nadal - can get overpowered occasionally by the biggest servers in the world, but just manages a way to return a few serves in a game to break, not amazing at getting back huge serves in a position to attack, but has a great record over big servers. REGARDLESS OF THE SURFACE.

federer - block big serves back, or other good serves (accurate and kickers), but is lucky that the likes of roddick can't volley good. Good at getting the ball back, but not amazing at getting them back in good positions.

Murray, probably the best mix of the block serve and positioning on serve. don't really watch the guy to know.

djokovic - Can get some big serves back in good positions to keep himself in the rally, record against the best servers isn't outstanding

Murray and Djok

Nadal's return is maybe the weakest side of his game. There is a large body of evidence to suggest he can crumble under pressure, especially on thef orehand side

Fed' return is too predictable

Actually, I'll go with djoker on this one....he's definitely the most aggressive on return, Agassi like....murray and fed just tend to push their returns, Rafa has never had a great return of serve.

Murray is the best returner in the world today IMO. As far as the top 4, Fed is a close 2nd, but he's having trouble today with the returns. A few years back he was the best returner on tour.

murray, or maybe nadal.

federer plays much too passive on his returns, usually slicing and blocking back backhand returns and rarely going over the ball.

Murray hands down IMO.

I think Fed is better than Novak in neutralizing big serves and better defensive returner but Novak is a better agressive returner(can really pummel those 2nd serves)than Fed.

but federer somehow deals with the best servers comfortably, for example, roddick, federer seems to block his serve back, but djokovic and nadal struggle for the break. just my opinion

Eh, delete.

I don't want to start a flame war. We all know Federer could cure cancer, AIDS, get rid of world-wide poverty and N_F would still not give him credit for anything.

Murray is winning a doing something best poll on these forums!!!

Have most of you accidently voted for the wrong person???

It's really about time he had some credit around here, I'm impressed:)

Murray. It's not all that close either. It's probably the best part of his game, along with his backhand. He was miles ahead of the field in return stats too until the clay court season kicked in, where return is nowhere near as important.

no its fact, roddick is able to outserve djokovic and nadal and hit coutless aces and service winners against them, but against federer, his serve becomes a shot, not a weapon

Murray returns Roddick's serve just as well if not better. He is also the only player who can consistently break Karlovic. He has broken Ivo 8 times in the last 5 sets they have played.

From the 2008 statistics, Nadal was considered the king of returning serve.

That's because of his clay court results. Nadal is a solid returner, but it's not one of his main strengths. On clay, return is less important because of how slow the surface is. Nadal's returning stats were bolstered by his exceptional statistics on return on clay, which have more to do with how well he rallies on clay.

Murray can step in on backhand returns 'Agassi-like'...I recall him breaking Karlovic twice in their last meeting on hadcourt. Something which rarely happens to the Karlovic serve.

He broke Karlovic 4 times the last time they played on hard, in the Cinci semi-final. He broke him twice in each set.

He also broke Karlovic four times the time before that, too. That was in IW 2008.

And the time before that he broke him 3 times. That was in the San Jose 2007 final. Murray has broken Karlovic 11 times in 3 matches.

Great, logical, and sensible post. They way you put it makes it all clear. Thanks for the information.

1.Murray- great at neutralisng big first serves and steps in to punish weak second serves.
2.Djokovic- very good at punishing weak serves.
3.Nadal- Gets almost every serve back into play and can be aggressive on the second serve.
4.Federer-Good at at neutralising big first serves but is predictable and not agressive enough.

Well if even you go with Murray first than it must be Murray since I know you are the furthest thing from a Murray fan, LOL!

I'd go for Nadal.

Nadal is probably the only guy on tour who managed to give Karlovic a breadstick on an indoor carpet.

I'm a Nadal fan, but I'd still go with Murray on this one, he is more consistent. I believe Murray returns even better than Hewitt or Nalbandian.

I'd say Murray. Btw, the poll shows how ridiculous it is that so many Fed fans are deluded. I mean, Fed has more votes than Nadal? WTF? Ok, maybe when Fed was in his prime, he'd be on par or even better than Nadal now, but no joking, I think Fed's returns right now are the poorest out of the big 4.

Well, it is something of a miracle that he managed to break Karlovic, twice! By the way I think Murray has the best return in the game.
