I was playing doubles, and I thought my partner would take the shot, but his body language said that he wasn't going to budge, so I said "yours", and he got it.

Afterward a guy on the other side said that his tennis guru says that there's no such call as "yours" in tennis.

That struck me as strange. I think I've seen good doubles teams say "yours". Is there any truth to this claim?

As long as you and your partner are communicating effectively, then you can say whatever you want. Why should your opponent dictate what you can and can't say to your partner?

Well that jabroni was wrong. I will call "you" if I'm on my way into the net and the villain throws up a lob at my partner. I say "you" to inform him that I'm not able to cover so he either needs to hit an overhead or turn tail and chase it down.

Regardless of whether I'm "good", if I can't get to a ball I'm going to yell "yours", which is a lot faster than saying "There's no way on God's green earth I'm going to get that ball so you'd better get your a#@ in gear!".

I wonder what your opponent's guru says in that situation? Maybe he plays at a high enough level that such communication is unnecessary. I'd rather err on the side of caution and say something.

Besides, everyone knows that the first person to say "yours" is absolved of all responsibility and it's entirely your partner's fault if you lose the point.

as in he was complaining about noise? people say yours all the time. or "mine". you even see it in the pro doubles.. when say a high lob and both can do an overhead. one will say "yours" or "mine"

I only yell "yours" in desperation if I cannot get a ball that I thought I had a shot at. The opponent who said there is no such call as "your", might have meant that it is a bad habit to get into, its better to be aggressive and yell "mine".

Well, he was being snide. The standard call is "in" or "out". You weren't making a call - but rather providing direction to your partner.

I get the no "yours" thing. It's used on doubles partners you don't trust to know what's going on. Good players still use it. And it is probably annoying to their good partners who already knew it and say, "duh."

In a perfect doubles world, both partners go for questionable shots until one calls off the other.
