No shade on Emma but is she a 1 slam wonder.

I'll say this, I was very impressed with her play and enjoyed watching her. But I also didn't walk away from this tournament seeing anything particularly special in her game that makes me confident more slams are on the way. There's no standout shot and not a ton of pop on any of her groundstrokes. Not the best defender out there either. She just played an incredibly clean & consistent tournament. Seemed to come up with the goods on every big point she needed to win, that FH up the line seemed to clear the net every time she needed it to. That makes for a dream run but not necessarily future success. But we'll see how her game develops with age.

I hate to be that guy, but she really did have a soft draw. I want to see how her game stands up to the other top players. Sakkari probably had the most power of her opponents but was so unbelievably nervous that she couldn't even keep the ball in play long enough to test Emma's defense. I want to see how Raducanu handles the power of an Osaka or Andreescu. Or how she handles the more consistent point constructors like Barty and Halep.
Yup nothing game changing but quite good and solid. Also has a good second serve and quite a good mover.

She's not a tank like Andreescu or Osaka, but she's generating excellent pace nonetheless.

Her talent resides in centering perfectly the ball and beating her opponents with the superior pace she gets from it, coupled with her athleticism and youth.

People think Sakkari, Bencic played their worst match, but i think that's what Raducanu's pace does to people.

Considering her body type is perfect for endurance and her talent , she can stay at the top for at least 5-6 years is she keeps her head straight. And that's what's impressing me the most after hearing her talk.

The interesting thing about Raducanu that is different than other slam winners is that it wasn’t really her strokes that won it for her.

It was her superior athleticism. She has an extra gear of speed for covering the court. She outclassed Fernandez with her superior movement. Fernandez seemed deflated because she couldn’t hit through her with shots that worked great against Osaka and Sabalenka.

Well said.

She also seems like a born competitor and looks fearless on the court.

This is some interesting list of fine tennis players who may not have lived up to the hype. Without much of researching and using only my knowledge, I'd say that there's little parallel in between them and Emma Raducanu. Wozniacki, for instance, has had health issues beyond our (and her own) understanding till she visited a doctor. In a lot of pain, this fine woman had to retire from the sport due to life threatening arthritis. Andresscu's another example of health issues (and COVID setback). The young Canadian player's career, in my humble opinion, would've kicked off quite a bit better otherwise. Moreover on the lack of connection in between Raducanu and the others in the list, I see a strong difference because of Emma's parents that are quite similar in nature to the parents of Venus and Serena Williams rather than those parents of the stars in the list above. Not only that Emma's parents are accountants just like the old Williams father but also strongly supportive of/involved in their daughter's development in the sport. Raduanu's dad's extremely picky on who coaches his girl and mom's the spiritual power behind. So, Raducanus and Williams families are a lot more similar than those ones above. Given that Emma stays healthy which she looks very much and as agressive on the court as she is, there is an amazing future for her in front.

She has compact strokes with decent power and moves much better than 95% of the WTA. So, she has the kind of game where it’s going to be hard to hit through her while she has put-away power to force the issue when she gets short balls. I think she has a bright multi-Slam, consistently top-5 future. Compact strokes with athletic movement is the recipe for playing outstanding defense and when you combine that with enough offensive firepower, you get championship caliber tennis.

Mentally strong, excellent technique, particularly good second serve and the most important thing, she is extremely smart….like MIT smart. She’s here to stay and could dominate over the next 5 years at least.
I have not seen it reported that she got into MIT. Where did you get that she is MIT-smart? Is there a story I missed or are you exaggerating about the mental acumen of a tennis player?

Not all of them but everyone was psyched for swiatek. She has the potential and is no way as terrible as ostapenko but she lost a bit of confidence and it’s affecting her game.
Could be about Swiatek, but that list has too many players.

"On GCSE results day, she emerged with three 9s and four 8s and her parents had to reveal her A-level results over the phone this summer as she was in America. She picked up an A* grade in maths and an A in economics."

I'm not seeing anything saying what her other A-level grades were (so below As then...) and her GCSE results are nothing to get excited about. Smart, but not MIT-smart.

Smart, but not MIT-smart.

