I cannot imagine Federer playing through this and then after that, with people all the time pointing this out. If Fed announces retirement after Nadal's 19th Slam in January 2019, it will be perceived as an obvious copout. That means in reality Fed just has till the end of this year to announce his retirement, hopefully due to an injury excuse, in order to be able to say that he could have won more Slams but retired due to injury before that.

I would expect the announcement to come around the time of the Basel tournament.

Nadal isn't winning the Open, nor is he winning Australia next year, he's won it exactly once, 10 years ago. He may not win the French.
