New Stringer Questions

So I just got the ats super stringer 2, except it has the progression tray table (i think) and the gripper is mounted with the gamma x2 post. It looks like the ats super stringer 3 (except mine says ats super stringer 2). So these are my questions:

1. the string sometimes gets stuck b/w the gripper and the ratchet, there appears to be a small gap b/w the gripper and the ratchet. Is there anything I can do to fix this, or just be more careful?

2. Sometimes after I tension and release the previous clamp, the weight goes down and is no longer horizontal, do I need to clamp tighter?

3. Also the racquet hold down plates seems to move, I tighten it as much as i can with my middle finger. Should i tighten it more using my index finger?

Also I strung 4 frames so far, props to YULitle for his stringing videos. I recommend the ats super stringer pretty strongly to new stringers, its only $135. It came in 3 days and I live in Hawaii. It came with 3 packets of Gamma String, Gamma Advantage, Gamma Challenger Synthetic Gut, and Gamma Duraspin. Comes with everything you need to string, except for the diagonal cutting pliers (which i had) so very good buy. Thank you for helping a new stringer out.

Can't comment on 1 & 3 but with respect to 2, clamp as close to the frame as possible to reduce the amount of tension rod drop. So long as the rod remains near horizontal (a range at the end of the rod 1.5 inches above or below horizontal is fine) the tension variation will be minimal. I like the rod to be slightly above horizontal (still within the range) before unclamping so that the rod drops slightly to very near exact horizontal. Best of luck and welcome to the home stringers club!!

There should be no space between the gripper and the ratchet. That would be annoying as heck for the string to continually fall into a small gap between the two. I just checked my X-2 and the gripper and ratchet are touching.

2. Sometimes after I tension and release the previous clamp, the weight goes down and is no longer horizontal, do I need to clamp tighter?

This is caused by the amount of untensioned string between where the floating clamp is placed. If it goes below horizontal, clamp the string again, lift the weight and re-tension the string. You'll learn as you do more and more jobs how to deal with this.

3. Also the racquet hold down plates seems to move, I tighten it as much as i can with my middle finger. Should i tighten it more using my index finger?

They should not move (or rotate) at all. I tighten the screw with my thumb and pointer (index) finger. They should be very snug. Just don't tighten them so much they may crush the frame. You definitely don't want your frame popping off the spacer that fits on the threaded rod in the middle of a stringjob.

i feel like the other 2 question were answered. you want the 3 screws on the bottom bigger half to be very tight. the top screw is adjustable, if it is too loose then the string will fall behind, if it is too tight it won't 'pop' back up once you release tension, you have to adjust it to find a happy medium.
