Roddick ---the savior of serve amd volley

Wow!!! Roddick amd stefanki have really improved his volleys and slice backhand!

Not only did he beat Nadal serving amd volleying , but he is the best player of 2010.

If he continues this way Im chainging my name to Roddick Road!!

Go Andy !! Wow!!!

uhhh roddick sucks? such a boring final he has no aggressive plays. as as example, his first match point, 34 strokes, waiting for berdych to make a mistake, and he made nothing happen. im glad he won it though, better than berdych holding up that trophy.

roddick does not suck, he is a former worlds number 1, won the us open, reached the finals again in 2006, reached the 2003 wimby semi's, 2004, 2005, 2009, finals, 4 australian open semifinals 2 which were against federer, several masters shields lost to federer, and masters cups lost to federer, but wait who hasnt lost to federer other than nadal, like that in federer's prime 2004- 2007

he reached the indian wells masters final, won miami, brisbane,

No way.

You wouldn't know what to do with a slice backhand or a chip of it hit you in the face.

He was hitting those slices and change ups. A thing of beauty. Wish Murray did more of it .

But the net rushing was incredible. Slice and chaaaaaarge!!

Roddick can bring back serve and volley.

But hi serve and volleying was aweweeeesome.!

CBS did. It's actually a fact...he has won more than anyone else.

I would call Federer the best player of 2010 so far. Masters tank jobs and light schedule so far in 2010 aside a slam beats all else. Roddick maybe 2nd best player of the year so far.

LOL just maybe? By far and away the 2nd best player, and could be argued to be on par with Federer.

Ummmm, Mother Marjorie thinks we're approaching clay court season and Andrea Roddick's results will be in serious decline....fast forward to Wimbledon boys. Just sayin'

I think so:

Federer results:

SF at Doha
W at AO
early round exits in IW and Miami(though he did comeback after illness)

Roddick results:

W in Brisbane
QF in AO
F in SAP Open
QF in Memphis
F in IW
W in Miami.

Seems to be more consistent that Fed to me though Fed would have probably made it further in the draw had he not come back after illness.

IMO right now it should be like this for HC this year:

1-2 Fed-Roddick
3-Nadal(F-QF-SF-SF)
4-Soderling(W in rotterdam, two consecutive SF in IW and Miami)

Mother Marjorie is curious about you Canadian tennis players. Is it difficult transitioning from indoor play during the winter time to hardcourt during the spring?

Andy's been down a long road and I'm genuinely excited that he has evolved beyond a one trick pony, but it kills me that he's only just recently gotten good at transitioning to net and volleying well. If he had learned a more complete skill set growing up, he could have had more weapons and tactics to call upon earlier in his career.

There are other solid net players who have kept serve & volleying and all court tennis relevant over the years (including Roger and Justine), but Andy's timeline makes a great case for learning the whole game early on, not just the "surf and turf" approach to the sport that calls for not much more than a big serve and big forehand.

Pro tennis in the U.S. and elsewhere is only now getting over that malady of one dimensional baseline power that plagued things for a while - hopefully the WTA in general will be on the mend... one of these years.

With S&V as a solid option in Andy's arsenal, I think it's going to be reeeeally interesting to see just how much damage he can finally do in the next couple of years!

nope not at all...our outdoor season is from april to october...

He played the game he needed to win today, not the game he didn't need.

When he played Nadal, he played more aggresive, because he needed to. He didn't need to today, so he didn't. And guess what? He still won

So much hatred around here. What did Roddick do? Kill your guys' puppies?

Given Andrea Roddick's big serve and poor backhand groundstrokes, I'm surprised no one has ever advised him to serve and volley more often. His results would definitely improve at the majors.

we have 12 indoor courts. ******
Perhaps that is why the University of Minnesota-Canada isn't exactly a powerhouse in the sport of Division I tennis. In fact, until you mentioned you played for them, I didn't even know they fielded a team, and I've followed tennis for years.

Enjoy your underachievement playing in your insulated igloos up north!!!

roddick is naturally a defensive player once the ball is in play, due to his late growth spurt, he was always smaller than the other guys on tour earlier on, similar to hewitt's counter punching/never say die style as he was always playing older/mature players from a younger age....

Serve and volley is what Stepanek and Dent do.
At times, even Tsonga.

Stop getting exciting if Roddick comes at the net at some point, he's still a baseliner, a defensive one, as well.

that's his problem. he needs to be aggressive at the baseline. i mean his first serve is amazing and aggressive, he's gotta keep the aggressiveness pace or else how hard he serves the ball, it wouldn't matter if he's not going to take his chances and take the point.

I don't understand all this talk of Roddick being the savior of serve and volley. I mean, he likes to come in off a great slice, but he never really serves and follow. At least not more than a bunch of other players. Federer pretty much serves & volley more than Roddick, and he doesn't do it very often.

Good Job Commando! I agree with you 100%. I have been guilty of bashing Roddick myself, so I am not getting on my soapbox. Now people aren't satisfied that he WON, they criticize the WAY he won. Let's just settle down and put this into perspective. Roddick won a Master's Series Tournament and beat an in form Nadal in the semis. Last week he lost a final to an inspired Ljubicic at Indian Wells, who was serving out of his head. Roddick does not have the smoothest or most beautiful flowing game in the world. You can always find issues with his strokes or movement and its easy to criticize his strategy, but he is winning. Lets give him a break.

Yeah man. There are some people here just full of hate. No matter what Roddick does will never be good enough, they'll always make excuses. Hell, he can go undefeated the rest of the year, and everyone will just be saying that everyone else had a bad year.. Whatevers!!

Whatever hate many of you have, and whatever excuse or comment to try and belittle what his accomplishment was... I only got one thing to say SONY-ERICCSON CHAMP! And I'm sure he's all smiles when he receives that check.

if you do watch tennis, you should at least know espn commentators are full of ****

what about the NY Times?

On Friday, he used an aggressive serve-and-volley game to defeat Rafael Nadal in the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open. On Saturday, he played in an amusing two-set charity event here to support earthquake relief in Chile.

And on Sunday, he reverted to a different style, playing more from the baseline and slicing and top-spinning his way to a steady 7-5, 6-4 victory over Tomas Berdych to win his first title here since 2004, and his first ATP Masters 1000 series tournament since Cincinnati in 2006.

With his increased variety of weapons, which have been developed under the tutelage of his coach, Larry Stefanki, Roddick has become the hottest player on the tour. Sunday’s triumph was his second tournament title of the year and extended his match record to a tour-best 26-4.

we know roddick can play aggresivley...we saw that vs Nadal. he wanted to get the title, he played without taking huge risks, and it payed off. he said it himself, that style of play wont work against the likes of Federer and Nadal, because they'll stand in the duece/add court and just rip their forehands and move roddic around.

So Roddick decided to blast his forehand and go out of his comfort zone for 4-5 years in the pros, then revert back to it randomly, not a coach's decision?

Exactly why he used serve and volley to defeat Nadal. Federer might be able to learn something there!

I would agree with him being clearly the 2nd best, but not on par with Federer. Ask Roddick if he would trade results with Federer so-far this year. To ask that question is to answer it. That alone will tell you who is having the better year.

He had an injury excuse all ready before he dumped the San Jose & Memphis finals away. (It's not Memphis quarterfinal). He couldn't give a damn in Indian Wells, when a trophy's in his face. Of course, after tanking the Australian Open shamelessly, anything he does now on the court looks surprising. Year after year. It's no news that Fed fan boys are arrogantly scoffing.
