Ok, since his triumph at the Olympics and Flushing Meadows the board's been filled to the brim with conversation about him. Some complimentary, some less so. So I felt the irrational urge to put it all to an opinion poll to sum up the forum's feeling as well as I could.

The options provided are by no means exhaustive, so choose the closest.

He is installed in the Big 4. Deserves the respect he gets, never had it easy and now has pulled it out the bag.

However, Federer's 'exhausted', Nadal hasn't played a match in 4-5 months and Djokovic plays either hot or cold....so it must be the big 1?

This made me laugh. lol

I don't think it's fair for me to comment on this, because I'm his fan and naturally biased...

Well he's graduated from a slamless pusher to a one-slam wonder. So that's some improvement there.

J/k. He's officially a slam contender now and the big 4 is official. Infact, I predict Murray to lead that pack of 4 in the coming years while Fed slowly but surely drops out.

I always considered him apart of the big 4, but now it's official.

I have to say I didn't. As much as I supported him tirelessly the past 10 years, it always seemed to me he would not be able to overcome Fed, Nadal or Djokovic in the big events be they Slams or Olympics. He had the ability but didn't have the mental strength.

Now he has. And add that to his ability and he has been promoted.

I've even heard it said that he and Djokovic will dominate the finals for the next few years.

It has become a big 4 but he is still the 4th in my mind

Disagree.

You've got Nadal out indefinately with declining physical condition (tendonitis ETC.), Federer stating that he is breaking down physically and unsure of the remainder of his schedule for 2012, Nole running out of gas and cramping in 5th set US Open.

To me: Andy Murray is currently the top player in the world (in terms of momentum and results) on the heels of a Wimbledon Final, Olympic Gold, and US Open Trophy. This isn't hype or guess work, Murray should be considered the clear favorite going into the Asian swing and World Tour Final - Australian Open. Murray may hit #1 in world ranking sooner than previously suggested.

Got to admit, I do agree with you Bob.

Add to that Djoker not actually winning a slam since Australia, losing 2 finals and failing to make the other. He's not out of it by any means but the machine which won 3 in a row is gone. tbh his level during that period was staggering - unsustainable.

Like you say, Nadal's position is unknown - all he can do at the moment is advertise poker sites. Whether he comes back at all is in doubt, never mind this year.

And Federer is simply coming to the end of his career. He'll still be about but his performances in the slams this year have been a symptom of the natural and slow expiry of his career life-cycle.

Like you say, for raw ability and pure tennis genius Murray might not *quite* be as good as the big 3, but for momentum, mental strength, form and current success rate he has their number big time.

World number 1? Quite possible and would be very nice.

You can quote me on this but all poll options are derogatory towards Andy Murray.

OP forgot the:

he only converses in agitated tones with inanimate objects, swears and shouts Come On on forced/unforced errors, clutches thighs, beats off form opponents and uses the wind to his advantage

option.

We had fake Fed fans, fake Nadal fans and fake Djokovic fans. This can only mean Murray's success is as real as can be. Now there are fake Murray fans :)

Fedex: I think you're a Murray fan and are thus only being humerous here but I do wish to bring up a few mute points since you mentioned them and some may not be aware that you're a fan.

You mentioned "beats off form opponents and uses the wind to his advantage". Aren't these attributes that would suggest Andy is improving? In fact, don't these show that he is out-playing players that should also be able to find a way to win in adverse conditions?

Andy is getting it done in all conditions and I know you appreciate his achievment :)

Did the opponent play bad or did Andy Murray play well?
That is the question.
Did Andy Murray play well and make the opponent look bad or did the opponent play bad and make Andy Murray look good?

And I was so delighted that Murray won the slam and the manner of it that I was too stunned to be delighted.

It's still hasn't sunk in that a Brit, no less, a Scot. A Scottish person of all nationalities. From this once proud, strong country full of great warriors but now the most unhealthy nation on the planet.