No worries. She is intelligent enough to learn from Djokovic how/what to improve once she experience real challenges. No need for MIT level, neither Djokovic has it. Determined stable mind with above average IQ for the envuronment is plenty sufficient.

Which means she will also use her mind to beat superior players. Sit back relax and watch it happen.

It's pretty impressive that no part of her game stood out as a weakness. In fact I'd say that the backhand is relatively very strong and she can hit it with a ton of pace when she sees an opportunity. Forehand is quite good too. Return is excellent. Serve very solid. She barely ever double faults and doesn't offer complete pancakes with the 2nd like many WTA players.

I do think a quicker surface also helped the cleaner ballstrikers rather than the more powerful ones.

Hopefully not. She will definitely get more slam. Her shot is incredible, especially the backhand. Just like when the first time I watch Djokovic, the feeling is the same

Far be it from me to overreact to the win here, but one Slam wonders can only be determined in hindsight.
It's TT. It's more exciting for our esteemed posters to be right about who was a one slam wonder than get excited that maybe we are seeing the beginnings of a great career. Heaven forbid that the latter doesn't happen and somebody quotes you on it.

I did watch the entire first set against Sakkari and when Sakkari did bring her power, it was no avail because Emma was able to keep returning until she turned tables on Sakkari and won the point.

She's too good to win only 1 slam. There are 2 elements in her, and Leylah's, game that are lacking in the other women: mobility, and ability to redirect the ball.

The so-called top women need to lose weight, fast, so they can scooter around the court, like they're teen-agers. Note to the other women: there's a guy about to win his 21st slam, precisely because he can scooter around the court.

We have had mobile players on the WTA but they have usually been the really short ones like Halep. Raducanu is 5 8" and looks taller than that, really. So with her height and relatively broad shoulders, she has more easy power at her disposal than someone like Halep (but combined with great movement). She is what Wozniacki could have been with great strokes.

there seems to be a tendency for the less privileged to handle sudden dramatic success less well. One thinks of some notorious football players from the Brazilian favelas, or your Mike Tysons.

raducanu seems to have the head of a high achiever already, and may not be all too fazed by this rapid breakthrough, unlike certain other athletes who have fallen as quickly as they rose. Success, in some form or another, is probably something she has expected.

Similar thoughts. I watch F1 which, of course, is dominated by rich boyz born with a silver spoon and there's no drama, no nothing, they just keep right on racing. Of course, this bubble of high achievement can backfire too as it did in Bouchard's case. But Raducanu has looked smarter than that so far. At the end of the semi, she cleverly said there was no pressure on paper because she was a qualifier. She knows enough about the game of tennis to respect how tough it is to get it done on the court but is 'privileged' enough to probably not be overwhelmed by the success.

i don’t need to be any kind of a coach to find you placing Kournikova (0 tournament wins, never mind 0 majors) in the same company as Graf, Navratilova, Serena, Hingis etc utterly laughable.

And, you try getting into MIT - it’s far from elitist - you earn your spot regardless of income. Only the smartest get in there.
Kournikova had the best overhead and forehand slice in woman's tennis. Her volleys were worthy of the Top 5. Players frequently ganged up on her in doubles because they didn't like her. And she dealt with competitors lightyears beyond what we're seeing now. Don't let your excitement crowd your judgment.

The second has zilch to do with tennis.

Wta is notorious for one slam wonders in recent times. If Emma stays focused and professional she can maintain it. Whatever Bouchard and Ostapenko did she needs to do the opposite

Well, Ostapenko has only the groundies, and if they're not going in - her movement (non-existent) and her serve (also non-existent) are never going to save her, so Raducanu's got that going for her.

Add to that, Ostapenko's groundies are super-flat so even that is a high risk strategy. Court level views make it clear that Raducanu is certainly not hitting flat and going for broke. The reason she makes so many DTLs is not dumb luck or everything going right but that she gives herself enough net clearance as margin. The question now is whether she (or a coach) will stay the course and keep playing this way or try to make it better and end up tinkering too much with her game.

I could see Raducanu winning the USO a few more times. And Wimbledon will give her a great schedule and the fans will pull for her like you would not believe. You will think Murray was barely encouraged after seeing how they pull for Emma. I am in the UK now and a lot of people I know were watching the match last night- it was shown on live TV at the last minute- and are texting me how much they love Emma! Let's say that never happened with Andy!

