Why This Is Important

This petition aims to safeguard the integrity of the 2011 Animal Welfare Act that will protect all animals in the country from cruelty, suffering and abuse. The Animal Welfare Board of India’s Draft Animal Welfare Act of 2011 aims to do just this.

But vested interests from within the government, seem intent on derailing this bill by dropping several key sections which will result in enabling unimaginable pain and suffering for millions of animals, especially farm animals meant for slaughter and animals selected for animal-based research.

There are also blanket powers for the destruction of animals which have been included. In a blatant and shocking move, intended to please the meat and pharmaceutical lobbies the sections protecting these animals have been dropped or altered, without justification.

Please urge the Government of India to protect the rights and lives of millions of animals by passing and implementing a strong and adequate Animal Welfare Act in accordance with the AWBI’s recommendations.

I need to know specifics.

What does the bill state currently. Are you allowed to use animals to plow fields. After they are done plowing do you have to shelter them inside instead of letting them graze in a field.

I wouldnt knwo what it was I was siging a petition for. maybe the current bill is too strict and needs to be lessened in which case I couldnt sign this petition.

How do they have to slaughter animals now? Does the bill just let them use the metal spike through the brain technique or a bell gun? Both of those cause less pain and suffereing than suffocating them to death in a gag chamber or by lethal injection.

I would rather a drug be tested on an animal with a 5 year lifespan than a human being.

I just dont know enough details to blantly sign a online petition created by a guy who has created what seems like 100 petitions.

Signed it a few days ago. One would expect something a little different in a country like India, considering religious traditions :?

I think I am not understanding the bill completely. before we sign the petition, have we considered their culture, are there economic impact, polticial implications, etc?
why are we minding the business of a prosperous country half a world away if we can't even get our act together?
just a thought.

I read the letter and there is not a whole lot of context there.

Its too general for me to know what going on.

What is a humane way to slaughter an animal. A gun shot to the head is the least painful. But I'm pretty sure that wont be allowed under this current or proposed law. Either way I dont know.

I'm not going to sign a petition when the only thing that is stated is to stop letting cows graze on trash on the side of the road. Pass a law to clean the trash up. But I guess that trash is there for humans to sleep on. No need for a animal welfare board to tell someone to pick up trash so its not laying on the ground.

This is not a very well written petition. Too vague and biased. Any government would throw this in trash on the side of the road to let a cow eat it.

If that your country "can't get its act together" and that the animals in need are far away is an excuse for you not to care about their suffering enough as to just click on an online petition...

I don't know how helpful these petitions really are but here's one on getting China to stop its tiger trade. I have read a ouple years back that some of India's Tiger sanctuaries actually have 0 tigers left although they claim a thousand or more.

www.bantigertrade.com

I’ve just spent a few seconds signing up to a vital petition that will help save the last 3,200 wild tigers on earth. Will you help the cause by doing the same?

When I first heard that there are only 3,200 wild tigers left, I was totally shocked. To put it in perspective, it means that all the wild tigers left on earth could all fit on just one soccer pitch. Added to this, we are losing them to poachers at a rate that means they will become extinct within a very few years.

The TigerTime campaign team need your help to save them.

The Chinese trade in tiger parts is one of the most serious threats to the wild tiger. The Chinese government says that it is committed to saving the wild tiger. However, it is continuing to allow the trade in tiger parts and skins from tigers bred in so called ‘tiger farms’. We think that the practice of ‘farming tigers’ is barbaric and should be stopped. Additionally, this trade is the perfect smokescreen for the continued poaching of wild tigers.

Please, urge others to sign our petition at www.bantigertrade.com and pass this request on to as many people as they can by forwarding this email. China is a powerful country so we need as many signatures as possible to make them listen.

Very Kind regards

TigerTime Team

The lady who forwarded these 2 links to me is a Scottish lady who does a lot of work in getting stray dogs neutered and vaccinated in my city. I see her frequently at the shelter. I just got this very saddening email from her (forwarded).
Just FYI: On February 18th, there will be a huge demonstration at Srinagar aganist the stray dogs and the SMC. It is organized by the Valley Citizans Council (VCC) and most large trade associations, shop keepers, transporters, and tourism groups have agreed to participate in addition to ordinary people.

They will be demanding the culling/ poisoning of dogs. What to do?

This is one of our(the USA) biggest faults. As a country on a whole we are oblivious to other cultures and we need to learn to mind our own business...

Signed them both.

There are regions on the US that are suffering from a similar problem with stray dogs. This is not just a India problem.

Neutering seems like the best and most "human" long term measure to combat the issue.

The Tiger petition also does tackle the core of the problem.

China is the biggest market of Tiger trading parts. They are used on medicine, culinary and several other shameful applications. Their pelt is by far not their only demanded asset.

The poaching that happens on wild Tigers is due to this layer in the system. As if farmed Tigers weren't already terrible enough, this practice encourages and opens space to a "higher quality" demand market (the "real deal") that goes for the remaining wild Tigers that still exist in the world.

No main market = severely less action from poachers which directly helps in the conservation of the Tiger species.

It's really serious, poachers are decimating all the existing wild Tiger life that still remains in this world. The Sariska Tiger reserve, one of India's biggest Tiger reserves, lost all its Tigers around 2004-2005 due to mainly poaching.

The point of clicking on an online petition is not means to interfer with another country's jurisdiction? India, like many hyper growth nations, is going through it's own cultural and economic transformation. Why, as an outsider, are meddling with their evolution? Just let them grow and learn. We, as Americans, have to stop policing everything.

I am going to stop looking at this thread and get back to tennis. =)

One of the guys who was either heading a reserve or one of their scientists came out with what was happening there and had life threats.

They were boasting of 1500 or 2000 tigers but none had been spotted for over a year, and there were no paw marks. Finally, some other agency came in and found that there were zero. The reserve was obviously in cahoots with the traders.

Seems one of the traders got linked with Tibet were a few affluent people liked to wear tiger skin for some of their ceremonies. Other links were to Chinese aphrodisiacs and medicines.

I remember that episode. Yeah, it was really sad.

Then the Dalai lama came forward with an appeal to stop the illegal trading and lots of Tibetan people burned or got rid of their skins.

It was a good sign.

The chinese market has to be defused for the Tiger to have any hope.
