Next year 2 players will be bidding strongly for the historic Grand Slam, winning all 4 in one year. Rafael Nadal and Kim Clijsters. Will either of them achieve this historic feat or will both?

Seriously, putting these 2 in the same sentence is a crime, as good a player as Kim is. She has won only the USO thus far while Rafa has completed the career Slam.

Clijsters? on the basis of what?

Great player, but has been successful only on US Open. Of course I can see her doing well in all slams, but she would be lucky to win 2 in one year. You better hope Serena is sidelined for the rest of next year or Clijsters might not even have US Open again.

Kim beat Serena at the U.S Open in only her 2nd event back when Serena was alot stronger than she will be at this years U.S Open just short of her 30th birthday. Kim has also won the last 3 U.S Opens she played. Kim will be the bookies favorite at the US Open this year even with Serena playing, I gaurantee it. And with Serena absent she is the clear favorite for the Australian Open too. The French if wide open, but if Kim returns to her 2003-2006 level she is taking it unless Justine also returns to her former level or Stosur plays even better than last year. That leaves Wimbledon but who knows how Serena will be playing after a layoff and Venus will be 31 by then.

So I think a Calendar Slam for Kim is very possible.

She has been to the finals and semis of the Australian and French many times over. It was always Henin (or Capriati) stopping her at the French and usually Serena (or Henin) at the Australian. Those obstacles for the moment are out of the way taking into account Henin's plunge to mediocrity as far as her form thus far in her comeback. So there is no reason Kim shouldnt be able to win both of those this year if she is on her game. That leaves only Wimbledon and if Serena isnt back on form for that she has a great shot even there. Venus will be 31 and is visibly slowing down, and there isnt really any other obstacle.

With Serena's health status in question, and being certain to already miss the years first slam (and not a real threat to win the years second) and the so called World #1 slamless, Kim enters 2011 as the women to beat at the moment. I dont see who else it would be. She atleast has a good shot of winning atleast 2 slam titles this year.

Neither has got a chance. Clijsters simply won't post better results than Serena (whether Serena beats her or not) at three straight slams, and, mark my words, Nadal's momentum will come to a screeching halt in Melbourne, when he is taken out before the second week even begins.

She has been to the finals and semis of the Australian and French many times over.

But she failed to win it; moreover, aged as she is, we cannot count out Schiavone on clay, as her 2010 performance was an act of focused domination, while Stosur proved she's no pushover on that surface.

That leaves only Wimbledon and if Serena isnt back on form for that she has a great shot even there. Venus will be 31 and is visibly slowing down, and there isnt really any other obstacle.

Still, we must look at her history there: Clijsters was and remains a very poor Wimbledon contender up to this point in her career (particularly for one of the top players of her generation). Like the Williams sisters, she is aging...but does not share the sisters' inherent ability to understand / win on grass. Even Zvonereva appeared to be the better grass court player (this year) through the rounds (until the final, at least).

Clijsters is a strong player, but let's not overestimate her skills. That said, she is my favorite to win AO and be the obvious go-to woman for the USO.

Regarding Nadal: I see him capable of taking 3 of the majors, but somewhere along the line, fatigue will set in. If he's smart, he will not go overboard playing the clay season and just target the FO--which he can win with ease sans any real warm-up at the other events.

I think either one could do it and quite possibly both, although unlikely so because of the weaker competition, I'm voting Kim.

Well obviously Nadal wont. Kim has taken the first step of four though.

Nadal?
No, I don't think so.
Clijsters is possible. At least no other woman will be able to achieve this in 2011.
