Rafa is not chasing the #1 ranking

Djoker is 640 in front of Rafa and is defending over 2,500 points for the rest of the season. Rafa is defending nothing. If Rafa plays a moderate schedule (WTF and Paris for example) and has reasonable success (semis or better) he'll be in a good place. Djoker will need to go deep (finalist as a minimum) at Paris, Shanghai and WTF to not drop major points. Rafa may not have to overplay to get his 5th YE # 1. It good that he is not making a priority out of chasing it down though.

What is the Roman numeral for 5? BullieVe!
You should pay attention only to the Race to London. In the Race, you can see how many points they need to earn to become the year-end No. 1.

Why go through all these mathematical gyrations? Just look at the Race to London points.
Rafa is ahead of Novak by 1960 points. Rafa does not have it clinched, but Novak will need to be close to perfect to take YE#1 from him.

I would think Rafa cares about one thing, slams. If you had to go into a second category such as number one at weeks or years, he will never catch the weeks so why even try.

The only thing I could see him really wanting would be the WTF. He can poo poo it all he wants, but getting just one WTF would mean a lot to him.

I think that's a reasonable take. And I do take Rafa at his word (which he says repeatedly) that he mostly wants to be feeling and playing well enough to compete for big titles. From there, I think he figures that the numbers will take care of themselves.

which (WTF title) in this particular case pretty much means that Rafa would have the #1 position at the Year End.
