Returning player with knee pain

Hi all new to the forums but long time lurker.

I started playing tennis again after about 5 years of inactivity. In the past I was an avid mountain biker, ran track in school for 8 years , was a skateboarder for 20+ years so needless to say I think my joints have taken some beatings in the past.

I have gotten addicted to tennis again and every time I play my knees just below the knee cap have been giving me allot of pain. I tried to play through it and at this point it's just not an option.

I got some patella strap's and it seems to help a bit but not sure really what to do at this point.

Some feedback

Not sure this will help, but maybe...I returned to the game after a long absence and had knee discomfort soon after...some pain in the same area and some swelling.....saw the orthopedist after the swelling after play became noticeable.

Turned out to be arthritis...some anti-inflammatories and a knee-brace for support and I've been pretty much fine since, except for the occasional slight soreness....nothing severe at all...

Good luck to you

How about getting it checked out medically? Pain that is too severe to play through in someone who is "addicted to tennis" as you say, is definitely abnormal. You don't want to make any structural damage worse by continuing to play on it. Rest and ice are the first line of treatment while you are waiting for your appointment.

Yeah, old trauma to the knees (and other joints) have a habit of coming back to haunt us as we get older. As CF says, get thee to a physician. There are a lot of possibilities here.

Agree with checking with a physician first. I found my cure for Patello-Femoral Syndrome to be yoga. I am the kind of guy that used to tease the yoga crowd, but after my physio isolated the cause and gave me temporary relief (days to weeks) he suggested yoga. He said his patients that swim regularly and do yoga twice a week are no longer patients. Sounded fishy to me but WTH, I try it to get away from knee pain. The first several yoga classes were eye openning at my lack of flexibility at age 45. Quite active all the years but it catches up to you. It seems the more yoga I do now the less my knee hurts and my tennis is improving. Don't know why about the tennis improvement other than balance and muscle strength. So now I am a redneck yoga dude. I know it sounds weird but it works. Stick to it, twice a week.
