Playoff Line Up / What Would You do?

We made playoffs and me and the captain are new. We been on teams before but never had to make
the hard choices we now face. I just want to gauge what is the best way to decide a line up
order. We just need 2 out of 3 courts to win.

Do you stack like points are involved or do you mix it up? Numbers in a hat could be our best bet lol.

I put my best crew on 1, next best on 2. Don't suddenly try new combinations. Play together the duos that have been most successful thru the season.

Never really got the stacking thing unless you really don't have confidence in your team I guess.

If there are just 3 courts, and especially if it is a plus league where 5.0s/5.5s have to play court 1, there is usually little juggling to do.

But if it is a 5 court match, teams do generally have trends that can be used against them to get the match-ups you want that will maximize your chances of a team win. Good captains will juggle things during the regular season to keep these trends from being apparent, but a lot do have tendencies that can be revealed. Of course a great way to reveal them is with my reports, and yes, while they aren't proven to be right/predictive all the time, they are quite often and teams have advanced farther than perhaps they should have, including winning Nationals, by using them.

Look at your opponents, if they always play their strongest team at 1 and you don't have confidence that your 1 can beat their 1 you can roll once.

that means you put your 3rd best team at line 1, 1st team at line 2 and 2nd team at line 3.

you basically sacrifice line 1 in an effort to gain an advantage in lines 2 and 3.

If you think they may roll their lines you can double roll .. 2nd best at 1 3rd best at 2 and best at 3 in an attempt to outstack them.

it's always a gamble if the other team doesn't play it straight up, because then it's a guessing game.

do the combinations that won before and you know that they play well together with. don't try new teams no matter how tempting.

I agree with above on not attempting new duos ... use the ones that worked in the season.

If you know which team you are playing ahead of time (sometimes you don't it's revelaed at the playoff), do your research and see how they put their lineups out all season, or for the "must-win" matches. Was their court strength straight forward? Did they stack?
I like ocassionally switching courts 1 and 2 in either singles or dubs. I will not put 3 up in court 1 because my team is lacking a depth and that would be uncool.

I captained for many years, and there is just no good answer. You can't know whom the other team will play, at what line, and how their strengths/weaknesses work with yours.

That said, what I would do is set expectations early and then switch it up later. So round one, play according to strength. Round two, play according to strength. Once you reach the semis or finals, switch it up and stack.

My other rule is that I avoided having singles players play more than one match a day. A weaker singles player is a better bet than a strong singles player who already played once that day (unless she had a super-easy match, which rarely happens in playoffs).

My last piece of advice is to take it easy. I don't think it works well to put a lot of pressure on your players. Those who are already competitive people and fired up do not need you to fire them up. The ones who get nervous and tight will get nervous and tight if you try to fire them up.

And if you don't know your players well, ask them if any don't appreciate having teammates watching them play. I had some ladies who would get tight if friends watched them. I don't get it, but that's how they were so I would not go watch their matches.

Play the best line in 1 as noted above, if that's what you usually do. It's tennis. Don't overthink it.

My wife and me played on a mixed team that perpetually won the league but faltered in districts and then totally collapsed in Sectionals. It was ritualistic. The 'brains' behind the lineups used charts, graphs and a slide rule in calculating the invincible, winning lineups...that lady is still Captain today....
