An interesting situation happened today in the aftermath of Opelka's win over Lorenzo Musetti yesterday. Opelka arrived at the court with a pink bag that appeared to violate one of the event rules. The rule states that additional equipment such as bags can't have logos that exceeded the limit of four inches.

The bag Opelka brought with him to the court had logos that was larger than that which violated the rule. In response, US Open issued Opelka a 10,000 $ fine calling the reason an 'unapproved bag'. The fine is a large one considering the reason but it officially violates the rule in place so it's justified.

I don't think the OP is "assuming that". What I see is a surprising $10,000 punishment. Then, I really don't believe Opelka is unaware of the rule for he has played in the youth ITF tournaments before where standards on this issue aren't much different.

I wondered about that too. I recall Martina Navratilova's return to Wimbledon when she was....i think in her late 40s. When she stepped on the court to play in her own branded clothes, I think the authorities made her change. There was no fine to Martina then. But I guess when the logo on something isn't obvious and noticed only later during the match, a bitter call to punish financially comes later too.

Wilson, Babolat, Yonex, TF, etc help pay for professional events. They make rules that allow them to advertise their products. I'm fairly certain that McEnroe never wore a Stanford T-shirt to a professional match. He would have been fined. If tournaments want sponsor money, they have to enforce contracts that allow only approved (stuff sold by sponsors) things to show up on the courts.
