Questions on the NextGen

Medvedev (25yo), Berrettini (24yo), Zverev (23yo), Rublev (23yo), Tsitsipas (22yo), Shapovalov (21yo), etc
+ included Thiem (27yo)

1) Are the NextGen still young in the current tennis and sporting climate, hence the inconsistency at times?
2) How many slams will the NextGen collectively (and individually if you wish) win?
3) If a NextGen player wins say 3/4/5/6+ slams, would that player be considered an ATG as previous multi-slam winners are?
4) How many weeks at #1 will the NextGen collectively (and individually) accumulate?
5) How talented and complete (gamewise, surfacewise, etc) are the NextGen compared to previous generations since 2000 excluding the Big 4?
6) How impressive are the regular Nextgen wins over the Big 3 in Bo3? Some of the NextGen have great h2h records in this format (eg Medvedev + Tsitsipas vs Djokovic, Zverev + Thiem vs Naderer).
7) How impressive are these NextGen wins over the Big 3 in slams?
- Thiem RG19 vs Djokovic
- Thiem AO20 vs Nadal
- Tsitsipas AO19 vs Federer
- Tsitsipas AO21 vs Nadal
8) How impressive are these NextGen losses against the Big 3 in slams?
- Thiem USO18 vs Nadal
- Thiem RG19 vs Nadal
- Thiem AO20 vs Djokovic
- Medvedev AO19 vs Djokovic
- Medvedev USO19 vs Nadal
- Tsitsipas RG20 vs Djokovic

What they are going to win in future does not absolve the pathetic level they have displayed, having been on tour anywhere from 5-10 years at the highest level.

Crap, that’s a lot of questions. Let’s try.

1) Are the NextGen still young in the current tennis and sporting climate, hence the inconsistency at times?

Yes, all the players you mentioned are young.

2) How many slams will the NextGen collectively (and individually if you wish) win?

Only players you mentioned: Medvedev 1-2; Berrettini 0; Zverev 2-3 (though I’m becoming less confident in this); Rublev 0; Tsitsipas 2-3; Shapovalov 0; Thiem 0-2 additional.

3) If a NextGen player wins say 3/4/5/6+ slams, would that player be considered an ATG as previous multi-slam winners are?

Only starting with 6 Slams.

4) How many weeks at #1 will the NextGen collectively (and individually) accumulate?

Medvedev 0; Berrettini 0; Zverev 40+ ; Rublev 0; Tsitsipas 40+; Shapovalov 0; Thiem 0.

5) How talented and complete (gamewise, surfacewise, etc) are the NextGen compared to previous generations since 2000 excluding the Big 4?

More talented and complete than Federer’s generation, much less talented and complete than Nadalovic generation.

6) How impressive are the regular Nextgen wins over the Big 3 in Bo3? Some of the NextGen have great h2h records in this format (eg Medvedev + Tsitsipas vs Djokovic, Zverev + Thiem vs Naderer).

I’d say on average around each third is impressive.

7) How impressive are these NextGen wins over the Big 3 in slams?
- Thiem RG19 vs Djokovic | Quite impressive
- Thiem AO20 vs Nadal | Not at all
- Tsitsipas AO19 vs Federer | A bit
- Tsitsipas AO21 vs Nadal | A bit

8) How impressive are these NextGen losses against the Big 3 in slams?

You mean how well NextGenners performed?

- Thiem USO18 vs Nadal | 10/10
- Thiem RG19 vs Nadal | 8/10
- Thiem AO20 vs Djokovic | 7/10
- Medvedev AO19 vs Djokovic | 6.5/10
- Medvedev USO19 vs Nadal | 7.5/10
- Tsitsipas RG20 vs Djokovic | 5/10

As another poster said, Thiem is not a Next Gen, come on!
And only Tsitsipas is worth to follow of that crop; of course, he should leave aside all distractions if he wants an ATG career.

Thanks for the reply. Some interesting responses regarding their levels. You are very conservative with the slams and weeks at #1. Who do you think will win the rest of the slams and likewise for weeks at #1? There are a lot of slams, weeks at #1 to go around.

Djokovic and Nadal will lock 7-8 of the next 9 Slams and by then we’ll see completely different names emerge, who will be the true beneficiaries of Big2-free Era.
