Nole's Rise Has Been Spectacular For Tennis

Some of my fellow Nadal fans on this site have been decrying this Wimby as boring because our favorite son has gone out. On the contrary. This would have been an absolute snooze-fest, coronation without Nadal's slayer (at least up to their last three matches). Can you imagine if this was pre-2011 Nole. Actually, you don't have to imagine. Think back to the the great Fedal finals, and ask yourself where was Nole? Where was that consummate #3? I can't even remember when he went out in 2009 AO, Wimby 2008? I can't even remember when he went out in RG or Wimby of 2010? He was an absolute non-factor at the business end of finals. Let's call it his SARS/Anthrax Era.

That was what so absolutely mind-boggling about his USO 2010 win over Fed. Absolutely unexpected. Watch the video of his reaction when Fed misses that last shot--total shock on Nole's face. Unequivocal, total shock that he has actually won one of these huge matches.

No, as a Nadal fan this Wimby has been fine because whether Fed wins of loses there's at least one player left that's not going to roll over and die for him, which to me was what made tennis very boring until Nadal came along, and also what made slams very boring once Nadal went out. Did anyone on God's green Earth think Murray was going to beat Fed in the '08 USO or the 2010 AO, or Soderling beat him in RG '09? Please. When Delpo retires in ten years as a one-slam wonder, we'll look back at Delpo's win as one of the great upsets in slam-final history.

As much pain has Nole has caused Rafa and his fans in the last year, thank goodness for him now.

Tennis will remain somewhat boring and predictable until the "big 3" dominance is broken and other players start to step up more consistently than for (too) few and far between upset(s).

I remember Safin's final stunt by throwing out Novak. In Australia, Nole always struggled with the heat. But you are right that Novak is good for tennis. But not too much Nole. Don't let him be a dominant no. 1. As far as i'm concerned it's time for a renewed roger act to stop it from becoming again a two horse race. As far as tennis is concerned, I think a Jo or Andy win would be good. Rather Jo, because it should be more like 10 people can win a Slam on their fav. surface.

So Novak is an evil, cocky doper (don't think I don't remember your thread on the subject) when he's beating Nadal in big matches but now that he's an obstacle for Fed, thank goodness for him? Could you be any more transparent?

BTW. since you found slams with predetermined winner boring, you must have bored out of your mind for ever FO since 2005, well except for 2009, thank goodness for Soderling!

And thank goodness for Nadal at Wimby in 2008.

Upset yes, but there have been many more bigger upsets. When you look back at Delpo's career, it might look like a huge upset, but at that time, I don't think anyone was too shocked that he beat Federer. He had just completely demolished Nadal like no one else has ever done to Nadal before in a 3 of 5. He had nearly beaten Fed in the French earlier that year. And he had won numberous other tournaments before and after the US Open and looked like he was poised to move up to #1 very soon after this. Unfortunately he had a serious wrist injury and never has been close to that level again.
