Rafa: My story...(Rafa's new book)

Just seen he's announced this on his facebook page that he is releasing his autobiography in August, so obviously too early for people to write reviews yet but just thought I'd see what people thought of this?

I'm personally a big fan of tennis player autobiographies and I'd love to know a bit more about Rafa as he is already one of the all time greats. I can't help but feeling it's just a bit too early for him to release a book right now though as he's only half way through his career (let's not get into a debate about the longevity of his career, this isn't a thread about debating that subject). He has achieved so much though that his only real big goal left would be to maybe track down and surpass Roger's career slam tally, so if he ever does achieve this he won't be able to describe his emotions in this book.

I've mentioned in other threads too about how in different ways, Roger and Rafa, have taken physical conditioning in tennis to levels that noone else seems capable of reaching, Roger has barely suffered an injury in his career and you rarely see either of them tire whilst on court. I was hoping that when the day came that these two would write their autobiographies that maybe they would reveal some of their training secrets (unlike some like Murray who at times has documented every part of his training regimes). But since Rafa still has years to play he is unlikely to reveal any of his secrets in this book.

Another little niggle I have about this book is, after reading a little preview on amazon, it's just hard to get my head around the language being used (English version) because we all know Rafa himself is not capable of using the English language in this way. I know all these tennis player autobiogs are written by a ghost writer, but atleast you can 'hear' the player's voice in your head as if they are saying the words themselves (hehe I'm not going crazy) but the language being used in the outtake on amazon, I cant even imagine Rafa being able to read it. I know I'm just being a bit picky, because at the end of the day if I want to read his autobiography in English then that's just something I'll have to put up with. Otherwise I should learn Spanish myself and read the original version.

Great to hear his story from his own mouth. Until now whatever I know about Rafa is from Babbette's mouth (and sisters). :D

I'll pass.

I'd be more interested in hearing what he has to say when he retires, so we can read his thoughts on the recent Djokovic rivalry and how it affected him. I suspect this book only goes up to the end of 2010.

What the heck could Nadal possibly have to talk about now? He is only 25 years old.

I am sure the book written at this stage will be simply riveting!

I seriously wouldnt read this book even if i got 100 USD, imo he is one of the most uncharismatic boring athletes who ever walked the earth.

I prefer reading a players book once they have retired, then they can be more honest about things. He carnt really say what he thinks about other players, the atp etc while hes still got to work with these people regularly. I read Andy Murray's book a few years ago and it was the biggest load of crap ive ever seen. Jimmy Connors autobiograpghy which is out next year will be a much better read.

Plus Jimmy Connors is almost 60, not 25. Big difference.

Exactly, just like Agassi did.

What's the hurry anyways? Just because the publisher offered a deal?

What's the point of writing a bio of someone who's career is based on tennis and his tennis not even done?

Would you buy a book that you know at the end there is no end yet? What does it say? " wait for volume 2 in few years" ?

Oooooo I didn't know Connors was releasing a book! Definitely getting that! Also, I think Laver has written a book, a long time ago, I'm not checking the exact name of it right now but has anyone read it? Any good?

I didn't see any excerpt on Amazon so I'm not sure what you're referring to.

It looks like the ghostwriter is a native english speaker who is also fluent in Spanish which seems like a perfect combination, he can interview Rafa in spanish and then translate the "voice" into english.

Unlike some others, I've been looking forward to this one for a while. To me, the childhood, training and early career of any celeb is usually more interesting than the stuff that happens later, which is mostly public anyway.

I'm looking forward to Rafa's take on his relationship w/ uncle toni; suspect there will be some fun stuff for discussion there.

A short description and excerpt from the book....

Product Description
'I collapsed flat on my back on the Wimbledon grass, arms outstretched, fists clenched, roaring with triumph. The silence of Centre Court gave way to apndemonium and I succumbed to the crowd's euphoria, liberating myself from the mental prison I had inhabited from start to finish of the match, all day, the night before, the full two weeks of the greatest tennis tounament on earth.

The fear of losing, the fear of winning, the dread of ending up weeping once again on the floor of the locker room shower: all gone now. It wasn't relief I felt; it was beyond that. It was a rush of power and elation, an uncorking of emotion I had kept bottled up for the tensest four hours and forty-eight minutes of my life, an invasion of the purest joy.'

