Tagore called the Taj a tear drop on the cheek of time. Such is its opulence.
Personally I do think some of the architecture of the grand temples and the intricate design of the pagodas are equally admirable though. Building a Taj required more economic power which the Mughals, leading a country which was contributing to over 16% of the world's GDP had access to. Bringing in artisans from Persia brought in a fascinating mix of styles.
I was in Kanchi this weekend visiting a few of the hundred odd temples here. The architecture back from the 7th and 8th centuries are simply magnificent. The size....the sheer size!
