I don't know if it was better, but he had confidence in that stroke back then. He was simply hitting a lot harder. It was when he allowed himself to be bullied around more, that people started to exploit his backhand and he lost some confidence in it. I would say his backhand is now technically better though. My 2 cents.
his backhand is better now, before he was able to hit his backhand winners sometimes too but only because he was able to hit it harder, now he can slice much better, lob and be more accurate with it than before i think.

now andy roddick backhand is very good, he slice it so low and with larry he breave enough to hit backhand DTL for winners, and hitting a DTL backhand is very important to distract the opponent rhythm instead of going cross court backhand all the time...
Back then he hit it harder on average, but now he has a lot mroe variety and when on the occasions when he does rip it, it's a bit faster than it used to be. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_u7D3iQxlUo
Go to 0:37 and 0:40
the only thing in Roddick's backhand that has improve is his dtl backhand only if u give him the time to hit it.
his slice can and has been delt with by the likes of Federer and Murray this year
