcan beast in 2011.

I don't think so MN, not in 2011. You've admitted yourself that Nadal didn't play his best clay court tennis that year.

It's never mattered against Novak at the French, I'm not giving anyone a pass against the guy that's lost one BO5 match on clay in his life up to this day, sorry. He played just as well on clay in 2012 and 2013 and still went home with a platter that would look good with a bunch of wings and cups of ranch and blue cheese on them.

Except he played at a higher level in 2011 and you know it. And why are you making out that being RU is so embarrassing? :?

On this one I guess he always will hammer me seeing as Nadal did win RG that year and has beaten Djokovic the last few years but at the same time I don't think it's a completely crazy thing to suggest that Nole would have had a great shot at beating the Spaniard on Chatrier in 2011 given how high his level was and that he'd beaten him in not one but two clay Masters leading up to it. And it's fair to say I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Novak is not a bunny of rafa ..
Novak bagelled rafa at french open in 2012 .. But rafa started crying and yelling at umpire to postpone the match , and Novak should have never fallen to Nadal's tactics .. As when Novak asked to water to slippery court, Rafa refused "humbly "... ;)
Novak will defeat rafa at french open .. His mentality is different compared to fed... He will do it...

Lol you are already looking for excuses , that rafa is old now and so on.. Novak is the same age as Rafa ..
Every match played between the two is fair and square ...
If Novak has never beat rafa at french , even Rafa has never beaten Novak at Australian open.. And will never win WTF as long as Novak is Playing...
Btw your guy has rested 6 months to prepare for french , I wish him luck .. anyways he is not good enough to compete any other court apart from french nowadays ;)
He is Novak's bunny everywhere except french ;)

Nadal won the French Open 2 times before Djokovic won his 1st tour title. That's how far apart they are. And ten years later he's still the defending champion whilst Djokovic who is not like Federer has lost more times to Nadal at RG than Federer did.

Just like Roger ,Novak is consistent and fair enough to play every event whether its his favourite surface or not.. Ofcourse rafa is Clay goat, but Novak is the one who has improved his game the most in these last 4 yrs.. Dat is what Roger said at dubai...
Rafa plays only for reaching the number 17 and nothing else... He played consistent in 2011 and we all know what happend during that period... So ,he takes a break of 3 months ,every year just to prepare for french ..how many time has rafa faced federer at US open?? How many time has rafa faces novak at wimbledon after 2011?? and how many at Australian open?? on the other hand , roger during his prime, and Novak during last 4 yrs had faced rafa at french.. irrespective of their weekness at french against rafa... Both of them deserves credit for playing for the fans, and playing fair and square...

Oh yes, Nadal planned all his injuries and surgeries. Because by not participating in Slams you have a good chance of winning them.

But then why should Rafa get more sympathy for his injuries than ,the respect Roger and Novak should get for consistently making it to the final sunday of every Slam ,regardless of the Surface... why?? Isnt remaining injury-free part of sport??
If rafa defeated fed 5 times at french open , and never met Roger at US open in his prime where obviously Roger was the best just like Rafa is at French , why should Roger be laughed at for consistently making those finals..
Same goes with Novak , after dismantling rafa at wimby 2011 Rafa lost his confidence at Wimby... and he hardly takes wimby seriously after that... why should Novak be get he disrespect of facing Rafa six time at French .. INFACT, Roger and Novak deserve respect for making it to Rafa at French ,even though Rafa is the best of that particular Surface... playing for the fans and the Sport..

Nadal fans contradict themselves. On the one hand they think he's the best ever on clay who's unbeatable on Phillipe Chatrier but on the other hand they think it's embarrassing, even shameful, that Novak's never beaten him there. They can't have it both ways.

Oh we can. It's called trolling which I have no doubt you are very familiar with.

Nadal sounds butthurt because his usual "I'm not the favourite for anything" mantra didn't work out this year.
