Doing the p90x workout for these colder months as cross training. Also swimming in an indoor pool to keep the cardio up and with the freestyle stroke gives good stretch and body extension (mimics a serve kinda)

Finished week 2 of P90x.

Hi,
How do you feel? Do you think it is working? would you reccomend it?

I just finished week 2. Starting to see results.
Its a very good and organized workout. No heavy lifting. I sub the pushups with the bench press at the gym.
A sample of a week goes like this:
Mon: Chest, Back, Abs
Tues: Cardio
Wed: Arms, Shoulders, Abs
Thurs: Cardio
Fri: Legs, Back, Abs
Sat: Cardio
Sun: Rest

The leg workout is very GOOD and would develop explosiveness on the courts.
Since your working out different body parts through the whole week, it gives ample time for it to recover. I say its very efficient workout plan. I dont follow its nutrition plan. I love food too much to restrict myself on what I eat:)
For cardio, I swim around 1000 meters. Working on getting more.
It's good cross training especially with the colder months coming in and you can't play indoors.

I just recently sprained my wrist. going to have to hold back on the workout for a bit though..

its very good, i'm on week 4, but i went through week 7 before straining my shoulder. I have to lose some weight before my wedding and i've dropped 12 lbs with it in 2 weeks so far.

Only after 2 weeks i've dropped about 7-10lbs. I dont think I'm going to lose anymore since i'm at my target weight of 165.

Nice schedule, tanh3. When do you find time to play tennis? I'm assuming that you are not playing on the day you workout, which could possibly be a bad assumption on my part.

Tough workout

This workout is not easy. You have to be in fairly good shape to complete the exercises correctly. I've worked through the power 90 and that is a piece of cake compared to the 90X.

As far as P90x and tennis go, I'd have to say the PlyoX sessions are insanely useful for us tennis players.

Yoga also took me by surprise. You work and sweat a lot from a one-hour session... mad props to those who have the discipline to do it on a daily basis.

I made it through 3 weeks and then realized it leaves me too soar for tennis so I stopped and once this season comes to an end I will start again. Very effective in the weeks that I did.

im thinkin about trying this once my current gym membership expires in january, i've seen some of the videos and it looks pretty intense, cheaper than my gym though so worth a shot

I know tennis players dont really go for size, but they have options as far as the programs...you can do lean and now build as much muscle and go for a lean/tone body. But here is a recent example of what 90 days can do...this is right off the forum and its really inspiring.

i haven't been doing p90x but have been doing this routine: (been working so far too)

jog 1.25 miles, (started out w/1 mile and increase 0.5 miles each day on incline 10 or above the entire time)

then alternate days on weights, upper body and lower body, and ab exercises on the ab machine every day

I've been at it for 7 days straight so far (and eating healthy) and gonna see what happens in a month, if this doesn't work i'm gna do p90x :)

p90x is great, and results come fast if u do the workouts correctly, just dont try to do more weight than u should...did that and got pretty swoll but was crazy sore and tight

The level of sore that you get from P90 can not even be explained. I have never been so beat down. I also play tennis on top of the program, in the end this can only help your game.

1 question not relating to p90x, is running (or brisk walking) on a high incline on the treadmill bad for your knees?

The Yoga is tough. I do not always finish it since it is like an hour and a half. The weird part about it is how much you sweat while holding those poses. I am not a big yoga fan so I just try my best to make it through the video. After you do it a couple times though you know the positions so then you do not have to try and look at the screen and hold your pose. You just need to move past it and keep going through the exercises.

I don't see how it would be any different than running or brisk walking up a hill. Many treadmills have settings so you can change the hardness of your surface and get less pounding on your knees. I usually set those to the max although it can feel spongy when you are on it.

Obviously if your knees start hurting I would stop. If you have bad knees to begin with walking would be a lot less stress than running on them . Alternatives would be to use a stepper or increase the resistance on an elliptical.

I don't know if the incline will put more stress on the knees compared to a horizontal surface. However the achilles tendon and calf muscles will be extended more than compared to running on a horizontal surface.

I seem to recall someone saying calf raises on a raised step whereby the heel dropped below the level of the step was bad because it hyper-extended(over-stretched) the achilles tendon and calf muscles.

i'm toning it down to 4.5 incline, i have never had knee pain but my right knee felt a bit sore and after the run tonight it doesn't hurt at all. I think it also depends on the person too.

btw is p90x mainly aerobic exercise?

From what I know of it, no. I've not done the program, only used my friend's P90X pull up apparatus which I love. This is definitely a muscle-building program, focusing on resistance training but including stretching and plyometrics.

I just like that pull up bar it comes with. It works like a charm and you don't have to screw anything in.

Guys was reading this thread yesterday, and downloaded and tried the plyometrics session..... Man, what a workout! There were bits I was comfortable with, and bits that were so tough. But I managed to get through it all, and now looking forward to doing another plyo session tomorrow.

Good job!
Jumping squats killed me! but man its worth it. more explosiveness on the court.

I know, I played tennis later on that night and could feel a little more explosive. However after the plyo session, I did 45mins of cycling too, and that kinda left me a little jaded.

Can't wait to test this explosiveness fully on the court Sunday morning :)

Only a little increase in explosiveness. But I really think you won't see full results until you do a couple of sessions and have at least 1 day of recovery. That's why I can't until Sunday morning tennis, after my recovery from my program.
