Perhaps excessive

An interesting situation happened today in the aftermath of Opelka's win over Lorenzo Musetti yesterday. Opelka arrived at the court with a pink bag that appeared to violate one of the event rules. The rule states that additional equipment such as bags can't have logos that exceeded the limit of four inches.

The bag Opelka brought with him to the court had logos that was larger than that which violated the rule. In response, US Open issued Opelka a 10,000 $ fine calling the reason an 'unapproved bag'. The fine is a large one considering the reason but it officially violates the rule in place so it's justified.

You are assuming that Mr. Opelka knows the event rules. Odds are he does not. A member of his coaching staff or the event organizers should have warned him before he walked on the court with it.

So what is to stop an official checking and stopping the bags at the entrance to the court?

But how could they claw back 10k if they did that?

Seems a little excessive compared to the $100,000 Serena was fined for threatening to kill a line judge.

wait...so a bag made by Wilson says Wilson on it and he got fined 10K for that? What idiot made up that rule? And what bigger idiot thought it was a good idea to enforce it?
As a covid patient just having my breakfast at 08:20 Iran time, you made my day, thanks(y)
Reading your post made me breaking up

I don't think the OP is "assuming that". What I see is a surprising $10,000 punishment. Then, I really don't believe Opelka is unaware of the rule for he has played in the youth ITF tournaments before where standards on this issue aren't much different.

Fining him $10k for that is insanely stupid.
I'd say it's an uttermost arrogance from the powers.

Bely bely shocking. Not a good example for the kids, this guy is a danger to society.
Youth tennis players get constantly hassled for what they wear/use when playing. This is the advertising (money) jungle we are living in. Truly sad for our society.

Poor Opelka still stuck with all those 2018 Pro Staff paint jobs.

Yet every pro sponsored it without any questions unlike Federer who pretended that the white colour affected his "timing"of his shots even though they designed it for him lol.

On topic, sucks that Opelka has this bizarre fine. I am sure himself and his team will learn a valuable lesson in regards to this situation.

Opelka gets fined $10,000 for a completely bogus reason, while Cheaterpas suffers no consequences for his texting breaks.

Nobody could see the brand name of the cell phone Tsitsi used in his crapper. Anyhow, cellphones usually have smaller than that 4 inch logo on; and, I suspect the cell Tsitsi uses is fully authorized by the sponsored company :)

Couldn't they have just requested he remove the offending bag and given him a warning. Maybe impose the fine only if he repeat offends?

I wondered about that too. I recall Martina Navratilova's return to Wimbledon when she was....i think in her late 40s. When she stepped on the court to play in her own branded clothes, I think the authorities made her change. There was no fine to Martina then. But I guess when the logo on something isn't obvious and noticed only later during the match, a bitter call to punish financially comes later too.

Didn't I just see Shelby Rogers walk off the court with the exact same bag with a 2 foot long Wilson logo? Will she get fined too?

Wilson, Babolat, Yonex, TF, etc help pay for professional events. They make rules that allow them to advertise their products. I'm fairly certain that McEnroe never wore a Stanford T-shirt to a professional match. He would have been fined. If tournaments want sponsor money, they have to enforce contracts that allow only approved (stuff sold by sponsors) things to show up on the courts.

pretty sure fining him only drew more attention to whatever logo was on there, which makes the excessive fine even more ridiculous and counterproductive.
