We said the same about these girls. Let's see what happens.
Ostapenko:
Weak serve, won by being super aggressive on returns and going for the lines. Iirc, she placed the majority of her balls within a zone of 50 cm from the lines. She is the poster-women for the one hit wonder. She will never be able to repeat this again imo.
Wozniacki:
She is the ultimate retriever with no offensive weapons. How she managed to steal that slam with her brand of tennis is truly mind-boggling. Her win reminds me of Penetta's and Bartoli's slam wins: they all knew they hit the jackpot and there was no chance of ever repeating it.
Andreescu:
She plays very aggressive from the baseline but is a run-of-the-mill top WTA ball basher. Can possibly be successful again if the overcomes her injury issues. Not sure about her future slam potential.
Swiatek:
Over-reliant on top spin, often ending up hitting the FH late and coughing up short balls. Attackable second serve. Her game is built for clay, even if she's been successful on HC this year. But her insistence on TS makes her too one dimensional and vulnerable imo. Might win more RGs.
Stephens:
Smart player with solid strokes, but falls into the Wozniacki trap imo. Lacks the big weapons, and is not a super aggressive mover. Likes to stay back. Not likely to win a another slam.
Krejcikova:
Smart player with solid strokes, but lacks pace both in her shots and movement. Great volley skills though, so she can cause damage to many draws. Solid win at RG, but not likely to win another slam imo as there are so many great players popping up.
Kenin:
Aggressive and solid, but lacks the big weapons and is not that crafty. Seems like a one hit wonder.
Since Raducanu is thriving on HC, she has two slam opportunities each year. And based on her performance this USO, it's hard not to include her in the handful of favorites for the next HC slams at least. She didn't win by bashing away, she constructed points, and showed a tremendous arsenal of shots and tactics to win her matches, which imo, is only mirrored in the game style of Halep and Barty. But they don't have the same offensive attitude and lack the big weapons from behind the baseline. Now I didn't see Raducanu hitting clean winners from behind the baseline, but she stepped in to take time away and was very aggressive at this, which Halep almost never does, and not really Barty either.
