Pro Bernie Tomic dropped 11lbs in a week - why can't I?

During the Brisbane tournament, commentators made mention of Tomic's weight, specifically the excess flab around his stomach. A week later by the time he got to Melbourne he had lost 5kgs / 11lbs.

How does a guy drop 5kgs that quickly? It took me months. I've cut sugar, do high intensity interval sprints 4x week and can't shed more than 0.5kg per week.

I heard that there are two types of stomach fat: visceral and subcutaneous. The subcutaneous (near the skin surface) is much more difficult to lose than the deep visceral fat. So I doubt he lost subcutaneous fat that quickly. Maybe he lost visceral fat. Or maybe it was mostly water weight loss, i.e. he switched to a healthy diet that led to the loss of excess unhealthy water weight.

Water weight. And what T1000 said. It's simple - calories in, calories out. Working out/exercising doesn't burn that many calories. It has more to do with simply eating less.

Are you sure he didn't lose all that weight only in his mind?

The guy can move up 10 places in ranking in just a few days in his mind.

Thanks for your replies everyone.
I guess my next question is how do you lose that much water weight? and is that a good thing?
Sorry I'm a weight loss and fitness novice genuinely curious about this. All your advice above resonates with me right now as I am very conscious of the whole calories in/out thing and as I type I feel guilty for wolfing down a Mars Bar for dessert after a virtuous day without bread/pasta/carbs

The whole point of losing water weight is to make a certain weight class usually for combat or strength sports. You would only do this if the weigh in is 24 hours before the contest because you won't have enough time to put the weight back on and rehydrate. It's temporary weight loss you will always put the weight back on you're not losing any actual mass.

A very basic way is to load up on double the usual amount of sodium and water for a couple days then 24 hours before the weigh in cut out all water and sodium consumption. Your body will then get rid of more water than it needs to. This will cut anywhere from 8-12 lbs usually. There are more tricks to force water out but if you don't know what you're doing then you'll hurt yourself so not gonna get into them.

As I said earlier if you're losing 0.5 kg or 1 lb per week then you're on the right track. body composition changes are a marathon not a sprint so be patient. There are no safe and healthy shortcuts

He lost water weight. I've cut up to 20 lbs over 7 days before to make a weight class. losing 0.5 kg a week is a good progress for a cut where you're trying to lose fat so keep up whatever you're doing. Anything more isn't really healthy

Yep, if the conditions are right (very hot and humid) it's not uncommon to lose 10+ pounds per day if you are doing enough. I went from 170 to a shade under 160 (159.6) in a span of about 12 hours just by jumping on the bike for 90ish minutes and then playing tennis for about 2 hours. This was a Summer night in Houston though, so yeah it was mostly water weight, but still it is possible. :D

Ehh if you do intense cardio-based exercise for long periods daily, you can burn quite a bit, but not 11 lbs in a week level.

Why must you initially load up on sodium? Doesn't that cause water retention?
Likewise, why the loading up of water to lose water weight?

Diet is a part but I don't see how exercise would be inefficient-- the healthiest people are those that exercise a ton, while also eating right.

Cardio is extremely healthy of course. But lifting and or intensity training is better for losing weight imo.

You want to increase the amount of water in your body to stimulate the hormone that regulates water retention so when you suddenly cut water and sodium you will get rid of more than necessary. This is what causes the huge weight cut in 7-10 days.

I see. So the 20 pounds was a net loss after 10 days. It was probably even more than that, since you were actually gaining water weight in the early days.

Diet is much more than a part. It's probably 90% of losing weight. All the calories you burn running for a half hour can be more than covered by just eating a single bagle, or drinking a soda, or two pieces of bread. Working out is a small part of losing weight compared to diet.

But lifting burns fewer calories than sustained cardio does per hour

Also not necessarily true. I wish I remembered where I first read it, but this sums up the same kind've research.