Land of the mince pie, fish supper and deep fried mars bar, land of rubbish football even though it's our national sport, land of nobody tennis players, bad weather and no facilities.

This most unlikely of unlikely countries has produced a world class tennis player of unimaginable talent and potential, already winner of 8 Masters titles, Wimbledon finalist, Olympic Gold medalist, slam champion and slayer of the greatest player to lift a racket.

How in heaven's name did this freak occurrence happen?

I would say this applies much more to Novak than Murray. GB produced lots of OG medals in the past and male and female tennis players.
Serbia had zero players, zero player develpment money, zero medals (in comparison) zero tennis facilities (this could change) and Novak has 12? MS, YEC, 5 GS, 1 Olympic medal, 1 Davis cup. This is even more freaky than Murrray's result.

Fair shout mate. When you consider that you've got 1 other player in the top 10 and another in the top 30, then it looks even more crazy mental!

Not freaky at all.
Yugoslavia as in (Croatia and Serbia) has always been a great sporting nation.
Look at the great football teams of the past and present, and the number of top tennis players.
Croatia and Serbia are inherently sporting nations.
Scotland, traditionally, is not. Certainly not in tennis terms anyway.

But neither was Serbia mate - I can think of Goran and Nicki Pilic from Yugoslavia and they were both Croats. And that's before we consider the infrastructure challenges Serbia faced post 1995 (I'm trying to be as diplomatic as possible here).

Good points guys. Keep in mind: Novac and Andy are both examples of players who showed potential and then were lucky enough to have had people who saw the potential and knew that they needed world class coaching in order to further develope.

Germany and Spain are where the real development occured (respectively) for these two. Obviously these countries have no shortage of results on their player development resume's.

I think this shows us that tennis has truly become an international effort and most of the top players have been afforded International assistance in their develpoment, (money, coaching, exposure ETC)

I'm from the U.S and take great pride in the tennis legacy. Here in the U.S it's the same however: if a player (living rurally) with potential wants to develope (even into an division 1 player) they often get farmed out to tennis Mecca's like Florida or Southern California. International level players are the same.

Did you say "deep fried Mars bars". Did you actually say that ?

Is there really such a thing or were you trying to make us gag :)

Not one of the other guys has had to overcome the pressure that he has. While his wins alone do not stand out among the other 3, overcoming that kind of pressure makes his achievements this year special.

Deep fried in batter. No - he's not kidding. We also deep fry pies - and pizzas.

Mars saying deep frying their product goes against the morals of the Mars company because it's unhealthy!
You've really got to laugh.
And exactly what are the morals of the Mars company?

"A Mars a day helps you work, rest and play.
It's the goodness of milk, sugar, glucose and thick thick chocolate..."

That's right. In the form of thick, dense, tooth clinging guey toffee surrounded in chocolate.

To paraphrase Stewart Lee, the morals of the Mars company are to sell chocolate, make profit, sell more chocolate pretending it's milk with a little bit of healthy energy giving sugar with an innocent touch of chocolate. Make expensive adverts showing Mars is a health product. Sell even more Mars...

I agree with you Murray has had far more pressure.
Don't know how he managed to hold his technique together knowing how damaging another slam final loss would be.

Um....good that you are stunned! Britain tennis system didn't produce Murray. It was Spain...thank Rafa and the Spanish Clay kingdom. If Murray stayed in Britain....he would be a guy floating the 300's.

The only great talent that Britain produced are on the girls side and the junior boys look well.

He's won one slam by age 25. Good for him. I'm happy for him, but there is nothing historic about it. Nadal and Fed are obviously all-time greats, and Djoker will likely end his career as one. Murray has significant work to do to be mentioned in the same company.

Well, it's historic for British tennis. Other than that, who's saying it is?

Surely you realise there's exaggeration for dramatic effect in what I said?

Sounds like your mum didn't tell you any stories?