No tennis player since Andre Agassi has captivated the world like Rafael Nadal. He's a rarity in today's sporting arena - a true sportsman who chooses to let his raw talent, dedication and humility define him. Rapidly closing in on his friend and rival Roger Federer's record haul of 16 grand slam victories, Nadal is an extraordinary competitor whose ferocity on court is made even more remarkable by his grace off it. This book takes us to the heart of Nadal's childhood, his growth as a player and his incredible career. It includes many memorable highlights, from his victory in the 2008 Wimbledon final - a match that John McEnroe called, 'the greatest game of tennis ever played' - to becoming the youngest player of the open era to complete a career Grand Slam in 2010 and, most recently, equalling Bjorn Borg's record six French Open titles in 2011. It transports us from Nadal's lifelong home on the island of Majorca to the locker room of Centre Court as he describes in detail the pressures of competing in the greatest tournament in the world. It offers a glimpse behind the racquet to learn what really makes this intensely private person who has never previously talked about his home life tick. And it provides us with a story that is personal, revealing and every bit as exciting as Nadal himself.

********, not even proper translation can create prose like that. That's far too over the top for an autobiography which should be simple to read and get its points across without garnish. That looks like some Dean Koontz writing such as "She shivered and exhaled, letting her breath become white skeins of expelled fear stolen by the night.........."...althought I just made that up, it is how he writes. Just tell your story rafa, don't tell the man to become a novelist because it sounds like a fan is describing what he felt instead. I agree with this thread: it's too early, and that's far too pretentious for an autobiography ESPECIALLY by someone who can't even speak this language.

Ever heard of translators?

Yes, but it will not feel like his own words for a million years.

I would respect it more if the book said "I take 4 medical timeouts against Roger,no? And then i take 45 second between points,no? Then i look at my uncle and he say what i do,no"

That would at least be accurate and his own words.

LOL at you and the author for trying to glorify one of the dirtiest tennisplayers of all time.

I think it is way too early for him to release a book. He should wait a couple more years when his career is over to do something like this. Plus,I bet that there won't be anything really personal or new in it anyway, and will probably just be regurgitated stuff we already know about. Nadal is way too private to actually share any information about himself that people might actually be interested in. I'll be skipping this one.

A lot of people's autobiographies are done by ghost writers. Not everyone does the writing themselves. Any person releasing an autobiography would read their own before giving permission for its release.

You make more money obviously if you release 2 autobiographies. And Nadal's career as been so eventful it is a good idea to produce 2 volumes anyway. This is the first volume. Nadal is smart, obviously on the court, but off it too.

Ruan,is that you?

And how is Rafa "one of the dirtiest tennis players of all time"? If you are implying what I think you are implying,do you have any proof of this? The answer to that would be a resounding NO.

This is my opinion about him, based on 5-6 years of looking, reading and hearing about the kid.

If you dont like it, tough luck.

Is this book about how to nod off in 5 minutes? Ways to fix insomnia? It might actually work if that was the case.

What are you guys talking about?:???:

Rafa wrote his FB:

Hi everyone, after a year working with the well-known writer John Carlin, I want you to be the first to know that the book is due in August and and I want to share with you the title page. What do you think about it? Also, very soon I'll release the first chapter only for you ;). Rafa

The book is written by not Rafa but John Carlin.

I love Rafa but he is 25, what's his autobiography? some growing up stuff til hes 15 and then his tennis career, which I've been watching...can't imagine it will be at all interesting.

Guys..... you're failing to see what he is doing. He is going to release an entire VOLUME of autobiographies.

But it seems a bit pretentious to me to release an auto biography at such a young age. It's almost as though he is saying I have done this, NOW READ IT.

Like which?

Coaching (when Uncle Toni yelled Vamos during last year's Wimbledon, and after the US Open when the media manipulated his quotes regarding pre-match strategy), Doping (even after he wins 3 slams in 2010, after losing most of his muscle definition), Fake injuries (asserted by ESPN, despite absolutely nothing adding up - he gets setpoint and then fakes an injury?), Time wasting (even though Del Potro took the same average time - 26 secs - between points and never got a warning).

And the list goes on....I'm sure there will be some new ones next year.

Mind if I address each of these separately?

By the by, I can't be racist since I'm also white hispanic, so I can pretty much give good reasons for each complaint against Nadal without you complaining that I am going against him for racial reasons
