Pros can play 5.0?

Just played the Michael Chang 5.0 mixed doubles vs a 5.0/wta 600 combo (my team = me4.5/girl5.0). The girl was super good (better than the guy) and after the match we learned she's ranked top 600 wta. What would the ntrp be for a wta player generally?

Super fun match but lost 4-6, 6-2, 18-20 had like 12 match points but luck wasn't in our side

Yes they can play 5.0 in certain circumstances, or at least in so called “4.5+” leagues (I suppose technically a tour player is 4.5+). However, I have never heard of a currently active tour player playing in an NTRP event. From what I’ve seen though, a 600 ranked WTA player may indeed be at the level of a 5.0 male in some circumstances. It just depends. I would be thankful for the opportunity of getting to hit with a tour level player.

wow that would be fun!
there’s not a lot of vetting going on in tourneys imo.
it’s not like usta is a central rating system that connects to wta and atp rankings.
utr on the other hand...

Yeah it was a lot of fun! It was just a shock as a 4.5 to come into a 5.0 and I was holy snap she's hella good bc my girl wasn't that level and she was the best player on the court. Had about 10 match pts but wta came rlly clutch and luck wasnt in our favor

Any player ranked in the 600s needs another career - as an example, the #600 player as of today is 24 and has made $47K in her career, <$6K ytd. Take out coaching, travel costs, stringing, etc, she has likely spent more than she's made.
Exactly.

Shared hotel rooms, long days on the road traveling, no cushy endorsments...

Lot of time waiting for that one break. That one good match.

Touring players don't even use NTRP. It was designed for us rec and league players. As it increases the differences are harder to tell. Top guys like Rafa and Fed are probably 6.832 and lower guys like Mannorino and Chung like 6.431 but I doubt they are running to look up Tennis Record or emailing Schmke for a report after every match [emoji6]

She would be a 5.5 at minimum and at 600ish WTA she should be a 6.0. One of my college guys picked up 1 ATP point a couple years ago and got bumped from 5.0 to 6.0 over night and had to default the matches he had already played in 5.0. That was at a ranking of like 1400 ATP with 1 point.

I thought michal Chang was still like 8.0 level. how did you take him and WTA player to 3rd set ?

C'mon Nosty you are better than that.

He is talking about the Michael Chang Tennis Classic tournament, not playing against Chang. You should note the "the" in the sentence.

Though Chang/Chang did win the Mixed 5.0 - I assume that was Michael and Amber. But OP played against someone else. The woman was actually from India: Parija Maloo.

But her rankings are not recent.

Career High Singles Ranking 616 (17/11/2008)
Current Doubles Ranking
Career High Doubles Ranking 538 (18/05/2009)

Also it is ITF ranking which is for juniors, not WTA

PS: I think Chang/Chang was not Michael Chang

Ok, so this is much better information. She's not currently ranked, which would be an automatic 7.0. She's in the "ranked outside the top 400 more than 5 years ago" category:

https://www.usta.com/content/dam/usta/pdfs/10013_experience_player_ntrp_guidelines.pdf

For this, given age 29, the guideline is still 6.0, but if they considered the draw a 10.0 instead of a 5.0, then her partner is 4.5, so she'd really only need to be 5.5, not 5.0, to enter with him. Based on that, I suppose it's feasible they made an exception. It's not like they dominated the tournament, they lost in the semis.

The Changs that won were Carl & Katie. Carl Chang is likely Michael's brother. It would be cool if Katie Chang was the (unrelated) actress, but I've never heard her associated with high level tennis.

Different Michael Chang, actually (and no relation). This Michael Chang is a doctor up in the LA area. Same name (obviously), right around the same age, and a very strong player... but not THE Michael Chang.

Agreed, I see no issue here. I play with a woman who was around WTA 500 three years ago and she would be a 5.0/5.5 on the Female scale today, so your comments seem about right.

A Chang Gang

I have played Roscoe Tanner, Tracy Austin, Michael Stich, even a whole bunch of Sergio Tacchinis.... no similarity other than the names

Could be a Facebook project, find players who share a famous name and play them

I won't out him, but there was a poster who used to post here all the time a couple years ago who shared a name with an NBA hall-of-fame player. He was/is a 4.0 league player.

A couple of years ago my sister's (both 4.5 level former D3 players) played in a small money tournament (open) against a girl who's around 500 in the world and has been ranked as high as 150 in doubles. The said WTA player's partner was a state HS champ who was 7 or 8 position at the U of Minnesota a few years prior. My sisters ended up losing the match 6-1, 6-3 I think. They told me after the match that the WTA player didn't miss a shot the entire first set.

The closest I have come is seeing an ad somewhere, maybe a tennis group, by a visitor from South America called Nadal who was looking for a tennis partner

What would you rank the former #1 player for a women’s team that won both the SEC and D1 national title during her tenure (now two years out of college and off the tour)??

Did she try playing ITF tournaments at all or not?