The question is less whether Emma can play seven great matches straight - she has answered that with an emphatic yes - and more whether she can play a full schedule and stay fresh, in form and injury free.

Yes. Fresh will be interesting. I think that will depend on her outside commitments. The tennis tour might be even more of a grind if she is doing shoots, meet and greets a lot (she has already done Vogue).
In form. That will go up and down. I guess she'll schedule to peak for the Wimbledon to AO stretch.
Injury free? That is an unknown. However, it seems she has a highly organised and competent team and I know tennis organisations are very set on injury prevention, and that the LTA has made huge strides in this kind of approach.

If you look at her progress, she made it to Britains Fed cup team age 17, theres a video of her practicing with Andy Murray 8 months ago at the National Tennis centre in the UK.

It doesnt look like a random win to me shes got there through hard work, moved up through the system and is rising.

Then it went how I thought it did. Fernandez has, or had, the superior anticipation and willingness to attack. If she loses this edge, it's lights out. She most likely saw Raducanu play and found herself depressed by Raducanu's footwork, which must've hampered her own.
There were many times during the match, especially during the stretches at end of 1st set and middle of 2nd set when Emma pulled away, where Fernandez hit her flat crosscourt backhand, but didn’t recover close enough to the middle after, and she wasn’t fast enough to cover Raducanu’s DTL forehand reply, and so Fernandez was caught stretching to pop up a weak slice sitter.

I'd have my doubts as well if it wasn't for what happened at Wimbledon. The fact that she could come back in the following slam and win it as a qualifier after that shows incredible mental fortitude.

Why should I be bothered by your opinion when you bring up "MIT" and other elitist nonsense? If you've a coaching cert, please post it here. Kournikova was the world #1 juniors player and suddenly was forced to not play any tournaments for months at a time because she was a test subject for the age-based regulations Raducanu is now benefitting from, 25 years later.
Anna Kournikova was very unlucky with injuries too, missing months pretty much every year since her Wimbledon run.

We said the same about these girls. Let's see what happens.

Ostapenko:
Weak serve, won by being super aggressive on returns and going for the lines. Iirc, she placed the majority of her balls within a zone of 50 cm from the lines. She is the poster-women for the one hit wonder. She will never be able to repeat this again imo.

Wozniacki:
She is the ultimate retriever with no offensive weapons. How she managed to steal that slam with her brand of tennis is truly mind-boggling. Her win reminds me of Penetta's and Bartoli's slam wins: they all knew they hit the jackpot and there was no chance of ever repeating it.

Andreescu:
She plays very aggressive from the baseline but is a run-of-the-mill top WTA ball basher. Can possibly be successful again if the overcomes her injury issues. Not sure about her future slam potential.

Swiatek:
Over-reliant on top spin, often ending up hitting the FH late and coughing up short balls. Attackable second serve. Her game is built for clay, even if she's been successful on HC this year. But her insistence on TS makes her too one dimensional and vulnerable imo. Might win more RGs.

Stephens:
Smart player with solid strokes, but falls into the Wozniacki trap imo. Lacks the big weapons, and is not a super aggressive mover. Likes to stay back. Not likely to win a another slam.

Krejcikova:
Smart player with solid strokes, but lacks pace both in her shots and movement. Great volley skills though, so she can cause damage to many draws. Solid win at RG, but not likely to win another slam imo as there are so many great players popping up.

Kenin:
Aggressive and solid, but lacks the big weapons and is not that crafty. Seems like a one hit wonder.

Since Raducanu is thriving on HC, she has two slam opportunities each year. And based on her performance this USO, it's hard not to include her in the handful of favorites for the next HC slams at least. She didn't win by bashing away, she constructed points, and showed a tremendous arsenal of shots and tactics to win her matches, which imo, is only mirrored in the game style of Halep and Barty. But they don't have the same offensive attitude and lack the big weapons from behind the baseline. Now I didn't see Raducanu hitting clean winners from behind the baseline, but she stepped in to take time away and was very aggressive at this, which Halep almost never does, and not really Barty either.
