pro stringing

Does anyone know wheather most pros, ie. Roddick and Coria, have natural gut in the mains and synthetic in the crosses or the reverse or something else?

I believe the two you listed use polyester. I think Roddick uses Babolat poly and I'm fairly certain Coria uses Luxilon Original. Currently, about half or better of the top 50 use polyester.

why do they use poly? Is that because it is harder to pop a string then it is with synthetic? But they definitely use natural gut on the mains right?

As far as I know Coria uses Luxilon Big Banger without any kind of hybird stringing. Tennisfan4, some players prefer the feel of polys. Some like the durability. Some think (at least with the Luxilon) it gives them better spin.

I just recently tried a hybrid string job and it lasted two days. I went back to using Big Banger. I like a really stiff string bed, and I did not see any benefit of using a hybrid string job. I heard it talked about so much on these boards I just had to try it. However, it wasn't for me. If you like using gut, but don't like the cost; then that's about the only reason I see for going to a hybrid job. (or maybe if you just want to cut down on the risk of string breakage at a bad time)

I touched Roddick's racquet at a shop and it had Babolat Poly on the mains and VS Touch on the crosses. The sticker on the racquet said that it was strung at 63lbs.

Racquet Sports Industry magazine provided a list of 19 of the top 20 players' equipment that played at the 2004 Australian Open. Roddick uses a hybrid of Babolat Hurricane 16 and Babolat VS Team 16. Coria uses Luxilon BB Original 16. Of the 19 male pros 10 use a Luxilon BB string, Original or Alu. Four use a hybrid of Luxilon BB and VS gut. Three use VS gut only. One uses Polystar string and as mentioned above Roddick uses the Babolat Hurricane/VS hybrid. The reason I have heard that many of the men use Luxilon is its durability and the fact that they don't want to risk a string breaking during a point.

On the women's side 6 out of 17 top 20 that played at the 2004 Australian Open use gut. Four use Luxilon BB Original/Alu and the remainder use Gosen or Kirschbaum string.
