Picking up balls left on the court

I was playing with a friend just for fun and he stopped between my 1st and 2nd serve to complain that the guy in court behind us and over a few courts was picking up balls and putting them in his bag. I was kind of taken back and just kind of ignored him. Then the guy went to pick up balls left on the court directly behind us and my friend yells out at him that those aren't his. The guy said "are these yours?" and hit them over to us. My friend just hit them to the side and we never used them.

When we finished playing I went to pick up the balls and he said something like "are you sure you want them? Why not just leave them here?" I told him I might use them for serve practice or something later.

Am I missing something about the etiquette here? The other courts were completely empty. Who cares if the guy picks up the old balls? Is there some kind of ball sharing thing you're supposed to do?

If the guy is picking up old balls that the previous court occupants left behind, then I don't see a problem with that. Unless he's intruding onto your court in the middle of your session or something.

Maybe he has intimate knowledge of what type of balls the club provides the pros for lessons and what they put in the ball machine and knows they were not those. Any type of tennis equipment left on club courts I’d probably leave alone.

Maybe collecting them because there is a shortage. That is what The Suresh said he was doing.

Yes I scavenge balls in order to reuse them before they are recycled in order to protect Nature.

Recall we picked up balls left behind after HS matches. I also left balls on a public court. Discovered Diadem balls that way. Had three corny kegs back then too. Prior to Cyrus

That's what I'm wondering as well. I was surprised he'd stop me between serves for that. I was just thinking "so what?" the whole time.
